  1. I spray all armpits with Simple Green before they go into the wash. A little trick I picked up from my MIL.
  2. Bed bugs can do the same thing. However, I hope you don't have bed bugs!! Fleas or spiders would be much easier.
  3. 3 mile recovery run. Felt good. I hope your hamstring feels better. Mine was tight after Crossfit on Friday, but felt much better today after using a foam roller after my long run last night.
  4. I don't know, but I would run it. 5K is a short race and many women run well into pg.
  5. I haven't really gotten any negative comments. I thought my parents would take our decision to hs as a comment on their parenting, but they haven't. They became very supportive after there was a shooting at my high school. There are a couple who think we're crazy since our schools are "good," but they aren't negative. We have a large homeschool community and many of my friends are now hs'ing (after removing dc from ps) that we don't stick out so much anymore.
  6. I was able to get my 8 mile run in. The weather was TERRIBLE! The humidity was 90% and the sun was beating down on us...but we did it. So happy it's done and my times were decent. :hurray: I've never done P90X, but heard a lot of great Thngs about it from friends who've done it. Congrats!
  7. Trying to get an 8-mile run in today, but the weather is not cooperating. Hopefully tonight.
  8. I buy most in March and April because we start our schoolyear in June. However, I've started buying new levels when I need them. We tend to roll onto the next level as we finish. Just this week ds8 started a new FLL and math books.
  9. My oldest did that too. He could read just fine, but needed fluency practice and would overthink CVC words. Once he became a voracious reader, that went away and he increased three grade levels in three months. That was at the end of K right when he turned 6 or slightly before.
  10. I'll be listening. Ds8 doesn't like dictation much either, but hasn't struggled much with it YET. I'll probably take it slow with him since he loves to write letters and journal entries. I wouldn't want to kill that.
  11. I haven't read all of the replies: Dh and I each get a "mad money" allowance each month. That money is to spend on whatever we want. Both of us usually save it up until we really want something. Neither one of us is a spender. I answered 0-5 even though I could spend more than that if I wanted to do so.
  12. Ah...got it. That does make sense. Maybe thinking about those benefits will get me up and going next time I feel a bit crummy. When I have a stuffy nose, a good run does help me feel better for some of the day now that I think about it. I get very minor sore throats a lot (I think it is an allergy symptom) so they don't tend to slow me down. I hope you feel better soon!
  13. Did you do WWE2 and WWE3? Just curious since your ds is the same age as mine according to your siggy and the progression between the levels has really helped him. He is just starting WWE3 and has not struggled with any of the leaps in ability that the program requires. I haven't seen WWE4 yet since we'll do that next year.
  14. Does it? I thought that wearing down the body by working out when you're sick could cause you to take longer to get healthy. Doesn't the body need to devote its energy to healing? Now, I don't take time off for the sniffles or a mildly sore throat, but I would for a more severe cold or strep throat. I might still walk or do some easy yoga, but nothing taxing. Hmmm...have I just been making excuses all these years?:tongue_smilie: I've been a little afraid of getting sick during my training periods because of the setback. Thankfully, we've all been healthy. My shoulder feels much better this morning (probably 95%) and I'm finally seeing results on the scale again. We'll see what Crossift has in store today...
  15. I'm finally back in the swing of things after taking last Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday off from running. Tuesday: Crossfit...I was really happy with my performance, but my right shoulder is really sore (not injured, just SUPER sore). Today: 4 mile run. Tomorrow: Crossfit Saturday: 8 mile run Sunday: 3 mile recovery run (SLLLOOOWWW) I need to get out of the habit of back-loading my weeks. Next week's goal is to get up early Monday morning to run. So hard to do for me after the weekend.
  16. <Like> I've also been experiencing many benefits from making working out a priority this last 5-6 weeks. I have more energy and my brain is working better. The trick for me is to remember that I don't have time to skip working out after my half marathon training is over like I did last year. Maybe I should print out your post and put it on my nightstand. :001_smile:
  17. I am an AFA grad (and Dh is WP...we were both officers) and whole-heatedly agree with this sentiment. I had a lot of enlisted personnel that I worked with who were doing some amazing things. I was intelligence and worked both in Space Command and with aircraft at different times in my career. These guys and gals were knowledgeable and fully marketable (usually with degrees) by the time they were leaving the service. Although I loved being an officer, I would completely support any of my boys who wanted to enlist. Many of my airman were able to work on their degrees and gain a lot of maturity even when serving only 4-6 yrs. Now, I did have a couple for whom it did not work out. It wasn't necessarily discipline issues, but more of a personality conflict with the authority and lifestyle. Joanne, I would definitely have him check out each branch thoroughly. Being AF and married to an Army guy, I saw how different those two branches were. It was surprising how different my job was compared to my counterpart in the Army. It wasn't because of the different missions per se, but that they have a completely different structure and use of manpower. Jobs can also make a huge difference as others have said. My sis is still in the AF, but her experience has been very different from mine as she is on the support side of things (contracting) instead of operations. Having someone who understands the lingo and structure can help a lot. I didn't go through a recruiter, but I've heard some crazy stories.
  18. Like others said, you will miss out on things either way you go. My dc would have missed out on learning Latin or doing their math next to their lizard's terrarium if they went to public school. There's always a trade off. About teaching the months. Even if it isn't included in your curriculum, you wouldn't forget. You would remember when your dc need/want to know it. They'll ask, "Mom, how many months until Christmas?" or "When are we going to see Grandma and Grandpa again?" There are easily found poems and songs to teach it on children's CDs or the Internet. I've never heard it to the Macarena. That's cool. Our favorite preschool take away is the days of the week to the Addam's Family theme song tune. I do like First Language Lessons because it does remind me to do this kind of stuff (months, days of the week, address, phone number, etc.), but I think it would be tough to forget those things all together. Many math programs include some of those topics too. Plus Roman numerals...who'd remember to teach that? FWIW, our church has a Roman Numeral analog clock and my dc love that they can tell time on it :D.
  19. My ds6 would consider SSL, Miquon math, Geography songs, Noeo science, and Sonlight fun. I also added in logic for him this year. He likes it, but not as much as Latin. We also do Mighty Mind Super Challenger some days.
  20. Although we use Singapore instead of MM, ds8 naturally does it the way it is presented in the OP. I guess it makes more sense in his head. I also developed that method even though I was never taught to do mental math. The SM method seems to work better for ds6, but I'm teaching him both. To the OP, it becomes quite natural and not complicated with practice. It is also applicable to do mental math with larger numbers. I wish I'd been taught that way from the beginning. Ds8 is much faster with mental math than I am.
  21. This happened just this morning in CWP4. The problem said three times as much, but he multiplied by 2 on accident and got the wrong answer. It was easy to see the problem and correct it through all 4 parts of the problem since he had clearly written out his work I do agree that units are also very important. My dc laugh when I make up my own units. "So Gerald had 18 more tigers?, or rotten eggs? Oh, dollars that makes more sense." It gets the point across.
  22. :grouphug::grouphug: I hope you are able to relax a bit with that glass of wine.
  23. I loved living in NC so that would be my pick. NC is beautiful and it was so easy to get to different places on the East Coast so traveling was great. We went everywhere from NY to Orlando while we lived there. There are also great hs communities there. My best friend lives there so I might be a bit biased. My sis is a Disney fanatic so she'd pick Orlando everytime.
  24. I think you are right. Unfortunately, it is very hard to unsay things these days.
  25. Yes, I pronounce the T in the first words, but say "Kindergarden.". I was born and raised in rural Oregon (Orygun...not Ore ee gon). ETA: I also pronounce the Ls in palm and almond. I have never heard anyone say foh-red in my life. I pronounce it like the compound word it is: fore-head. I was in the military so I'd thought I'd been exposed to a lot of speech patterns, but maybe not as many as I thought. One of my best friends in college was from rural South Carolina and we almost spoke different languages.
