  1. I just printed mine and am so excited to use this with my girls 2nd and 4th this year. Has anyone that has used this before tell me what kind of schedule you use? I would like to use it twice a week and wondering how much per day I would need to do and if I can finish it in a year or if I should stretch it into two years. Thanks!
  2. From what I understand, though we are not there yet. YES!
  3. I can't believe there are so many programs out there!!! My brain is spinning!!!
  4. I have done the Classical Phonics and First Start Reading they were FABULOUS!!! haven't used any of the upper grades.
  5. Thank you. Lively Latin looks really fun. I just found this under their FAQ's "Completing BB1 and BB2 is roughly equivalent to 1 year of high school Latin." That's interesting. I think it would be a nice springboard to the highschool latin courses later
  6. Yes, Memoria does drag things out... but I like some of the things we have used, and the prices are pretty reasonable. What is GSWL?
  7. I am open. I really enjoy Memoria Press, but any other suggestions would be fine. I want something that isn't super teacher intensive I have 3 little girls under the age of 7... and something my son can do independently with maybe just a few minutes of instruction from me each week. Oh and price is a factor too :) Thanks
  8. So I am just now realizing we want to do Latin with my 8th grader. But where to start? On Memoria Press it says Henle is for the upper grades but advanced and you needed to do Latina Christiana or First Form latin first. Then First Form latin says to do latina Christiana first which is geared to the younger grades. Where do I begin??? When he will be in highschool one year from now I really can't start with an elementary Latin and move on from there, he would never finish. Any ideas?
  9. Thanks for the detailed response. Since most everything is done at home and the majority of it is to get the kids together to learn/ discuss, use their brains etc... is that really worth the $$$$ spent? Along with having to purchase all the curriculum at home too? Maybe a separate club or science lab class would be best???
  10. Okay, so we are very Charlotte Masony here. I despise textbooks and rigorous academics. My kids learn alot but we are very natural about how we do it. Now, that being said, my son is adamant that he wants to become a doctor. He is 13. He also struggles with spelling, writing and Math. I can't even begin to imagine what I need to do to prepare him for college. Then I heard about the Challenge program. I am thinking that it would be the best thing to help prepare him for a very rigorous college education, but it freaks me out and kindave makes me sick to my stomach, because it is so against the grain of what our family does. My husband thinks it may help him to focus better and do better in school, which I agree with to a point, but I don't want school to be a chore and something he hates. I want my kids to love to learn and not despise it... So... for those in the highschool challenges, how long does it take your kids to do all their school work each day? Does it take longer for assignments or are those included in the school day? I want there to be room for free exploration and learning for him. I don't want him to be doing academic stuff constantly...I will continue on with Charlotte Mason education for all my girls, but he is the only boy and the oldest and I feel so responsible to make sure he has a strong education to be able to support a family. (he wants a large family :)and especially if he wants to go into medicine. How flexible is the program? Is there room for me to be able to throw in other CM methods and teaching through out the week? Can we do extra things each week or is all the work for the challenge program going to be a big enough load on it's own? Another question with the Math... we do Teaching textbooks, but he has even been struggling with that this year. Saxon seems like major overkill, but that could just be my own opinion...I also think Apologia is dry and super textbook, but I think the labs would be great for him, though I prefer living books and kitchen table and backyard experiments. Maybe I just need to change my whole attitude and embrace the fact that if he is going to college we need to get over it and get used to the textbook aspect... Thanks for letting me ramble... any insight is so greatly appreciated!!! I am kindave a nervous wreck right now... if we decide to go this route for highschool then this year 8th grade, I really need to work with him at home to prepare him for the challenge program.
  11. LOL Didn't read all of this but I remember growing up in church chewing gum was the thing to do. Everyone's moms always had gum or mints in their purses to give to the kids during service. It was like a special treat and always kept us quiet. I see nothing wrong with it unless you are blowing bubbles and smacking it all obnoxiously!
  12. Oh no! I was thinking of getting one for my daughter who does RS math and most workbooks freak her out. I have a friend who hated it too. I wanted to like it a lot of people seem to like it... I don't know...
  13. There are a few things I want to use specifically through the summer. Supplemental extras and Math of course. I plan on going with the days as well depending on VBS camps, mini vacations etc... What I am thinking is sleep in, breakfast, jammies and lounging and til 11am. Then an hour of school before lunch. Lunch, naptime for baby and another hour of school and some reading time. Rest of the day should be free after about 2pm. At least that's what I am hoping for! :)
  14. I am doing a review of this right now. It looks really good and not as overwhelming as other curriculums. I like how the history is done in one year.
  15. This is a GREAT deal on art dvds! Mike's Inspiration Station Art dvds. Buy one volume (6 dvds) that is already on sale for 20% off and get the second volume for FREE! Total cost $31.96 for 12 art dvds. This is an $80 value. I love art dvds, great busy fun for the kids and great for a mom who isn't that artsy! I'm going to split the cost with a friend and we will just share the dvds! http://www.heartsathomestore.com/affiliates/idevaffiliate.php?id=1021_4_1_12
  16. Are you allowed to post sales to really good deals on curriculum? I wasn't sure if that was allowed or not...
  17. Only a few times. When he found out his dad had cancer, when he thought his brother had a disease, and most recently since he has been taking trips to Haiti for our disaster relief ministry and when he came home from administering aid in Joplin, MO. He is a critical care paramedic and has a pretty tough skin, but when he talks about the people of Haiti, or tells stories of those who have shared with him about losing everything he always tears up.
  18. how do you guys like it? I've been thinking about trying it to supplement with right start.
  19. We are pretty relaxed here. Do Memoria press phonics and lots of reading and ETC that with handwriting takes about 30-45 minutes depending on how my struggling reader is handling the reading that day. Math we use Right start and take about 15 minutes. once a week we do a lapbook. We don't do any formal history and science is nature projects or she listens in on my 7th grader's science stuff and helps with experiments. We do a CM style co-op on Tuesdays. We school about 4 days a week no longer than 2 hours a day...
  20. Hello! We are really trying to adopt more CM type of lessons, nature studies etc... we are in a great co-op that does this each week, but I would love to try one of the science books for something my son can use on his own doing research etc... So I was looking and trying to figure out what to use. I was looking at the Parables of Nature one and it says can be used through Jr. High. He is in 7th (we would be starting it this summer and he will be finishing next year in 8th grade. Would this be too easy for him or should I just bump it up a level to the highschool science ones that they just came out with or save those for highschool? Also, would this be too girly? Has anyone used this with a boy before? Thank you for your time! :)
  21. We love Barry Stebbing by How Great thou Art. His nature journal dvd is so nice. My 7 and 12 year old both love it. We have also used draw right now, but they loved the dvds better! http://www.howgreatthouart.com/
