  1. How different is it from the original PLL by Serl? What poems are replaced and what are they replaced with? What lesson are different and how are they different? Are most of the pictures color? I really like that it has color pictures and that it is spiral bound. I'm trying to see if it would work with MFW's lesson plans.
  2. I uses Apples and Pears spelling. It is great for struggling spellers. It also uses dictation. The sentences that are dictated are all made up of words that they have been learning to spell. I can't explain how happy I am with the program.
  3. So it never teaches the other concepts?
  4. does more than subtraction in Beta! I feel like we are missing out on so much. No time, no money, no measuring, no geometry.:glare: I am using Alpha. I love the blocks and the lessons, but there is more to math than adding! Please tell me Beta steps up and does more than addition and subtraction because if it doesn't, I'm going back to CLE.
  5. A program that is supposed to help improve reading via vision exercises done on the computer. I think.:001_huh:
  6. I voted no. If it was a 100k, by the time I paid for 4 dc's private school tuition, I would be back down to very little income- if any. And I would not send them to public school for the money. If I was making 500k maybe. Then I could pay for private school and all kinds of extras while still having a good income. So, it just depends on the number in front of the five zeros. Dh would not HS the kids. He is not the stay at home dad kind of person.
  7. My dd, who is 8, and my ds, who is 6, both have very sloppy handwriting. Dd's is sloppy because she is dyslexic and ds's is sloppy because he doesn't like to write.:glare: Both copy about a paragraph a day. I was thinking about shorting down the copywork to one sentence and making sure it is very neat and slowly adding more. Would this be better? Or is copying a paragraph more beneficial?
  8. My dd is attending a residential high school and we both love it! It is only for juniors and seniors. But, I don't think I would let a dc any younger that 16 attend that type of school. It is the best place for my dd because it is the only place around us that can provide they type of learning for voice she needed.
  9. I thought the email was odd since it stated 18 or once a student graduated. If a dc graduates at 16 the age of 18 shouldn't matter. Right? Why would you want to fight for the right for a dc to quit school?
  10. Those of you that use MM could you help me understand it a little better? How many lesson are the a year? How many pages does a dc do in day? Is there continual review? I really don't want to do a entire book on one subject and then drop it. That will get me in trouble with my dd. She needs constant review of material learned. What are the Spectrum books like? I know nothing about them. I like the idea of test prep. I have to test my dc next and I am worried about all the little things they are required to know.
  11. I think my question may be confusing. I don't need a supplement that practices math facts. I think MUS does a fantastic job with math facts, I need a supplement to teach everything else but math facts-like <,>, time, simple geometry, measurement and money.
  12. I need a supplement for MUS. I don't want to change curriculums since MUS has been the first, of many curriculums I have tried (CLE, RS, SM), that has explained concepts to where my dd has conceptual understanding. Unfortunantly, I don't like that MUS isn't spiral. I think my dc are missing out on learning concepts such as <,>, measurement, time, money and simple geometry. I know that eventually MUS gets to these concepts, but I liked how CLE incorporated them all. If CLE taught basic operations like MUS, I think I would have the prefect curriculum! I started a post to ask if MEP would be a good supplement and received a few responses (thanks!), but I was wondering if there was something out there that would be a better supplement to MUS. I was also thing about CLE, but I am afraid of putting too much work on my dc. What do you suggest?
  13. Anyone use MEP as a supplement to MUS? How to you use the programs together? Do you do the lessons in MEP or do you just have your dc do the worksheet and you explain any new concepts? I was thinking of having my dc use the blocks to do the lessons where applicable. I really like the way MUS teaches concepts. It is the first program that has made my dd understand math, so I don't want to change methods, I just want a supplement.
  14. Being gifted doesn't always translate into the three R's. My oldest dd is dyslexic, but aural and not visual. She is in a very prestigious boarding high school for the arts. She is on route to be an opera singer. Her musical talent is almost scary, but she really struggles in regular school subjects. In elementary school, they tested her for all sorts of problems, but she was able to compensate for her dyslexia and never received any help. So I guess she would be categorized as 2e or a stealth dyslexic. She has to work 4x's as hard as the other students in the 3R's to make passing (C's) grades. Does your dc show any type of special artistic or musical ability. There are all sorts of areas one can be gifted in.
  15. Is there a preschool/daycare program near you that hires teachers with a degree in Early Childhood Ed? Honestly, most of the preschools I have worked at or observed hired the lowest denominator of person because they don't pay their employees what a real teacher would make. Is there anyway you can attend a play group where you supervise his socialization? It sounds like it would be too much for a regular daycare teacher to have him in their class if he is out of controll.
  16. I must have missed the "pound" dosage as an adult. I was 105 lbs for a long time and took 2 pills all the time. If it was my dc, I would give them 1 pill. Although, I consider 105 an adult weight.
  17. I am using it with my 1st grade ds who doesn't have any reading problems and my 2nd grade dd, who is dyslexic. They are both in level 1 and we are doing one page a day (not lesson) to make it last the entire year. I started it with my 2nd grader this year. I wouldn't use it with a 1st grader unless they were average or above readers. Don't let the program fool you into thinking it is very easy. The first unit is easy, but it picks up later. The first unit makes sure they know all the letter sounds, but it only takes a few days. We are half way through level one and are to the point where I dictate 4 sentences for the dc to write. I can't say enough about the program! I think it is the best spelling program available for dc who arn't natural spellers and a great phonics review for those who are.
  18. Haven't read the other posts, but I have a friend who recently move to France. She is very petite (maybe 5' tall) and very thin (guessing her weight is between 95 and 100lbs). She said she was STARVING.ALL.THE.TIME because the portions sizes served were soooooo small. If the portions sizes make a very small, thin woman feel hungry, you know they arn't eating very much. It may be very rich and fatty food, but very, very small servings!
  19. I don't think parents will focus on ID vs. Evolution. I think parents are going to try their best to get rid of Everyday Math or any type of Chicago style math and try to get phonic instruction taught. As a Christian, I could care less if they teach evolution. It is not something that is taught daily like math and reading and knowing how other people believe is not a bad thing. It is very easy to have students who's parents do not want them taught evolution, to leave the room and do busy work for a couple of days. I use to have to do this with students who weren't allowed to participate in Holliday activities. And what is wrong with teaching both. I want my dc to know both because understand what people believe is important. I think this is an excellent start to allow parents to have more controll over their dc's education. I don't understand why parents and teachers can't come together and choose the curriculum taught at the schools. It would be very easy to have a vote yearly on what curriculum to use. That way if test scores plummet, you could get rid of what caused the problem (like whole language and EM). What makes me sick, it the article someone posted here about a school who went against what they were allowed to teach and used Saxon Math. The test scores soared, but the school still got in trouble and the parents had no way to make the school keep using Saxon. This is what I think the Tea Party people are trying to fight for: parental say. We as parents aren't stupid and KNOW what they are teaching in most schools is crap.
  20. The main reason I quit doing CLE was the amount of daily work. I was doing everything according to the TM. Do you modify the work? I was thinking about not doing the speed drills and flash cards (dd kept finger counting to answer the flash cards and wasn't able to memorize). Do you modify CLE? If so, how?
  21. I am so pleased with how well A&P spelling is working that I was wondering if there was a math equivalent. Something that reviews things over and over in small steps. Conceptual math is bust. My dd can't understand the tricks like- to do 8+3 first make 8 a 10 by removing 2 from 3 then add then add the 1 back to the 10 to equal 11. Honestly, I think this it is rediculious to go through so many step. How is this easier? Also, no matter what math curriculum I try, dd still insists counting on her fingers. So far I have tried RS, CLE, SP and MUS in that order. We are speeding through MUS Aplha and have 9 units left which will take us about 5 weeks to complete. MUS has helped her to understand how to find how x, which is a huge break through. I also think MUS is too easy and I don't like that it only teaches one thing at a time. I feel like we should be working with money, time and simple geomentry along with addition and subtraction like CLE. I really liked CLE better after using MUS. But before I jump back to CLE, I was wondering I f there was a program like A&P?
  22. We are talking about a life or death situation. I don't think schools should have to be responsible for that type of care in a regular classroom. Being a former PS teacher, I would NOT want to be responsible for a student that could die so quickly from an allergy. After reading the post on how easy it is to cross contaminate via crumbs, peanut on shoes from a restaurant, ect.... I would ask the child to be move to another classroom or I might even quit! Teachers want to teach, not be a nurse. When I decided at 18 to be a teacher, I had no idea how many responsibilities would be brought down on me. Asking a classroom to be peanut free is impossible. You can't monitor/make 25+ families comply to a rule as stringent as peanut free. Student who are that easily at risk of death should be at a special school/class with a full time nurse who stays in the room. Maybe it would be a good idea to hire a teacher who has a degree in nursing and education. I know all student are required by law to have a free public education, but that does not mean they have to right to impose so much on public schools. Their needs to be a safe, alternative free public education not in a regular school building for special need students. I am sorry if parents don't think this is fair and want their dc to have a "normal" school experience, but life or death situations can't fall in the "fair" category. If you want your dc to stay alive, trying to creat a "normal" experience is not reasonable.
  23. Honestly, I don't want to be a chauffeur. If your dc is very active in activities, having a licenses at 16 is a lifesaver for mom. I just couldn't let my older dd do all she would (and I would have) liked for her to do because it was too much to get all my littles in the care at night after her rehearsals.
