  1. Jackie- I learned magic loop by watching a tutorial on you tube. The key for me is a comfortably long and very flexible circular. I like those from knitpicks or addi turbos. This link may be the one I used, there are several to choose from on You tube...
  2. Congratulations on your new additions! I did not read every reply to your OP, but three of my four babies were late term preemies (36, 35, 34 weeks). My BF experience with each was different, but ultimately successful. I'd definitely recommend pumping as much as possible to keep your milk supply up and store any excess for use later. One of mine was very sleepy and we would stimulate her feet and undress her and stimulate her with a cool wash cloth to get her roused enough to feed well. If she dozed back off we'd wake and repeat. We aimed for every 2 to 2 1/2 hrs from start of feeding to start of the next one and only let her have one longer stretch at night (more like 3-4 hrs). Definitely consult a lactation consultant for help as well, especially if they are feeding better from bottle than breast. With one of mine I used a n*pple shield to make it easier her for to latch one for several weeks. With another we used pumped breast milk in a supplemental nursing system to keep a slower, but steady supply. There are lots of things you could try that may help. Blessings, Beth
  3. I went to school with a poor girl named "Marcia Mello". She happened to be a round and plump sort of a girl too. I felt terribly for her.
  4. My dh is a chemistry teacher. If you have specific topics or questions, pm me and I'll check with him about resources for you.
  5. I'm a thrower who has been trying to force myself to knit continental. I knit quite a bit and have been having some pain in my right shoulder from the throwing. I can now knit a little continental but am having trouble with the purling.
  6. Thanks to everyone for their replies, exactly the advice that I was looking for. :)
  7. My dh uses this at his public high school as supplement, but would not consider it a full course, at least at the high school level. I can't comment on the lower levels. His school has a comprehensive license available to all students.
  8. I played as a young child using the Suzuki method. My 7yo dd would like to begin playing, but she is left handed. Anyone with experience as to whether or not a specific left handed instrument is recommended. She'd need a 1/2 size instrument and I could borrow one from a friend IF we use a traditional (right handed) model. I've gotten conflicting advise so far. Some say to have them play traditionally, others suggest a left handed instrument. I wouldn't say my dd is truly ambi-dextrous (sp?) but she is able to do some activities such as sports and using scissors with her right hand.
  9. Most mean roosters didn't live long at our place, but I've heard that others have had success with carrying a spray bottle with water and dousing at the first sign of aggression. This can be done from a bit of a distance with some practice.
  10. I think they are both great choices. Veritas will give you a more classical and chronological approach to history while Sonlight is not chronological and doesn't follow the history cycle strictly speaking. Some years are only World and others only American, etc. In the younger grades the readers aren't keyed to the history either. We use SL, but if you're wanting a classical curric. it may not be for you.
  11. We're in Ch8 of LOF Geometry now and it's going quite smoothly. I'm not giving my dd any direct instruction unless she comes across a stumbling block. So far, so good. But like you, I do wish a home companion was available.
  12. We're using Geometry and it is very thorough. No experience with Trig. yet, but we're planning to continue with LOF.
  13. We're in suburban Augusta (Columbia County) and are Christians.
  14. Our oldest will be in 9th grade next year. We're in the planning stages now and I'm wondering if any have experience with courses from GVS (GA virtual school). I know that students can take 1 unit each semester with state funding. We're considering it for English and History specifically. Any advice or experience to share? We're also considering various options for getting an accredited diploma for her. Does anyone have specific umbrella programs accredited by the GAC to recommend? We're unsure whether we can get a transcript that way or whether we should pursue getting accredited ourselves. Thanks in advance!
  15. I had one during my 4th c-sec in 2006 as I was advised to avoid future preg. by my physician. Once my cycles resumed (about a year later as I nursed exclusively) my cycles were noticeably heavy and considerably more painful. I also began to battle severe PMS and have a reduced libido. I've now been recommended for a hysterectomy as I've become anemic due to the nature of my cycles. I've not made a decision yet about that surgery. Disclaimer: My decision was made on a quick, emergency basis as I went into early pre-term labor which could not be stopped. My doc had mentioned it before, but we had not made a prayerful decision about it yet. I had been in labor for several hours when I was prepped for my c-sec. and signed the paperwork for the tubal. Suffice it say to say that during the throes of labor is NOT a good time to make such a decision. I regretted the decision almost immediately. The physical results that I've had though are very real and quite seperate in my mind.
  16. Well, we worked through Saxon's Alg. 1 text last year and there is a bit of geometry worked in. As I recall, finding area of various polygons and circles was discussed heavily. Also some work with triangles and the pythagorean theorum. We decided to take a year and tackle geometry seperately as our dd is only in 8th this year. We'll cover Alg. 2 next year. I'm undecided as to whether we'll return to Saxon for this or not. My dd is working her way through Life of Fred Geometry and so far almost all of the material is new to her. Finally, in Ch7 she hit some review (area). We're also supplementing with a lot of constructions, though LOF has some of these. Saxon certainly didn't do any formal geometric proofs in Alg. 1. We've used Saxon all along with her though and it does seem to be a very solid program. Many students have great results with it. According to Saxon, Geometry supplementation is not necessary. Hopefully someone who's completed the Alg. 2 will respond to your question.
  17. How about Notgrass- you could skip the Bible component if desired.
  18. We're using the notebooking journal with my 2nd grader this year and she's enjoying it. Apologia has several pages available as a free download on their site, most of the first module. A first grader probably could not do the writing by herself, but you could scribe for her. I do this some for my student. The 4th grader should be able to work pretty independantly. It's added a lot to our study and I'd recommend it.
  19. FB terms of service require a child to be 13, so my oldest dd had to patiently wait until her birthday this past summer. Then I set up it with strict search and privacy standards. It's been fine for us, she enjoys keeping up with those friends and family who aren't close by.
  20. Congrats on making that decision. With our oldest in 8th, we've been wrestling with next year's plans as well. After lots of prayer and discussion we're leaning towards keep her home also. Like you, I have mixed feelings about it.
  21. My dh ( a public high school teacher) has resorted to this tactic in his classroom in an attempt to get his students to cover up. It's been pretty successful. Many of them throw on their sweatshirts at his classroom door.
  22. We're doing Geometry with our 8th grade dd right now and it's going great. She enjoys it better than Algebra actually, although she did well in in last year. Our curric. includes proofs and constructions and she's done well with both. I think it's helpful that she's studied logic, it's closely related.
