  1. Instead of a full blown on-line highschool, how about mixing in a few different options--on a class by class basis. For example, there are great online writing programs(Write@home, and Home2teach to name a few). For science and foreign language, Bob Jones DVD's have been a huge lifesaver for me. Potter's School also offers a full array of academic classes and electives. I know exactly how you feel in needing more help for highschool---the help is there...and by looking at each subject individually, you will have more freedom to craft your own curriculum than you would at an online school. Good Luck!
  2. Math: Algebra 1 (Chalkdust) English: Composition(outside class) SAT Vocabulary words Hake Grammar Various books &study guides for Literature Science: BJU DVD Physical Science World Geograpghy (Potter's School) Spanish 1 BJU DVD's Total Health Total credits: 6 extra: piano, ballroom dance, art, drama
  3. Has anyone actually used this book and liked it? My ds has done Saxon Algebra I, Chalkdust Geometry, and is currently using Saxon Algebra II. He is flying through math with no problems at all. I figure he is one of those students that Saxon works well for. My fear, however, is the next book. I have seen a few people here whose dc did well with Saxon until they got to the Advanced Math book. Then, they hit the wall. I am really stuck about whether to plow ahead with Saxon or bail and find something else. Any insights that could help me choose would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  4. I am using Bob Jones DVD's for Biology. I have also used BJU DVD's for Physical Science. I plan on using Chemisty next year as well. I love the DVD option because I am not a science person and having a "teacher" teach this subject for me 180 days a year is wonderful!
  5. I use two different programs--one for each dc. Saxon Algebra II for my ds;Chalkdust Algebra I for my dd. Too bad you can't vote for two:)
  6. Finished: Know Why You Believe, by Paul E. Little. I think I will read an Albert Marrin book next.
  7. Well, one VERY positive review of Apologia comes from the lady on this board(I don't remember her name), whose son was just accepted to MIT! Her son used the Apologia texts. He did use both books(regular and advanced) in one year. He aced the AP exams! I think this is wonderful news for those who like Apologia, but fear it isn't as good as secular texts.
  8. I am considering this program as well for next year. Will you do both volumes in one year?
  9. Thanks so much for the replies! I'm not at all sure what to do. I was leaning towards, A Patriot's History, the William Bennett Text, or BJU(possibly with the DVD's). Reading both the the pros and cons of the BJU, the pros sound great and the cons don't sound all that bad considering my dc are "just the facts" types when it comes to history and don't mind textbooks. Hmmm....more thinking to do:)
  10. If you don't have it already the Mad Gab game is a lot of fun for all ages. Yes! Also, Catch Phrase is a blast too!
  11. I have the IKEA white squarish plates. They have chipped quite a bit around the edges from the kids roughly stacking them in the cabinet. I love all white dishes and am considering all white Corelle dishes.
  12. I'll give this a try...but I must say, you ladies must be some fast readers and I must be slow poke:) The thought of getting through a large novel (500+pages) in a week is hard for me to fathom. I guess I'll have to choose short books :)
  13. Thanks for your reply! I have some questions about the Lit class. Are there a lot of writing assignments included? Are the writing assignments througout both semesters grammar and lit? Also, how is the grammar component? Would it be too much to add additonal american lit novels on your own? Thanks so much! I hope I am not bombarding you with too many questions:)
  14. I need some info on the following courses: Chemisty, American Lit, and Spanish 2. I want to know if you are pleased with the courses...i.e..are they interesting, rigorous, well-planned. I am using Biology and Spanish 1 now, and am pleased with them, although the amount of chit -chat in Spanish 1 drives me crazy:). I have also used Physical Science, and was very pleased with that. Just wondering if I can expect the same thing with these courses as well. Thank you so much!
  15. My ds is in his second year and he just finished finals today. He thinks he did very well. Luckily, he is pretty close to home(45 minutes away in Atlanta) so getting home for Christmas will be easy. All in all , it has been a great semester for him.
  16. For those of you who will use this next year, will you do both volumes in 1 year ?
  17. My ds, 15, just finished The Great Train Robbery and enjoyed it. What would you recommend as his next Chriton book to read? Thanks!
  18. We just finished The Good Earth by Pearl Buck about a month ago and really enjoyed it. Till We Have Faces, by C.S. Lewis is also good!
  19. We did the DVD's for Physical Science last year and we loved Mr. Harmon! I did not feel it was outdated at all, except for his suggestion to buy a balance. My oldest son is at GA Tech, and they do NOT use those types of balances anymore! But--the content of the course was complete, rigorous, and my two ds learned a lot! This year, we are using the DVD's for biology and I like those as well.
  20. If you don't mind a Christian publisher, how about Bob Jones Chemistry with the DVD teacher. We have used physical science with Mr. Harmon(he teaches the chemistry as well). He is awesome! We are currently using the biology DVD course. It is so nice popping the DVD's in and having a "teacher" right in our living room 180 days a year--especially in a subject that is NOT my expertise:)
  21. One would assume that my dh and I are both traditional and Christian(We are). However, my dd's name (Mary) would make one assume that we are Catholic, which we are not.
  22. the BJU Biology DVD course. It is as hand- holding as it gets, with a teacher teaching 45 minutes, 5 days per week, 180 days per year. It's like being in school in our living room. I love it and couldn't imagine teaching biology without this kind of support.
