  1. We would like to participate. I have a 10 year old son.
  2. Thanks Regentrude! I have been giving my son small quizzes using problems that have confused him. There are some concepts (like the distribution property) that we see over and over again that he struggles with.
  3. My son loves the Redwall series. It is fantasy, kind of like Tolkein. The author has also begun a new series about pirates called The Flying Dutchman. We haven't read those yet, but they are waiting on the coffee table.
  4. I have a set time per day, but not a set time per subject. We school from 9:00 to 2:00. I set goals for what we will accomplish for the week. If we don't get everything done by Friday, we finish it on Saturday morning.
  5. We have the PDF but I print the student pages for my son. I also prefer a paper copy. Depending on where you are going overseas, you might be able to print it when you get there.
  6. I think that my son would like to do that. He loves getting mail! He is 10. I don't know what ages participated last year.
  7. I am doing MFW CTG with my 5th grader this year. Thanks for the question and the explanation ladies. I am getting really excited about starting this new school year. Donna, your explanation reminded me of why we chose MFW. I think that I will learn as much as my son.
  8. My family is currently home schooling in South Korea. We are doing MFW Exploring Countries and Continents. I think that my son has read some books 5, 6, or 7 times now. I understand that packing and shipping can be an issue. So maybe it will be an encouragement that your kids can read the same books over and over. We also have a kindle. It is amazing. My husband is great at finding free books. Many classics are free. I bought The Sugar Creek Gang for my son. It is a Christian book series about boys that solve mysteries. It is $10 for 6 books. He reads them over and over. My son is an avid reader, so it is hard to estimate how many books he has read this year. I am just happy that he is okay reading the same books.
  9. Our favorite game site is www.boardgamegeek.com. It has ratings and overviews for tons of games. Our family favorites (these are recommended for ages 12+, but bright kids can play with no problems): Dominion Ticket to Ride Acquire Vegas Showdown Power Grid Small World Mega Monopoly Power Yahtzee Rummikub I plan on checking out some of the games listed. We are always on the lookout for a new game.
  10. So I will give you a rough idea of my Lego club plan, then you give me great ideas to add to it. ;) Meet once a month. Have challenges for each meeting - vehicle, animal, something that moves, etc... Students will write about their creation and present their creation to the moms. I think that I will limit it to 4 -5 students. What do you think?
  11. Thank you for all the replies. Looks like we're getting the DVDs.
  12. I took three years of Latin in High School, but I don't know how much I retained. Thanks for your reply. It is probably better to understand using the DVDs than to get frustrated by ourselves.
  13. Do you have the DVD? Do you use it? Can I easily use the program without the DVD? We would be using primer A. I am trying to use my home school budget wisely, so any help would be appreciated.
  14. Ha Ha Ha!!! I also have a literal child. I am so thankful that he is 10 now. He can understand the intent of words versus the literal meaning.
  15. Wow! Now I am excited for next year. I ordered AoPS for my DS10. It is completely different than what we are doing now, but I know that he needs to be challenged. I am ready to work through this together and watch him grow as a student.:D
