Life of Fred: awesome? or random & weird?
Bree replied to alisoncooks's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
For us it's worth the investment for my ds. We all love Fred . My dd actually made a Fred doodle on her horizons math. I pair LOF with Khan academy for my 3rd grader and it's been great :) -
We do Khan and the Life of Fred books. I have Singapore books that I eye to make sure we are hitting the things we should for normal grade level. My son loves it and hates to write so it is a nice fit for my oldest :)

Health care provider's response to your spotting in early pregnancy?
Bree replied to razorbackmama's topic in The Chat Board
I've had both responses from two different doctors. My first bleeding experience I was a little further along and I had partial précis that was causing it. Dr told me to come immediately to the hospital that time. My 4th pregnancy I had spotting and different dr said nothing could be done so I just had to wait and see. I had spotting for about 3 days with this pregnancy and didn't even bother to call this time. Hope everything goes well with u and the little one. -
Ever want to stop homeschooling one of your children?
Bree replied to bethben's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My dd who just turned 7 makes me feel like that at times :) she would of been a good only child. Truthfully having her on meds for ADHD has helped and she thrives on stuff where she is in charge like time4Learning. I really have to do things differently with her and it is ALOT of WORK!!! -
Congratulations!!! I follow the guidelines from the book Trim healthy Momma. Basically keep meals either low fat with some carbs and lean meats or high fat meals with few carbs. It's helped a lot, we're expecting #5 too and so far so good weight wise :)

4th Grade Language Arts recommendations please
Bree replied to StephTX's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I love Shirley because it just makes English make sense to me. It is more teacher intensive and teaches parsing instead of diagramming. We are going to do Rod n Staff for 4th grade since they can do it more independently and is a strong program. -
Angry, Aggressive 7 YO - What type of evaluation to get?
Bree replied to JumpyTheFrog's topic in The Chat Board
I would get him evaluated. My 7 year old is a lot like that. She has sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD. She takes meds for her ADHD and now she is able to handle when she gets overloaded from her SPD. We have done some behavioral therapy too and it has been great. We have had issues with her since birth and yes she still has her problems to overcome, but now she can manage them and she isn't hurting her siblings or me anymore. Your Pediatrician should be able to recommend to you where to have him evaluated. I also was very anti meds before we tried them, but for us they have made such a vast difference that i am so thankful that we did. -
Have you made sure it's not allergies. My ds always seemed to be having recurrent colds and I finally took him to the doctors. For him it was allergies. We also had our ductwork professionally cleaned and that helped all of us .

The one good thing about Sonlight is that you will have all the books you need. If you are wanting it secular you will have to drop some, but that isn't too hard to do. Truthfully if I were in your situation I would probably go with SOTW when your dc is ready and get the Activity guide so that you can pick and chose the books you want to read to your kids. I do a mix of SL and SOTW. We are using SOTW instead of SL C spine but add in the SL books since most of them are scheduled in the activity guide from SOTW. There are also a lot more picture books that are suggested where Sonlight has more chapter books without pictures. Also, Sonlight doesn't really give you many crafts, it is mostly a reading schedule where the AG for SOTW gives you multiple activities each chapter plus mapwork to do. My favorite is they have it on CD so if you get tired of reading they can do it for you :) I do really like Sonlight for science though. I love how they have fun science experiments and a DVD of them also so you can watch and do also.

Random Topic: Do you feel it appropriate for a Dad to.....
Bree replied to Mandylubug's topic in The Chat Board
I would say it was inappropriate. He has known her 3 years so it's not like they just met. Then again I married at 19 so that part didn't bother me so much...then again my parents begged us to move in together and they would pay for it :) -
I voted the bigger one since we did one on the main floor with our 4th bedroom. We used part of it as a toy room for the little ones but it really made me feel closed in. We use our kitchen/dining room now :)

We do them every Monday but only the fitted sheet for us. The top sheet always ends up not being used so they only have the comforters :) those don't always get washed weekly either.

How much do you pay for martial arts, and is it local?
Bree replied to amo_mea_filiis.'s topic in The Chat Board
If money is a factor do you have a YMCA in your area. A lot of times they have martial arts and scholarships for kids. My idles has been taking TKD for about 3 years and it has been so worth the money for us. Ours is around 105 for 2 classes a week. There are others in our area that are around 65 but they only meet once a week and their progress is a lot slower. -
Would you put your child in school for a year?
Bree replied to a topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have wanted to at times but no I wouldn't. Have you looked into some coop classes or something along that line? Maybe give u a little break without it being full time. -
I grounded myself from buying diapers with my amazon prime account because I always seemed to tag on some sort of extra curriculum stuff. I mean I have 3-4 LA curriculums for grade K-3 each. :)

You buy whatever curriculum you want

Testing is optional in TN with HLA. We use it too and love them :)
-
I did well with it too. They keep fats and higher fat meats together with low carbs for S meals and lean meats with carbs for E meals. My cycles actually regulated after using their recommendations, I can go for a year without a cycle, and I lost some weight.

My friend had her son on MUS for years and switched him over to Fred in highschool. He loved it and has had no problem transitioning over to college math.

Struggles in Math - something more?
Bree replied to naturally's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Have you had his eyes checked. My ds generally only struggles with subtraction with borrowing and we found out for him he needed glasses. -
why oh why won't he just do his work?!
Bree replied to desiraejb's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have days like that with my 8 year old too. Most our problems were due to his fatiguing when he wrote and later I found out he needed glasses. For us things go easier when we do more orally. He can write more this year but about 2 sentences is all I could get out of him last year without a meltdown. We do have occasional math issues but I start taking away privliges like game time and he usually responds well if it is just behavior related. So it could be an attitude issue, but there may be something underlying the cause of the behavior too. -
Does anyone have "mandatory" quiet time?
Bree replied to sierramv1's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes, I'd go crazy without it ;) We get up and go to bed late so our quiet time is around 1:30-3:30. The kids can play in their room or read or color. I do let my 3 year old watch a movie during this time but just because she wont sleep anymore and likes to color on the walls and make a huge mess, especially with chocolate syrup :) If you do it all the time then they get use to it and it is so nice for mommy ;) -
If you've used 100 Lessons for reading...
Bree replied to Chris in VA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We were at about 2nd grade reading level when we finished it -
Breastfeeding, iron deficiency, and young toddlers.
Bree replied to AimeeM's topic in The Chat Board
Make sure you feed the iron rich foods with vitamin c and not calcium. What would you switch to? At least in breast milk you are getting iron. I've supplemented with iron and stick it with juice and they've been ok with that but that's about the only time they get juice at that age :)
