  1. I don't have experience of this, but I have been on several Extended Fasting forums over the years and there are people claiming that long fasts (greater than 72 hours) induced autophagy in their bodies and they lost their double chin, scar tissue, excess skin, moles etc etc. I do extended fasting frequently, but not to that extent. Longer fasting requires proper electrolyte supplementing and a gradual build up in fasting stamina. So, I am posting this so that you could research it and see if it makes sense for you and your lifestyle.
  2. I didn't read the entire thread (it would be better not to offer cake to a diabetic at all, in my opinion, as I have many diabetics in my family and that is what we do). But, for a newly diagnosed diabetic, if you insist on a cake for them, you could make a Keto Cake with a monk fruit based sweetener. This is the option that is as close to no-carb/non-sugary/"natural" as I can think of. There are commercial cake mixes for Keto-Monkfruit cakes available (Lakanto brand mixes are available on Amazon or WholeFoods) or you can find a keto cake recipe online that uses monk fruit. https://www.lakanto.com/products/cake-mix https://www.lakanto.com/blogs/recipes/instant-pot-keto-birthday-cake?_pos=13&_sid=330274d62&_ss=r https://www.lakanto.com/blogs/recipes/sugar-free-classic-carrot-cake-no-added-sugar
  3. coconut macaroons: I use the following small batch recipe with Bob's Red Mill GF flour and it turns out great. It can easily be scaled up for your party or you could find another coconut macaroon recipe that is for a bigger batch. https://minibatchbaker.com/mini-batch-coconut-macaroons/#recipe
  4. My Vitamin is 20 years+ and working fine. I use it once or twice per day.
  5. I am currently making a vegan version of stuffed, curried bell peppers in the crockpot. You can use any meat of your choice to make it a meat filled version, if you wish. I mix: 1/2 cup TVP rehydrated in hot water with a pinch of curry powder (substitute with rinsed canned black beans or other protein) 1/2 cup red onions diced, 1/2 cup yellow squash diced, 1/4 cup carrots and peas, the tops of 3 bell peppers diced (cut off the top 1 cm of the bell peppers to make a cavity, remove all the seeds and membranes, chop the tops into tiny pieces), use the bottoms of the bell peppers to fill with stuffing, 1/2 cup uncooked and rinsed quinoa, 3/4 cup tomato sauce or puree, garlic and ginger minced to taste, salt, 1 Tablespoon curry powder Mix them all in a large mixing bowl. The quinoa can be uncooked and raw, it will cook in the crockpot. Stuff the bell peppers with this mix. Add 1/2 cup water to crockpot, arrange the stuffed bell peppers inside carefully, cook on high for 3 hours or on low for 6 hours. Switch off the power after it is done cooking. Open the lid and add some shredded cheese and pistachios as toppings, optionally, and close the lid for 10 minutes to melt the cheese in the residual heat. Add chopped cilantro for garnish.
  6. The colored belts ceremony in our studio is formal and held on a separate occasion, not related to testing day. Black belts get their belt immediately, but their official certificate from Kukkiwon takes a few months to arrive, at which time, there is a formal ceremony for the certificate presentation.
  7. I have in-laws who cook everything, dominate, loudly talk about how much work they needed to put in to get all that food ready and will obstruct my attempt to contribute or help or even bring anything to the event. This is their way of "including" me because they have to for the sake of their son/brother but keeping the important stuff like food to themselves. So, when the time comes, they enjoy having the spotlight 100% on themselves and how hard they worked for the sake of their extended family (extreme Martyr complex), how talented a cook they are and how delicious the food is, how competent they are at putting this together, and then bask in all the thanks and gratitude of the guests, then get on WhatsApp and boast to their large gossip circle about who said complimentary things about them at the event, how their cooking was well received etc. I call this behavior Attention Mongering while at the same time taking passive digs at me. The official reason they give me for not including me even when I offer is that I tend to be "busy" and they don't want to bother me out of consideration for me! If this is the kind of domineering SIL you have, my sympathies! I am capable of keeping my distance, putting on a pleasant face and enjoying the company of younger people who don't get involved in the politics. The last family get-together we attended, the SIL and MIL dominated yet again and provided every single thing and the decorations. I ended up contributing paper plates, cups, fancier disposable cutlery and about 200 water bottles from Costco. Nobody ever complimented me for doing anything, the spotlight was on them 100% and that is how they wanted it to be and I am totally fine with that because it is their choice to behave that way.
  8. the "sprouting lids" are great too if you are into sprouting seeds for salads.
  9. I didn't read the other answers. I would absolutely not ask that child to get into my car. I might offer my cellphone and ask the child to call their mom. If that did not work, i might look up the contact numbers of the Principal or some other administrator in that school district's website, call them and ask them how to help the child in this situation. If that does not work, I might park the car on the street, walk with the child to the school, go to the front desk and explain what happened and then file a complaint about the bus situation and ask the secretary in the front desk to write an email or note for the parent of that child. All that being said, in my area, each school has one police officer assigned to it and they routinely show up when this kind of situation happens. They drive down streets looking for kids who are not in the pickup line when the parents show up to pick them up. I would contact the local police station and ask them what to do. But, it is not OK to encourage the child to hop into the car of the friendly lady who looks nice and helpful when mom does not ensure that the child's needs are met. This kind of parent who goes off to work before a small child leaves should have given their child a cellphone or instructed the child to go to a trusted neighbor or friend's house if unplanned things happen to them.
  10. Cooking chicken in Nyquil seems to be trending on social media recently: https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/20/health/dangerous-social-media-challenges-wellness/index.html
  11. Add 1/3 cup sugar (of any kind) and 2 Tablespoons of water. Adjust the water to get your required consistency by adding more or less.
  12. My son took 2 AP's last year. Both were taught at home and he went through the Barron's test prep books for a quick review and then worked on 2 practice tests around 3 weeks before the exam. He took AP Comp Sci A and AP Calculus BC. In addition, for the AP Comp Sci, we added another prep book called "Be prepared for the AP Comp Sci Exam" by Maria Litvin: my son preferred this one compared to the Barron's because it was more interesting to work through than the Barron's book. Overall, my son preferred the previous year's tests for practice (the ones that you can get by registering to the AP sites) because he found the topic reviews in the test prep books too repetitive and slow going. This year, he will take 3 AP's and I will buy the Barron's books for those 3. This is just for quick review before taking the older practice tests from the collegeboard website.
  13. So, the health care provider can administer this vaccine? Good to know as I thought that i had to go to the county run site to get it. Thanks!
  14. "Everything will be fine ...": I hate this statement as there is no rhyme or reason or logic that something that went wrong suddenly decides to correct itself and "everything" will be fine. I hate this more than all the others mentioned because this is my DH's favorite phrase to say every single time things go bad! And my teen has picked up on this habit and now says "Everything will be fine, mom, just relax!". How can forgetting to register for a class which you wanted to attend and the deadline has passed be counted as "fine"? But, this is how my family minus me operates all the time!
  15. I started out with the NYT's no knead overnight bread. Then, after I gained some skills, I branched off into sourdough, whole grain and other kinds of bread. We consume a lot of bread and I have been trying to bake bread for a long time in order to control the contents that go into the bread. My first success was the no-knead bread. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/11376-no-knead-bread An updated version of the NYT no-knead bread: https://www.seriouseats.com/better-no-knead-bread-recipe
  16. Baking, all kinds. I am vegan and never baked because finding substitutes for butter, egg etc was tiresome. I learned to bake using aquafaba, flax egg, bob’s red mill egg replacer etc and I can now stop buying baked goods entirely. I also learned to make sourdough bread and since my family consumes a lot of bread, it makes for less processed foods that I buy and I can add many custom inclusions and home milled flours to the dough. Moong bean eggs for eggless scrambles that resemble JustEgg. I also make egg free mayo, aioli and salad dressings. So, eating more salads is not boring anymore. Previously I used to buy bottled dressing and never finished them before their expiry date. black bean burgers. They freeze well and I can make a large batch to last me a while. I use Kenji Lopez’s recipe and like the texture better than the commercial ones I used to buy.
  17. If it is savory (no sugar added), roll it flat and make a focaccia out of it (add olive oil, herbs, salt as toppings).
  18. Same here! What is it and how do I use it?
  19. I have used a greek recipe that looks kind of similar. Boil the beets (in my case, I pressure cook in instant pot for 20 minutes with skin on). Then i let it cool, peel and slice into rounds. Add a dressing of vinegar (red or white wine vinegar), garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and olive oil. I got the recipe from a former coworker who is half greek. Don't know if it is the same as yours.
  20. This mediterranean White Bean soup is my husband's favorite and I make a lot of it and freeze. https://feelgoodfoodie.net/recipe/white-bean-soup/
  21. Very generally, without a background of complicated relationships, if I were eating in front of anyone, I would offer them food and go out of my way to bring enough for everyone when I visit. If I visit someone unexpectedly during mealtimes, be it a friend or relative, they have always offered something or other to me, including a part of their meal, a drink, a snack or sometimes rushed to the kitchen to make an extra dish so that there was enough for everyone. This is basic hospitality and kindness. It has happened this way with even coworkers, my kid's tutor, my kid's piano teacher etc who have offered their packed lunches or snacks if they notice us not eating while they eat. Having said that, with your mother, there will always be a problem no matter how you approach the food issue. She will find fault if you offer her your lunch, she will complain if she has to provide you food etc. I think that part of grey rocking is to intentionally avoid problematic interactions with the party who is covert and manipulative. This is the perfect solution. Do not have any interactions with her where a meal is involved. Time your visit such that you leave your home right after you eat, don't eat a snack at her place. Always politely insist that you already ate and don't need anything. When you leave, either eat a snack in the car or go to your favorite place to pick up a coffee or a treat and proceed with the day.
  22. You can use food grade mineral oil or butcher block oil. I have an island on casters (small one) and it has a butcher block top. I don't cut on the surface, but I have it just in case I decide to use it for that purpose. I also have 2 worktables with butcher block tops for hobby purposes in our study room.
  23. If they are the Snapware Glass containers from Costco, they are perfect for salads and you don't need to buy the glass lock containers! I make 4 salads on Sunday night, each with a slightly different combo or toppings with an added fruit (blueberries, mandarins, grapes etc) and they last until the following Thursday. I layer the components in the glass lock container but it should work if you mix it up as well. I don't add dressing to my salads and I keep it separate. I don't eat a salad on Fridays as I switch up my lunch to something else once a week.
  24. I use the glasslock brand containers for salad and a silicone squeeze bottle for dressing. https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/CCC1B0D7-F412-4D23-81B7-7B22CD42AD5F you can get them from Amazon or target. I find them easier to eat out of.
