  1. I know this is an old post, but I want to warn anyone else thinking about this program. We only tried it for a couple of weeks & it was just not quite what we were looking for, so stopped using it. Apparently when you register, you are actually setting up an automatic renewal. I didn't realize this, so when the charge showed up on my credit card a year later, I e-mailed to cancel my subscription. I got no response & have written 3 more times - still no response. This is terrible customer service! Whether or not they would reverse the new charge since we haven't used the account in almost a year, they should at least respond to my request to cancel it! :cursing: So I don't know if you can still use the documents after the subscription runs out, because I don't know how to end a subscription...
  2. We have a similar dilemma here... It looks like there is no fee to cancel a score, but you need to send in a form by June 15th. There is no going back on this - it sounds like it get completely deleted from their system. There is also an option to withhold a score from being sent to a college. This does have a fee, but the score will stay on file.
  3. Ds just got results from his June 6 SAT & I was expecting more detailed results. I can see the copy of his essay & score, but don't see any feedback/pointers to help improve for next time. I remember paying an extra fee for additional feedback, but maybe this does not include the essay? Is it something that gets mailed later? Thanks!
  4. Have you used the Advanced Physics as preparation for an AP Physics exam? Which exam does it prepare for - there are 4 different AP exams? Did you find Apologia to be enough, or does it require supplements to be fully prepared? Thanks!
  5. Thank you! This is what I was thinking. The links will help when we go to try again... And yes, my biscuit was well-toasted when it dawned on me what was going on!
  6. What form (card color) does your child have for a working permit in NY? My son had a "blue card" AT-18 when he was 15, but needed a new one because he recently turned 16. We went to the school expecting to get the "green card" AT-19 for 16-17 year old students. They gave him an "orange card" AT-20 instead. She said this is because he is homeschooled & not a student at the school. The card says it is for "full-time employment of a minor" - I think this is actually for someone who has dropped out of school? Does anyone know which one a homeschooled student should actually have or if it makes any difference? Thanks! Kathy
  7. The price went way up on it & from the sample pages, it seems to be identical to the revised vol. 1. Am I missing something here?
  8. Thank you ladies - we will look into/consider all of your suggestions!
  9. I SO WISH we had discovered AoPS sooner! My son & I both really like the program from the descriptions & samples, but... According to their recommendations after Algebra 2, they suggest "Introduction to Counting & Probability" or "Introduction to Number Theory" - THEN "Intermediate Algebra" - THEN either "Intermediate Counting & Probability" or "Precalculus". From the size of the books, I am assuming each is a year-long course (?), and with just 2 yrs left he would be only doing Intermediate Algebra as a senior - probably not too impressive on a transcript. I'm beginning to think we should just use one of the Introduction books "for fun" and plug along with a regular boring text. :crying:
  10. Ds has completed Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 & 2, and Geometry with no problem at all. We have also done Life of Fred through Geometry. At this point could he jump into Art of Problem Solving Precalc? He did fine on the pretest, but it is difficult to tell from the sample pages what to expect. Will he be totally lost - not have the problem-solving skills needed? He did great with LoF, which requires more "thinking" than TT... Anyone started AoPS at this level? Thanks!
  11. Heading over to join that group - I had not heard of that one. Thanks!
  12. Do you recall what list you saw it on? Everything I see "looks" really great, but would love some first hand report.
  13. From what the Amplify rep said, it is free to watch the videos & do everything, but unless you register as a coach you don't have the tracking ability. A coach will also have access to additional materials. If ds does go ahead with the course, I will probably pay the $85. It does seem fairly inexpensive for a strong AP prep & from the videos it looks to be worth it (though free would be better !) I just was hoping that all of the students who took the test this year didn't bomb it because they were unprepared. :scared:
  14. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with this online course, and how they did on the AP Computer Science test after finishing the course. My son wants to start it this fall, but it is $85 plus the cost of taking the AP - I guess only the trial year was free. So I would love to hear any comments if you and/or you children participated. Thanks!
  15. This is kind of what I was starting to think for this year. Then when he goes ahead with pre-calc & calculus next year or the following year, I would add the ACE designation right from the start (on the IHIP) and assume that he will pass the ALEKS assessment.
  16. Do you put "ACE" in the class name, or does this not really matter at this point? Perhaps I am making this harder than it needs to be. I am new to the whole preparing for college/transcript situation, and want to do what will work best in the long run... Thanks!
  17. For our IHIP, quarterly reports & report cards this year I have put Algebra 2 for DS (doing TT Alg 2). He just passed the Intermediate Algebra course through ALEKS and was approved through ACE Credit. How do I show this on the report card for the last quarter? I don't think I can just change the course name to "ACE Intermediate Algebra" now, but don't think it would look right to add a 2nd math course either... Do I just write it in the quarterly report & not show it on the actual report card? How have you handled this? Thanks! Kathy
  18. This is also my suggestion if they accept ACE - certainly the least expensive, plus you can do it all from home.
  19. My ds has done all 4 TeenCoder books & never did the KidCoders. I would say you could start with either TeenCoder set, since they are different programming languages & both start at the beginning. Just be aware that they work in sets so TC Windows needs to be done before TC Games, and TC Java needs to be done before TC Android.
  20. My ds is signed up for this online AP Computer Science class in the fall: https://users-mooc.amplify.com/learn.html You can watch some videos from this year's class: https://course-mooc.amplify.com/ He has already had some Visual Basic, C++, and JAVA, but the course says you don't need any programming experience.
  21. Sonlight has a nice overview of Secret of Great Communicators on their website: http://www.sonlight.com/CR101D.html
  22. We have not done it yet, but plan to use Secrets of the Great Communicators. It uses DVD instruction and includes some biographies of great communicators. It sounds like there are only a few lessons where you will need to find an audience to present to.
  23. Wow!! Thank you all for these great ideas! I was worried we would not be able to find something interesting to fulfill this requirement - now I I'm worried that we may not be able to narrow it down to 1 or 2! Thanks so much!!
  24. I had considered Geography, but was not sure how to get 54 hours without turning it into just a memorization time - what did you use for this? Global Current Events does sound interesting as well! Did you have a basic resource for this, or did you spend a lot of time gathering information? I feel think I would need at least a basic text as a jumping-off point, or I would just not get it going. Thank you!
  25. We need to have 4 Social Studies credits to fulfill NY state requirements. We have done US History, 20th World History, will be doing US Government/Civics next year (either 1/2 or 1 credit, depending on what else we come up with), and need 1/2 credit in Economics. So we are left with 1/2 or 1 full credit left to plan for. What other courses have you done to count as SS credit? I am thinking maybe Psychology..., but would love to hear what other options have worked well for you family. Thanks!
