  1. Just googled them and see that you can do these out of state...Please let us (or PM me) about the results- I'm very interested for others here.
  2. Interesting as there are even some from the UK, Australia and Canada....Could come in handy for us :-)
  3. Were homeschoolers able to do this? just curious as I hadn't seen news and I'd written the CB...
  4. The second AP Eng Lang class we used was with Maya and when it started and I saw the class size and the use of TA's, I had my reservations. But none of them were founded because the teacher does an excellent job of keeping track of students and the TA's only add to the interaction possibilities. For the first AP Eng lang class we had, it has already been in 10-11 so things could easily have changed - at the time there weren't TA's...There was editing of each other's papers which was a very good activity actually...We did that even in University when I was a student....It helps the student understand the process better...
  5. AP Human Geo x 2 - first AP courses for each....I thought it was an excellent start to getting up to speed with a good mix of textbooks and online and writing. Both dc had had an online writing class with Rebekah (Laurel Tree) previously but that doesn't have an external exam so this one was more serious. AP Eng Lang - one with Maya the other with a different teacher and overall I thought Maya better... AP Physics B (no longer exists but Mr Lanctot does other Physics) - ds was happy with it and did well at uni... AP Chem - excellent preparation - students definitely have to keep up with their side of the equation and a fair number didn't... AP European HX - Harrison - lots of materials, well organized, provided a chat possibility towards the end for students who wanted or needed it...
  6. For Calc FRQ's there exists a list which gives the topics covered in each FRQ - so you can know which questions to use with the different chapters if you want to get them started earlier...Probably such a thing exists for other subjects...
  7. There are two codes they want.... 1. They want the "School" which is B & M, homeschool or umbrella (or perhaps another that I don't know?) They only fill this out once with ss#, etc (though the place is still there on each answer sheet if I understand correctly. 2. The online provider code - In a separate space which they fill out for each answer sheet (for each test you have a separate answer sheet) - you can place the online provider code (3 digits). (optional - PAHS also has an accredited high school diploma program - completely separate from their online classes. For people using this program - you have to be a PA resident - you would put their "school" code (6 digits). It's possible to find these forms (they change a bit over the years) and practice on them at home... ETA I forgot to answer your question. When you add the provider code, I believe they then get a copy of your grade and so have a better tally.
  8. If you use an umbrella school, you should use their code....as it shows up on the scores...
  9. Dd is exhausted and so glad she doesn't have two exams on one day (would that even be possible). Calc went well...
  10. Well, admin wrote back and said that the teacher didn't think dd was writing darkly enough. Dd says they discussed this and she changed pencils from HB to B...but that the invigilator :-) stood there a lot anyway. I guess she was very concerned...Which is a good thing... (Now my concern with another dc would have been being able to read his writing but that's another matter) Admin says that in her assessment, it is dark enough for the correctors.... At least there is an explanation, and another thing that's good to know...
  11. Yes it's good it didn't rattle her! Sounds like terrible conditions...
  12. That seems like something to tell the proctor...but I guess the timed aspect of the sessions makes one not want to have any perturbations....But then maybe students don't think of speaking up and saying something to the proctor either...
  13. I don't remember seeing such info before ? Anyway, I sure wish I would have known this last year as dd's foreign language AP was really bungled due to computer problems and it only affected her recording (the other students weren't affected)....So I changed the title of the thread to catch others' attention... Dd says she doesn't know if the proctor did the same with other students as she didn't watch... Well, just discussed and dd says she doesn't want to risk her grade being cancelled (she found that somewhere on the website I think)....that it was irritating but not that big a deal...Yes, here, we need the scores to get in...it doesn't matter as long as its passing...So I think we won't take it farther than the admin and I've instructed her to say something to the proctor if it happens again tomorrow... Thank you!!
  14. (Just edited the title because of MtnTeaching's post it's so important) So dd did her first test today and felt it went well. She did complain about the proctor who I think didn't have enough students to supervise (only 4 - Chem) and would come back and stand and watch dd work. It drives me to distraction if someone is looking over my shoulder while playing a game - eg Ruzzle and she says it distracted her. It kept happening again and again. Since she felt it went well overall, I don't think I'll say anything to the CB but I did email the school admin. But was I wrong - it it common to do that? She hasn't had it happen in previous years...
  15. Another problem we ran into with "other language - in this case French" textbooks is the "teacher dependency" that they have.... At first I just thought it was the European approach to languages...but now I've seen it in other subjects as well...esp here in CH...where the math books for the lower grades would be hopeless in a homeschool setting where typically the student needs to be able to 'self-teach' some subjects at least by having texts which explain everything. (I don't have anything against parental involvement in a subject, only realize that there are certain time constraints for many families)..... Another problem is "history"....in that typically the history text is very focused on the history of the country...So if you use French history books, there is thankfully a good dose of world history at the beginning, but by the modern times, it is much more French history, but little American history and of course Vice versa...This can be fascinating to be using "both" texts where you see the different national perspectives of historical events :-)...but you would then need to be reading texts in both languages and it would not strictly be a French history class.
  16. There are different kinds of "chips". The kind that's been used for years over here is not the same as the "Tap and pay" type.... And believe me, if you travel in Europe it is much better to have the "chip" kind (eg some gas station machines don't have magnetic strip readers - and I almost got stuck one night) Here's a bit about the Tap kind: Q: Is this the same technology that's featured on a PayPassTM Card? Can I use my Chip Card to Tap and GoTM? A: No. MasterCard® PayPassTM uses a different technology called RFID (radio frequency identification), which uses near-field communications to transmit your transaction - so you can pay by tap and go. Your Chip Card will need to be read by a device before you sign for your purchase. You can continue to swipe your card when making domestic purchases in the U.S. However, if your credit card already has PayPass functionality, you can still use it to tap and go. Q: Chip Card, EMV card, smart Chip card...what's the difference? A: These are all just different terms for the same technology. The technology used in these credit cards is commonly known as being EMV-enabled, which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, which uphold the chip technology. These cards are a global standard for processing credit and debit card payments. Various credit card companies may refer to Chip Cards slightly differently, but they all function to help keep your card more secure. from this site: https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/template.do?ID=chip-technology-questions
  17. We took BL titles from SWB's Well Trained Mind reading list which has novels, poetry, and plays.
  18. We did it similarly for the course which hadn't been modified recently...but with some differences. For the longstanding course: Ds chose the textbook - from several which were well regarded in this forum - yes, I bought them just in case and some we have used more than others to supplement and sometimes find info not given in the main one. Googled syllabi which corresponded with that book and downloaded the AP sample syllabi... From the Googled ones, found one which had a timeframe I wanted...but saved the others for extra activities Compared them all and came up with a plan that met all the various "required" aspects. Slotted in the extra pieces, wrote up goals, etc. I didn't include FRQ's in the syllabus but gave them during the appropriate chapters anyway and did include a long review period. For the newly changed AP: there were almost no books that went with it...so it was much harder and I couldn't find sample syllabi except for the ones on the CB website....It was really hard to develop and I included way too many activities for the time. Thankfully the acceptance letter notes: "you may need to modify or adapt your syllabus or course plan to address the needs of your students, reflect new discoveries, and try out new approaches" SO you don't need to resubmit as long as: "you are not changing your course so significantly as to eliminate from your curriculum one or more of the curricular requirements located" on their site. 19. We're finishing up with American Lit and I wanted to do a comparison of the major themes in different literature. I realize that World Lit will be be full of overlap with the others since we're all humans. In spite of that, there are some worthwhile differences to note and some of my columns are either too full (British where I can find themes for every period of British Literature and French) or too empty (German since I have no familiarity). So I'm wondering if anyone has some well thought through lists for the British, French and German Themes? What I like about short lists is that they can give a quick feel for predominating concerns... I'll include what I have for American and World Lit so far (feel free to correct those too :-)) American Literature Themes: 1. The Search for Identity 2. Moral Struggle 3. Individualism 4. The Frontier 5. The Journey 6. Initiation 7. The American Dream From United States Literature by Scott Foresman World Literature Themes 1. The Question of Truth 2. The Nature of Justice 3. The Meaning of Greatness 4. Fate and Free Will 5. Man and Nature 6. Good and Evil 7. Love and Hate 8. The Question of Identity From Themes in World LIterature by Elliott The following types of lists are so long and so exchangeable that it doesn't give that much cultural perception...I'm looking for roughly 8 per culture... 101 Common Book Themes French Themes Thanks! 20. You probably won't believe that I'm still agonizing over this - today's the last day to apply and dd has one more app to finish. Anyway, for this one, at first I thought it sufficient to just show she would have the same exams to apply to a similar school. But as I kept rereading the directions inside the application (they don't divulge everything on the public pages), it seemed like they were insisting that a student should have proof.... So then I thought, well, if there are US unis which do admit, why don't I just explain that, and show her SAT scores which would show that she could be admitted to more than just the easiest schools.....as then she would fall into the category of not needing to supply proof :-) So a special thank you to all who helped me understand the possibilities! ETD
  21. I asked dd if she thought it's possible to do without a regular course first and she said yes...that they covered everything she'd done before in just a few weeks....
  22. Hi again, dd is taking the course with PAH and the teacher makes up his own questions to simulate the new AP so that's a good thing! Lots of students aren't keeping up with their homework it seems.... FWIW - dd did the Georgia Public Broadcasting free Chem course with no book but by the end she couldn't stand it - she felt it was talking down to her so much....ds3 managed to get thru the Physics GPB but used Apologia Physics as his mainstay and just used the GPB for concepts where he wanted a bit more explanation.
  23. A while ago I started a thread asking if coursework for Economics had changed after 2008.... We ended up using a Swiss economics book which I think had a more balanced approach (sorry it's in French and it's also for a much more manageable situation - ie not as complex in some ways as the US - but the Swiss do have difficulties with having such a desirable currency - did you know they're offering negative interest now?) I just read an interesting definition of "private" property on Wikipedia...I'm sure that differences in the definition of such are completely confusing many individuals....
  24. This is fascinating because just googled him and found this quote - "Chesterton's Distributism is centered on the idea that to end state socialism and prevent capitalist monopolies there must be a predominance of small ownership." from The American Chesterton Society I was just in the UK and the number of small shops in London is impressive! Now I wasn't in the countryside nor in 'malls' so my anecdotal sample is limited...Still compared to what I have seen elsewhere, there does seem to be a higher number. Also in conversing with a local there about why so many people would prefer to immigrate to the UK vs other European countries (though of course there are lots of applications in other countries as well), he said he thought it was because "anyone who really wants to work will find a job" and that the country is more open to entrepreneurs or something like that...
  25. Well actually, for this program it is a stem school :-) so I was comparing Tech schools. She's gone all over the place with her applications once she couldn't do the one program, going in completely different directions and will decide once she has all the real options in hand. Like one program she already dismissed because she heard that it was full of "sharks" :-).
