  1. Don't be frightened by Tapestry! Especially since you'll be using Year 2, you'll have great discussions already scripted for you. You read the question: he answers. If you've already used Tapestry with him at the D level then he is already prepared for this.

I've been in a co-op this past year with two moms who don't have a lot of background in either history or lit. One thing that I encouraged them to do over and over is to trust the Tapestry script, read the yellow teacher's page and then read the script with your child. It works! Sure, sometimes you'll have to probe them a little, but you already have those skills! They are simple mom skills: "What do you think that means? Can you tell me more about that?"

You can also use Notgrass as your text, you may have to work out a schedule to do that, but Tapestry does show high school texts being used on their alternate page.

If you compare Tapestry to MFW you may find that the books are much easier for him to read (the do use some things in common so those will be the same). This means he'll "like" MFW more because it will be easier for him to read and work with. I'm not totally sure this is a great standard, but a lot depends on the child and their goals.

Except for acquiring books for Tapestry you really could hand it off to your son and let him deal with it. He can print out maps, SAPS etc and go. I assume that you don't spend all day at the computer so he can easily quickly print things off or even read everything off the computer. You'll read the yellow teacher's part and do the discussion with him.

I do all the printing over the summer. I do that so I can bind up a workbook that I hand to each child. Does it take some time? Yes. But I suspect that I could do it all in one 8 hour day; that's for the full year and two children.

What I would suggest for you is to try doing this for the first unit, if he hates it, you hate it , then switch; try it with him doing the work of printing stuff off. Step in and do an evaluation between the sixth and eight week. This way you are only working for one unit at a time.

Thank you Candid. That is very good advice. Did you find that there were many questions that were not answered in the reading assignments or the teacher notes? I have heard this is a problem at the R level. This would be very frustrating for me. I really wish I had more confidence in myself and could just pick something and go with it. I'm so afraid of making the wrong choice and wasting my time and money. I daydream about what I would do if I had lots of money! ;) I think it would make this all a little easier :001_smile:

    Thank you again,

  2. I don't know if money is factoring into this equation for you at all, but it sounds like in an ideal world you'd be happier having your oldest do the MFW 10 and your youngers use TOG2. You'd have money into printing all those TOG2 pages, so it's not like it's a free option, and your time is worth something. Maybe you'd have something lying around you could sell to fund it...

Thanks, OhElizabeth, for the encouragement. Yes, I would rather do that. Money is definitely a factor. I keep thinking that too.....my time is worth something! I did try to sell an almost complete Sonlight Core 400, but did not get one response. I even lowered the price three times. I don't have much luck selling things on this board. I don't really know what I do wrong. But you are right, I should keep trying to sell something. Thank you again for your help.

  3. Yes, please do! He really works well on his own. He just needs to know what to do and have the material. He is my "student" and makes my life easier :)

One year I made a notebook for him with everything and had it spiral bound for him. He was in the D level then. This worked very well, until we got to unit 2, which I had not made a workbook for :glare: That is why I know I must plan it all before school starts. Not just for him, but for the others too. I guess it will just mean a lot of late nights for a few weeks. Please share your wisdom with me.

    Thanks!

  4. No, I have not. I would strongly encourage you to do one or the other. My thought was to use the Notgrass books as a spine for TOG. I already own them and could save some money.

I think it will be too much to do both. Since you have a large family I would lean toward TOG. What are some specific reasons for your hesitation? Something about the Rhetoric level has always scared the life out of me. I feel like it is only for really educated people. So, I guess in a sense, I'm afraid of failing. Also, there is more work for me with TOG. I have to order books from the library ( I can't buy them all), print out the maps, SAP's, etc. I've done it before, and I'm doing it again this year for the other three levels. I have to get it done in the summer, or it will not happen. I think I'm more than a little frustrated that I have to go this route. What I'd like to do is MFW for my high school student and HOD for my other kids. I want the schedule and all the books. Much less headache for me! That is not going to happen with the amount of money I have to work with. I'm irritated that I have to do things the hard way. Sounds wimpy, I know, but I'm TIRED! :)

What is it that MFW has that you think you will not get in TOG? My son did MFW for 9th grade last year and really enjoyed it. I really didn't have to do anything. He is very independent and likes it that way. It was great to just hand him the guide and the books and let him go to it. What if he doesn't like the Rhetoric level? Then I will have done all that prep work and he will be miserable. I just wish I knew if it was interesting. I know he will like the Church History.

Thank you Jennifer for your encouragement and questions. I really needed to bounce this off of someone. I think it's driving me crazy!

  5. Hi,

I would love some advice on Tapestry's Y2 Rhetoric level.

Did your son/daughter find it interesting? I was going to use MFW for 10th grade next year, but am contemplating using TOG because I already own it. I just can't tell, by looking at the books, if it would be very interesting. The other levels look great, and we are using them. But I'm just not sure about the R level. I don't want to go through all that planning and work just to have my son find history to be a drudgery.

    Thanks!

  6. I was wondering if someone can help me ~ I've tried to enter in assignments and it just acts crazy. Even if I fill in all the fields correctly it will enter in the assignment sometimes 3 times, sometimes it says that it is already completed. Even once I do get a few that look right I can't figure out where I go to see who has to do what on what day.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here. If I can't use it how can they say that it is 80% finished and actually charge me. When I contacted support they just asked me what browser I used then sent me an email listing updates.

I'm running out of time and I have wasted so much time. If I were to try something else what would I even try? I have three students and there is absolutely no way that I can enter in 1000's of assignments (8 subjects 175 days) like this. Should I just go back to paper?

Have you tried HST + ? It's a great program if all you need it for is lesson plans/ assignments etc. And their customer service is really excellent. I am trying out the beta WPD also. It is a lot nicer to look at than HST :)

But honestly, I don't know how they will compete with HST in the Lesson planning part of their program. Once you learn how to use it (HST), it can do just about anything you need it to. It's just not a planner you would use for everything else in your life. I think that is where the WPD's strength is. But for those who have learned and used HST, it will be hard to give up the versatility it offers for your homeschool planning. JMHO.

  7. I was thinking of doing the same thing. What would be the difference between that and a Sonlight schedule that was all pre-printed?

I've tried HST + every year. The thing that trips me up is staying on top of the printing of the schedule. I am just not disciplined enough to do this each weekend. I feel like if I had it printed up ahead of time, then more would get done. I'm still debating this though. I'd have to make 5 planners!

  8. I just got my login information and have been exploring their planner. I'm frustrated at the "little" things that aren't working. It looks like it will be grand when it is completed, but in the mean time I think the "bugs" could turn potential customers away. It might have been better to have a test group to work out all of those things before releasing it.

  9. Same thing happened to me. They have to send you a second e-mail with log-in information. I get the impression that it is supposed to come through automatically but it didn't for me. I bought last Saturday, e-mailed wondering why I didn't have access on Sunday, and was hooked up by Monday.

I think they should be upfront about that before you buy it. Usually, when you order something online, it comes through right away. I did email them to let them know of my disappointment. It just seems a little.....dishonest.

I guess I'll have to wait till Monday..... :)
