DD really likes the videos (as long as they have the right teacher - she hated the 8th grade ELA one, for example, but loves the 9th grade English teacher), so I guess I'll say they really depend on the teacher. The algebra teacher, for instance, is excellent. Assignments are mostly quiz-type assignments after viewing the video, with tests after each unit. There are extra assignments for certain classes that are done offline, but I haven't had DD do any of those. At the middle and high school levels, most units have between 15 and 20 lessons, depending on the subject.

I felt like I needed to add the part about it not being for everyone, since some kids learn very poorly with videos, and parents expect a lot of written work. If that's the case, Acellus will not fit your family. For mine, because DD learns SO much better with videos, and we're still working our way up the writing ladder (it's her weakest skill, so next year will involve lots of it) - she can handle FAR more input than output, since she's not even really on "grade level" output-wise - it works for us. For the price, it is totally worth it here.

Thank you so much for this review!

I really like Acellus for accountability. Everything is online, so it doesn't work for writing, but for $10 a month, you can have the student watch the videos and do the online work in up to 6 subjects, and the parent can log in and check the student's progress (daily, if necessary), to see if all the goals for the day have been met. It's certainly not for everyone, though.

Aurelia.....can you tell me a little more about your experience with Acellus? Are the videos interesting? What do assignments look like each day? On average, how many lessons to a unit? I have watched samples and looked over what's included, but would love to hear more from someone actually using it. And why the bolded part? Is there something specific that stands out that makes you say this? Thanks so much!

  3. Personally, I would wait until the summer is over. When you submit your letter of intent, that will become the date when your evaluations are due every year. So if you homeschool on the same schedule that public school does, start in August and end in May/June, then your evaluations would be due in the middle of your year every year. As for mailing in your intent, that is fine. However, I would recommend getting signature confirmation so you have proof it was received. I actually take our yearly evaluations into the county every year. I have 2 copies, 1 for their records and 1 for mine. I have them stamp and sign both. This way I have record that they were turned in just in case they misplace something. They actually misplaced my daughter's 5th grade-10th grade years. Thankfully, I had all my paperwork so I never ran into any issues.

  4. Sorry, no advice here. I suffer from sinus infections as well, usually twice a year. The only thing that ever seems to get rid of them is a round of antibiotics. In fact, I'm taking one now to get rid of the sinus infection I've been battling for a few weeks now. I'll be following your post to see if you get any helpful information. I'd love another option than antibiotics.

  5. I can't get to a specific page that links all of them. I just googled "glencoe grammar and language workbook grade 6 pdf" and came up with this. grade 6 I believe. Part 1, whatever that means.

Here's grade 8.  another link in case that one stops working

    grade 9 (also a part 1)

    grade 10

    grade 12

Sorry, ran out of time and couldn't find grade 11. I need to get ready for work. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

  6. Thank you Kim! I was originally looking at WriteShop on Rainbow Resource and they did not have this information. I came to the boards before I went to your site. (which is not usually like me to ask a question before fully researching, but I was REALLY tired that day. :blushing: )  I was able to get to your site today and find what I was looking for and then never made it back here to update my post. I also just joined your group on Facebook. Thanks for the add and thank you again for your reply here!

  7. I am looking into WriteShop for next year. I see that there is now a new edition for WriteShop 1 & 2. Has anyone used both and if so,which edition would you choose and why?

Any other thoughts or helpful tidbits would be appreciated as well.  :001_smile:

  8. I felt my kids' retention would be better if they had exposure to the same concept over more days.

This. This is why I would rather take more time going through the book rather than doing two pages each day. I don't know why I never trust my gut and need reassurance from others, but thank you. 😊 we will take our time.

  9. Thanks mamakelly, but I already own EGP and have looked through it. (I have the older version) I do think he can do it. Honestly it only covers a couple of things in each section that the sixth grade book does not. If we find those topics too difficult, we will skip those pages.

  10. Did you finish this book in a year or take longer?

In order to finish it in a year, it looks like we would have to double up on lessons or skip some. I don't really want to double up on lessons. DS can only take so much grammar in one sitting. I am ok with skipping if I see that he has the concept mastered, but I'm just not sure that will happen enough times to finish the book next year. (We only do our curriculum 4 days a week, the 5th day he will attend a club with enrichment activities)  So I guess I'm wanting to hear from anyone who took longer than a year. lol

ETA: DS will only be in 6th next year. I have looked through the concepts and think he will do fine with the level. Just thought I'd mention it though since we would be starting the book a year before it is "recommended".

  11. I don't usually find anything at our local sales, at least not in the last few years. I have bought from here on the board, Homeschool Classifieds, ebay, and a couple of facebook groups.

As far as selling goes, I mostly wait and sell at our local book sale at the end of each year. However, I don't have a lot to sell lately as much of my stuff I have loaned out for others to use when we are done with it. It seems when one person is done, someone else needs it. I guess you could say I have my own lending library. I know how awesome it is when I can borrow something instead of having to buy it.  :001_smile:
