  1. Hi there! Here is the link to an example of the syllabus: http://www.derekowens.com/CourseSyllabuses2.php?Location=Online&Day=Monday&Year=2014-2015&Course=Physical%20Science&Teacher=Mr.%20Owens Basically, my DD just breaks down the week accordingly. For example, week one has 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, she does all the videos (1.1a, 1.1b, etc.) on day 1, and then completes homework 1A. Then she will do 1.2 starting the following day. If the videos are longer on one day then she will complete the homework the next day. She usually spends one hour a day, five days a week. We also do his Pre-Algebra and she loves both classes. Hope this helps!
  2. My DD is really enjoying Derek Owens Pre-Algebra this year. It is a video based program with full explanations. :thumbup1:
  3. Hello there! Have you looked at either of these for Math? Derek Owens/Lucid Education Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1: http://www.lucideducation.com/?p=Prealgebra.php Tablet Class Pre-Algebra or Algebra: www.tabletclass.com My DD is in 7th and loves Derek Owens. I am not sure if you are needing Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, but we are doing Pre-Algebra this year and my DD loves it. She does it completely on her own (other than me checking her homework/tests), and can watch the videos as much as needed. Additionally, he teaches how to take notes throughout his courses. The same for his Physical Science course. Hope this helps! :)
  4. I am planning ahead! :) I will need some type of accredited program and would like to start possibly next year so that the HS transition is smooth. Does anyone have experience with this program? Any input appreciated - thanks!
  5. Anyone have experience with this program? Any input appreciated - thanks!
  6. My DD - just turned 11 and is going into 6th. She is a VSL and LOVES to draw. She is obsessed with shapes, patterns and puzzles. We are deciding on what math for next year and she is begging to do geometry. When I found this I thought maybe it is an option? However, she has never done RS before. I know they say on their site that level G is done differently and that they do not need prior RS experience. Her previous math has included Abeka K-3 (private school), TT5 in 4th (she didn't like it), and this year we are finishing MM5 (likes it, but somewhat bored) and working our way through all of the Key To Series (loves) workbooks. Can anyone give any input that has done this program? Or, would it be best to stick with MM6? Thanks!
  7. Just in case you missed it :) Here you go! http://resource2.veritaspress.com/Promotions/Self-Paced.html
  8. I showed the online sample to my DD and she just loved it. We are looking for options for next year. Can anyone tell me how long the lessons are daily? I was wondering if it was possible for an older child (she will be in 6th) to complete more than one class a year? Thanks!
  9. We might not be able to do Calvert next year so I am planning ahead. CBD has this listed as an all inclusive Grammar, Vocabulary, Spelling and Writing program. We would not be using the writing because we use IEW, but I wondered about the rest? Thanks in advance!
  10. www.mastermath.info I was just curious if anyone has feedback on this. My DD likes to try harder problems for fun and I came across this. If you click on "lessons" it gives you a full overview of 6-8th Math. Thanks!
  11. Some of the older reviews are not that great. Any thoughts from users this year? Thanks!
  12. This has been perfect for us this year! Short lessons, but she remembers everything. I have been learning right along with her. http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Started-Spanish-Homeschoolers-Self-Taught/dp/0979505135/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349300987&sr=8-1&keywords=getting+started+with+spanish
  13. I never even thought about setting up a website! That is an excellent idea. Thank you so much. A big thanks to everyone! I think I have an idea of what to adjust. Quark - as for the Science, I went with this: http://education.cambridge.org/subject/science/cambridge-checkpoint-science/cambridge-checkpoint-science-coursebook-7 (you can see the inside sample from that page) She needs things very colorful and I thought it might work. She seems to be bored though. I looked at CPO and was scared off by how hard it was possibly going to be to do the experiments. So, I gave her this: http://www.learn-and-do.com/microscope_adventure.htm Now she does more experiments because, of course, she likes it better! :001_smile: I seriously considered Science Fusion, but not sure on that either. Any good options for Science? Or, keep moving ahead with experiments? Thanks!
  14. Ok! I think I have a pretty good idea on what I should do. A big thank you to all of you. Great ideas and advice. I guess I just needed to hear it's okay to cut things back, and that she doesn't have to do ALL the problems! I figured it was more my issue! Ha! I'll let you know how it goes! :001_smile:
  15. We actually stopped LOF because she said it was too much. BUT, that's actually the one she likes. I am just too chicken in thinking that LOF doesn't cover enough and doesn't seem complete. I have looked at MEP. I actually have Singapore 5a/5b on the shelf (us edition) but figured I would start with CLE only because she seems to struggle remembering her facts sometimes. Only sometimes though! The rest of the time she is doing story problems in her head with no work! So confusing. She says she knows them, but just forgets sometimes??? We play "war" with numbered cards 2-13. She knows them inside out. See what I mean? Confusing. I put a problem on the board, and she always says "make it harder!" Oh dear.
  16. So, I feel like I have made a mess out of my DD (10-fifth) curriculum this year. I have been working all week trying to figure out what direction to go. I have just decided I am going to ask all of you because being only my second year I am really afraid of making more mistakes. In a nutshell, she is just kind of unhappy with some of it. Bored maybe? Or, maybe she just doesn't like too much homework and I should stick to my guns more? Ugh! Here's an overview: My DD is actively trying to work with me to figure out works best. Over the summer through the help of some nice ladies here I have discovered that she is possibly gifted and very VSL. She is CRAZY creative and I have to keep her on task because she has so many projects going. She excels in ballet, theatre and gymnastics. She is horrible at spelling when she writes stories, but gets a perfect on her spelling tests. Loves math, science and technology. So far this year: Tried MCT (Town): She thinks it's "babyish" - wanted to drop it right away. CLE math 5 - likes it - but wishes she had some "hard stuff" she says? However, she complains of too many problems to do for homework?? R&S English 5 - Likes the lesson - says too much homework to do because she knows it already. So far, great retention. A's on tests. Boring for her. IEW Intensive - LOVES IT - wants to keep - finds him hysterical LOF Fractions - loved it but she says it's too much to do with CLE. Science - She can't get enough. She likes it, but I think it might be too easy. She does her own experiments with her microscope along with CP Science. History- likes it now that I have added our own "scrapbook" type art activity to go along with it. We make it out of all the key points she learns in Story of the USA. NaNoRiMo - FAVORITE LOVES IT. Typing, piano, GSWS, GSWL, States & Capitals we are all good with. Here are the other things: Added Mark Kistler Drawing videos online. She has done 4-5 a day. Loves it so much. Also added BrainPop App, Brainquest App, Stack the States APP as a "fun" option, and of course she likes them. Her other complaints: She wishes it was all in one spot and that she could do it all alone. She is very independent. For example, I showed her Laurel Springs, because she thought she wanted something online, and she loved it. Kinda pricey, and I am not sure if it will actually fit her needs because of all the artsy? I've also considered Oak Meadow? I see her light up when she draws, does NaNoRiMo, etc. Can it all be like that? Or, am I dreaming? I am afraid to cut anything like R&S and CLE because of how good everyone says they are? Any advice?

  18. I was considering them also, but last week I talked to a rep from here: http://www.aoacademy.com/ ...and they explained that Liberty and Keystone both use their program "Ignitia".. So, I would call to confirm. :)
  19. My DD (9 - last year) despised Rosetta Stone! BUT - this year I switched her to the below link and she loves it! There is also a Latin program by the same author. We started 4 weeks ago and her retention has been outstanding! We do 1 lesson a day. Short lessons, easy to review, and not overwhelming. I am even learning! :tongue_smilie: You can see inside the book on Amazon. Hope this helps. http://www.gettingstartedwithspanish.com/
