  1. My two daughters will be 11th & 12th graders next year. My in-laws have a business that I worked at before kids, so today they had me take a look at their QuickBooks records. After that I started looking for courses that I could take to learn the software. That got us to thinking that I could have the girls do a course also. Does anyone have a QuickBooks course that they recommend? I found one specifically for homeschoolers at southernmomflair.com but thought I'd ask here also. Thanks in advance.

I’ve heard BJU Spanish is difficult to teach without a Spanish background. We used Breaking the Spanish Barrier and were happy with it’s clear explanations. Although I do know some basic Spanish, my daughter didn’t know any and went through the book on her own with only a question here or there.

Mi Vida Loca on BBC is a fun addition to get some listening skills along with the grammar that a test will provide.

We used Breaking the Barrier Spanish too and it worked well for us.  My dd also did an hour a week conversation class with a Spanish speaker locally.

Thank you both for the Breaking the Barrier recommendation. I’ve never heard of it, so I will look it up.

My daughter has used BJU Spanish 1 online (Distance Learning) in connection with a weekly live tutorial class.  The class didn't require the DLO class, but I'd already bought it.  I think the DLO class helped her a lot actually.  I don't think the live class was nearly enough instruction.  It would be impossible to teach unless you knew Spanish yourself.  The textbook moves quickly to being all in Spanish, and the TM has very little along the lines of "How to Teach" (from the digital copy on my BJU account).  My dd has done some of the online exercises and assignments, but mostly watched the videos to supplement her 1 hour weekly tutorial.  She feels like the DLO class in itself might not be enough to get all she needed, but to be fair she never did that except for the last chapter that her live class didn't cover.  This year she's taking Spanish 2 through HSLDA (they also use BJU).  Veritas Press also has an online class using BJU (and their registration is still open), but I realize you said you didn't want a live class.  The good thing about the BJU DLO is it spells out day by day exactly what you need to do, and it includes listening exercises as well as written.  I'd recommend making sure you, the parent, grade every single assignment (this is my downfall with using BJU classes --I quickly get behind).  I think it could definitely work to do the self-paced BJU DLO as long as the student is diligent to do the work and the parent is diligent in keeping accountability and grading.  The quizzes and tests are all online and automatically graded; I'm referring to the exercises that have to be graded (or activity manual assignments).  Also, I think it would be very helpful to have someone to speak Spanish with on a regular basis if possible.  I have 2 friends that were high school Spanish teachers that my daughter has been able to occasionally speak with.  Hope that helps.

Thank you. It helps to read about other’s experiences with it. I did hear about a local homeschool mom who teaches Spanish at the community college, & she is available for tutoring. ?

    Thanks so much everyone!

  3. My 10th grade daughter is taking Spanish for her foreign language requirement. She is currently in her 2nd week of Spanish 1 lessons with Power Homeschool. I like the lady on the videos, but I’m afraid that my daughter isn’t going to learn enough since the videos are so short. I’m looking at other curriculum. This child has stated that she doesn’t want to do any “live” classes. She also doesn’t want to take Spanish with FL Virtual (even though her sister is taking French through there). There’s also the possibility of dual enrollment next year. After saying all that, what are other’s experiences with BJU? There’s a textbook with audio CD, or there’s the online or DVD option with a teacher’s videos.  Are there any other textbook options or recorded classes that y’all would recommend? We’ve homeschooled all along, but foreign language for this kid is making me crazy!

  4. This is me! I'm sitting here checking out the forums instead of checking the geometry work that is right beside me. When I finally check the work, I have to get my daughter to explain things to me.

I hate grading (or checking) geometry.

My empathy is all I can contribute.  It's one of the reasons I'll be doing a happy dance when this year is over:  my youngest will have finished geometry and is going to high school.

  5. Thank you cbollin. I loved reading the trivia! I won't go looking for that enhanced teacher's guide, but if I happen to see it at a used book sale, I'll give it a glance. I was also wondering about the price. I had looked at the curriculum a few weeks ago & saw that it was $100. When I was ready to order, I saw the $40 price & jumped on it!

  6. I just bought Jacobs Geometry (3rd edition) through My Father's World. In looking at the Cathy Duffy review website, I see a 3rd edition (with a different cover) enhanced teacher's guide. 1st question - Is this teacher's guide helpful/needed? I didn't take geometry in high school, so I will be studying this spring & summer before my daughter begins it next fall. 2nd question - If needed, would it work with the edition that I bought at MFW? Thanks for any feedback.

For my youngest (next year) we are planning:

    Asian History

    Asian Literature

    Art History

    Music History

Anatomy through Art (for science, basically studying anatomy to better draw not only the human body but some animals as well)

    Math

    Japanese

    Violin

    Art

She's very focused on Art and music and Asia. The Anatomy course is something I'm working on figuring out. Basically, it's to help her with drawing but we want to study the parts from skeleton out and how they move and work and all of that. She'll have to learn the vocabulary as well. But it's more for an art student than someone wanting to go into the medical field.

Do you have Asian history & literature curriculum that you're using? Both of my girls were adopted from Asia, so I think courses like this sound great!

  8. I picked up a instructor's copy of Lial & Hestwood's Prealgebra, 3rd edition, a student's solutions manual for the same edition, and a set of Digital Video Tutor CDs to accompany Lial & Hestwood's Prealgebra: An Integrated Approach.  There is an actual 5th edition of the Prealgebra book out now and that might be the edition for which you found a TOC online, but if you want we can try to compare mine to the book you have.  Is there a particular level of lesson you were wanting to compare?

I have not yet used my book.  We are going to start it this summer.

Sorry for the late reply.  We've been on vacation, & I just saw this. I ended up ordering the 3rd edition of just the prealgebra book, & it's coming tomorrow. I'll be able to see how the two books match up.  Thanks.

  9. I was able to pick up the 2nd edition of Lial's Prealgebra & Introductory Algebra (P&IA) at a used book sale.  I looked at the table of contents for her Prealgebra (P) book online, & they match up with the first half of the book that I just bought.  My question is do the lessons in the (P) book go into more detail than the (P&IA) book?  Is there a sample online somewhere of one of the (P) lessons that I can use for comparison? I'm looking to use this book next year for an 8th grader.  Thank you.

  10. I am currently trying to print out "Lesson Answer Key" for unit 1, lesson 3 of K12 intermediate world history. Cannot do it. After navigating a very lengthy voicemail system, I am on hold waiting for technical support. (have been waiting for 6 minutes so far.)

Update: I am on the phone with a technical support person now. Will let you know how it goes.

Update: It turns out I had my pop-ups disabled. So this was my fault. Oops!

I'm glad you got it to work.  This time of year can be a bit crazy sometimes with trying to log into the K12 system because of all the new students.  We had issues for about 20 minutes yesterday.  I just wanted to prepare you for that possibility.

Is your child doing part A or B of the intermediate world history?  My older daughter is on part A.  We began at the beginning of August & are on unit 3 now.  This is the 8th year for us to be using part of K12.  We've never used the teacher support.

  11. Can you explain the difference between "teacher supported" and "independent"? And what does it cost to use a course independently?

I'm not sure what the teacher supported class is like since we've only done the independent classes.  It costs $30/month or if you prepay for a year it's $238 - plus the books.

  12. My older DD just finished 6th grade K12 math.  She did really good, but I'm pretty sure that my younger DD wouldn't get through it as easy next year.  I'm definitely looking for a different curriculum for her.  I realize that 6th grade is junior high, but it seems like there was a giant leap between 5th & 6th grade.  I hope you're able to find something that works for your daughter.

  13. We are moving to Tampa (actually Brandon) and I need to know where I can find some good homeschool groups. Does anyone know of coops or social groups, or other support groups for homeschoolers so I can get a head start on getting involved?

I would prefer a Christian group, and one that had academics, too, but any group will be a good start.

    Thanks!!

We're moving to Brandon too! Where are you moving from? We're moving from Texas, but we lived over in Pinellas county Florida 6 years ago. My girls are 10 & almost 9. Hopefully I'll run into you at some point! :)
