  1. As she cooks for her family, give her a nice kitchen appliance (small or large) or a nice stainless steel sauce pan or a carbon steel saute pan or some such item. She can put it to use daily and you would have given her something that will not be wasteful.
  2. I have seen this product selling for cheaper in restaurant supply stores. So, if you really want it, you should check out your local restaurant supply stores (I live near Ghirardelli, so every store carries their products, so easy to find).
  3. My old IP died as well. I used it every day. I have a backup IP that I use now, but looking for a better alternative as well. Following along for recommendations ...
  4. I don't want to quote any of the posts here, but, my suggestion, if the OP is open to it is that if she wants to be there for her FIL as he has been there for her in her times of need, there can be safer workarounds to conventional situations so that her sons are never alone with their cousins and she does not have sole supervision of SIL's kids: one example could be that when the older kids were watching a game on TV and BB&H takes the toddler off the grandpa's watch she could take him into a separate area of the house and they play a toddler friendly game there or bake a cake together or read some picture book together or anything that will keep the child busy other than driving with the child to a park alone. I don't think that Pops at his age can be called upon to supervise as needed as he could need a nap or need the quiet etc. A good option, taking into account all the considerations that she has, is to stay on-campus when her kids are spending time at FIL's house ... and ask FIL if there are video monitors, where they are located and who has access to them just to get that info for reference and her own safety. OP, also, the next time that you take your car in for a repair or checkup, ask the mechanic to check for any monitors or tags attached to it.
  5. She probably has set up baby monitors (Alexa and the like) with video feeds in your FIL’s house given how much time her kids spend there with your FIL. If so, she could have seen you taking the nephew outside and called your FIL. Also, your kids’ dad could have been in her house when she was watching or maybe he has access to it as well. (Or it could be the Ring door camera as others mentioned).
  6. I suggest that you buy him a couple of pairs of cheap knit gloves for now and then get him better ones for christmas. I bought a few knit gloves from Target for my son and he uses them to keep his fingers warm before a music performance. They are cheap enough that you can buy a few pairs if you are concerned about them getting lost: https://www.target.com/p/men-s-classic-knit-touch-gloves-goodfellow-co/-/A-85781734 https://www.target.com/p/muk-luks-men-s-marl-gloves/-/A-86242448
  7. I have some stainless steel (Allclad), some uncoated Carbon Steel (italian brands) and some cast iron. I don't use parchment and silicone. So, I need metal that can withstand some level of scratching and that is why my first preference is for seasoned Carbon Steel and Cast Iron. I do own a bunch of old pyrex which hold up well, but food tends to stick to them for me, so I use them infrequently.
  8. Though she will appeal, many are guessing that her sentence will be commuted to 4 years for good behavior and out of those 4, perhaps 3 years will be on probation. So, she might get away with far lesser than 11 years behind bars.
  9. Could you change out his room and exchange it with his sibling? Perhaps a change of scene will help him overcome his fear? Sometimes, shadows on the windows from trees outside and the way light seeps into the room in the early hours used to creep me out when I was a teen and I remember getting up at night to hang sheets over the curtains to cut out any light that might play on the windows. So, since you said that this is an issue in the new house, it could be due to such things and a room with a different layout might help. Also, if he is either too hot or too cold, it would make it uncomfortable. And I suggest that you play either an audiobook or classical and calming music for him and sit with him until he falls asleep for a while longer to see if he just outgrows this stage. Do you have a pet? Could the pet sleep in his room?
  10. Can you have cashews? My vegan husband’s snacks are salted cashews (sometimes sweet version of roasted cashews) and salted pistachios. A small amount is very filling.
  11. My son's tutor, who is healthy and in his 50's, who masks all the time (but sometimes wears masks over just his mouth because it is too hot in his classroom) who is vaccinated and who had asymptomatic covid in the summer during the Omicron surge (a mandatory test caught it) suddenly got ill this week during lessons - confusion, dizziness etc. He was rushed to an ER where, fortunately, a doctor quickly diagnosed him with "Spontaneous Subdural Hematoma" and sent him to emergency surgery. Apparently this doctor has been seeing several cases of it happening recently and thinks that previous Covid could be the trigger (he speculates that perhaps this is one of the symptoms that Long-Covid presents as). So, as you said, we may have no idea about what will happen 6 months down the line.
  12. Vegan Cauliflower soup: https://simple-veganista.com/vegan-cauliflower-soup/#tasty-recipes-34504-jump-target : I follow a recipe similar to this one, but I roast the cauliflower before adding to the recipe or Vegan borscht: https://www.feastingathome.com/borscht/
  13. Go to the websites of the prospective colleges that they will apply to and check to see if they give credit for AP Scores (some universities require a 4 or 5 on AP test to skip some courses while others don't have that requirement). Depending on that, you can get an idea if it is worth taking the AP test or not for them.
  14. Since the violin shop is close to you, I can share what we did for my DS's violins as he upgraded from smaller to full size violins: the shop will allow you to take 3-4 violins of your choice (they will choose for you if your DD can not) to your teacher and the teacher will play those violins themselves, suggest which ones are suitable and then have your DD play her current repertoire with them during the lesson to select the final violin that she prefers for its tone, brightness and ease of handling etc. This is how we have chosen all the violins for my son through the years. Your DD has an opportunity to take Orchestra, Chamber Music etc as electives in her college years if she is so inclined. So, keep that in mind when you select the violin as she needs a pretty decent sounding instrument for such purposes. If you are looking for a price tag, I would suggest the $2000-$4000 range for violin + bow for someone who is a serious student but not into competitions or pursuing a music degree in the future. Looking at the price tags you listed, get the best sounding one from each of the $2250 - $4000 price ranges in the store for a week and take them to the teacher for evaluation.
  15. If this is an online forum, could I please know what forum it is? (or I could be misunderstanding what "board" means here altogether). I have a son wanting to double major (in music and a STEM subject) in a couple of years and I might need to start researching on it soon. Thanks!
  16. check out https://summer.stanford.edu/courses/phil-50s-introduction-formal-methods-philosophy - this is sort of local to you, so it could work. ETA: they offer a couple more advanced philosophy classes if you search on their course catalog.
  17. I use the instant pot to cook rice almost everyday. The "Rice" setting on it is fine for white rice. But, for brown rice you need to use the manual setting and set a longer time. For each variety of rice, you need to play around with how much water to add to the rice to get the consistency that you like. If you already own an instant pot, I suggest that you try making rice in it and see if that will fit your needs.
  18. I ordered one when that old thread was posted. I tried it once, it felt weird and my DH was making jokes about it and then I put it away. I will give it another shot (after I locate it!).
  19. A lot (more than 20) of my acquaintances who stopped masking recently got covid from going to restaurants (weather is still good, so many of them ate on outside patios), movie theaters, sporting events and shopping in malls. It is absolutely possible to get severe covid in these situations as my friends have experienced and it probably was because they were infected by a heavier viral load. My personal theory is that when one can not move around for a prolonged period of time and there is someone nearby who is infectious, then the chances of breathing in a heavier viral load from them are high. This is the case in airplane travel and in movie theaters. But, if you are moving around or if there are open windows or you are socializing outside in a park, chances of the virus dissipating in the air you breathe are higher. I still mask everywhere. This is because I don't want to get covid for as long as possible. It is just a matter of time until I get it because my family members need to be in social situations where they have to eat with others (business lunches, travel team for sports etc) and we can not isolate if one of us catches covid. But, right now, I am still the weird lady who wears a double mask when buying vegetables and sitting in on her son's extracurricular lessons. @Not_a_NumberI hope that you and your family recover quickly. From what I hear from friends, the symptoms are waning in 3-4 days for several of them who got sick with covid recently.
  20. I use loose darjeeling tea for making Chai and matcha in powder form or my matcha drinks. For everything else, like the green tea, spearmint and other assorted herbal teas that I drink occasionally, I use tea bags.
  21. Thank you! I love your skirt with the piano keyboard motifs and you have an awesome accent 🙂
  22. Not true. My family member has stomach cramps and pains and is curled over in pain for 3-4 days until things correct themselves. Not everyone with an allergy needs to go into anaphylactic response.
  23. my cousin who is on a vegan keto diet has frequent calf cramps due to hypoglycemia. for her, eating a few meals with carbs or drinking a fruit smoothie fixes the problem immediately. So, that is something to keep in mind since you are eating a keto diet as well.
  24. We did every problem. And most of the alcumus until he reached the "Intermediate" AOPS books. The problemsets are designed to provoke deep thinking and to increase problem solving stamina. My child took what seemed like forever to complete the entire series of AOPS books because of this approach. But, has developed a very strong problem solving ability as a result. He is doing post-calculus work now and his instructor feedback is that he is not intimidated when faced with a problem that he has never seen before, approaches it head-on, tackles it using a multitude of approaches and sometimes submits more than one valid solution to the problem which even the instructor did not think about. This level of deep thinking is what the AOPS problem sets in the books build. So, if your goal is to develop solid problem solving skills, doing all problems in the AOPS books is one way to go. If the goal is to accelerate or reach AP Calculus in a short time frame, I have seen many skipping the AOPS Challenge problems and alcumus and finishing one book in one semester. Some move to other texts to increase the speed or if their kids lose interest in AOPS.
  25. I keep the base same and add varying fruit/veggies in addition to it. My recipe makes 2.5 large servings and is a meal replacement for 2 people in my household who skip lunch due to their schedules. They drink it as soon as they enter the house as they both play rigorous sports as well. Protein base: 2 scoops of Vegan protein powder (21 g protein), 3 Tablespoons of hemp hearts (10 g protein), 1.5 cups of unflavored organic Soy milk (12 g protein) Flavor base: 5 pods of whole cardamom Fruit base: 1 cup frozen mango chunks, 1 packet frozen Acai+Guarana superfruit smoothie pulp (costco has it in large packs), 1 frozen banana, 1 cup frozen orange juice (I juice fresh oranges and freeze in 1 cup portions), 1 cut apple, 1 cup frozen mixed berries Veggie base: 1 cup fresh spinach washed and chopped to fit my Vitamix jar (I have the smaller stainless steel jar) or 1 cup chopped kale or swiss chard, 1 cup roughly chopped carrots varying produce: these change day to day - small piece of ginger, cucumbers, lemon juice, avocado, celery, cauliflower, fresh Peaches, pineapples, strawberries depending on what I have on hand Optional add ons: 2 Tablespoons rolled oats, 1 teaspoon Moringa superfood powder
