  1. I read Blackwood Relic by Andrea Pearson. It's a short story, a redneck horror. It's very light on the horror (maybe a little creepy) and has a lot of humor. It's a fun, very quick read.
  2. It seems fitting that such an incredible scientists born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death would die on the 139th anniversary of Einstein's birth.
  3. Not all Kindle/Audible pairs give a discount for buying both. I think it's up to the publishers.
  4. Hundreds since they're all on my Kindle and I have a significant number of books in my to be read folder on there. I have 14 in my reading now folder for that matter. JK helped write the screenplay so I'm sure the movie will explain things. Trailers often are misleading anyway. I finished reading Birth of an Empire by Conn Iggulden. I pre-read it for Cameron for school. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It was a bit violent, but that was expected since it's historical fiction about Genghis Khan's life from when he was about 12 until he conquered/joined several tribes and became Genghis. It's the first of a series. I think I'll read the others (at least eventually).
  5. Well, good thing we had nice, wholesome songs like Push It and Me So Horny to distract us from Macarena
  6. I finished reading Temple of Flames by Andrea Pearson today. It comes out in a week or so. It's the third in the Koven Chronicles series. I think it's the best book she's written yet.
  7. Did she though? The other friend was busy and later it was figured out that was the time of the party, but when I decline invitations, I don't usually explain why I can't. I just say I can't do whatever at that time. The pictures are on Facebook for all to see so that tells me the party wasn't a big secret. It sounds to me more like it was simply a princess party and the parents decided to invite only girls. No intentional slight meant.
  8. It sounds like they only had girls there? If so, I know the sexism is silly, but it wasn't a slight against your son. I'm sorry, he's upset and has been rough. But you really do have to find a way to let it go for your own sake and because of your friendship with the other moms.
  9. I assure you, it didn't even occur to me that you could possibly be Kelli Johnson until you asked if I thought you were (and I still don't think you are). I simply responded to a post you made and then went on from there in a different paragraph to a completely different subject that had come up in the thread. I do that a lot. Kelli Johnson's comments have been removed. I guess Amazon agreed they were abuse.
  10. Nope, didn't figure it was you. I have literally no idea who it is, so I'm going with Katie's ex-midwife. I just said she was watching this thread because in her comment on Amazon she indicated she is.
  11. My experience with high school teachers is they sometimes do. My experience with college teachers is they definitely do not. Interesting... there are bullet points in the description of the book on Amazon. I found it odd that one of his bullet points in his response is that the book is free through Kindle Unlimited. Is he not aware that Kindle Unlimited costs money every month? Surely he realizes he gets paid for every Kindle Unlimited book that someone reads. He clearly is trying to sell his book. That bullet point puzzled me, too. Also, Kelli Johnson's comments have been reported for abuse. (And since apparently she is watching this thread, I thought she ought to know ;) )
  12. Yes. Until he brought that up, it never occurred to me that he or Mergath would assume it was referring to race. As my daughter said, "If he jumped right to saying it wasn't about race, it was about race." So, basically, they're claiming their kids were ready for college at 14 when in fact they were ready for high school. I go line by line with my 6th grader's essays. I do not go line by line with my 10th grader's essays. Oh, man, that is hilarious.
  13. I think her review should be rated as helpful, though, because of the response from the author. It is very not cool in the publishing world to attack someone who gives you a negative review. His response is actually the more helpful part of Mergath's review IMO.
  14. Ireland is a beautiful country and the people are so kind. We spent a month in Ireland in 2013 and my husband and I are getting ready to go back for a week or two probably before the end of the year. My MIL (the one from Northamptonshire) lives in the southwest of Ireland now. Could you substitute another book by her? She also uses the pen name Robert Galbraith. Under that name she writes the Comoran Strike books. I think they are PI/mystery/thriller type books. I'm currently working on finishing Fellowship of the Ring. I can see why people love Tolkien. His world-building is amazing. I'm pre-reading it for Cameron for school. I'll finish it today or tomorrow. I read India for Children by Shalu Sharma. I pre-read that for Adrian. It's packed with information on India. I learned quite a bit myself. I read A Night at the Animal Shelter by Mark J. Asher to the boys as a bedtime story. It was pretty much an attack on people who don't adopt pets from an animal shelter or leave animals at one. There were two instances of bad language. After reading it I went back and checked if it was really aimed at kids like I thought. It was. 8-12 was the range given. The story was cute, but the language and heavy-handed lecturing were really not appropriate.
  15. This isn't quite right. Ebooks can be and very much are put out by a publishing company. What you meant is if they weren't an *indie author* they'd have a publishing company muzzling them. I disagree. If the criticism is completely warranted, I WANT to know before I buy the book (or choose not to). If all the reviews are positive, that tells me nothing about the book, really. Negative reviews are extremely useful to book buyers. Sometimes I'll read a negative review and discount it because it's not something that matters to me (like a political ideology I disagree with), other times it'll tell me I shouldn't buy it because it is something that matters to me (like graphic sex or excessive foul language). If an author responds telling the reviewer they are wrong like this guy did, there's no way I'll read it. Authors need kind of a thick skin. I have had authors respond to negative reviews three or four times. None of them have been homeschoolers though.
  16. My MIL is from Northamptonshire. Thrapston to be exact. Most of her sisters still live there. I haven't been reading much. Only 14 books so far this year and none finished since February 18th. I've got a lot in process, but no motivation to finish them.
  17. I walk while I read (going around and around the bottom floor of the house). I also go on a PokeWalk (playing Pokemon Go) with my middle son most days.
  18. I'm so sorry. We've only had our turtle(s) for about a year and we are very attached. I hope we get 28 years with her. (We had two foster turtles, but Mercury died in December. I don't think Pluto is going to last much longer. Mercury just wouldn't grow and Pluto isn't growing much. Our original turtle, Venus, is a couple months older and she's growing like crazy so clearly something isn't quite right with Pluto and something was definitely wrong with Mercury.)
  19. It is rare, but it most definitely happens. My mom had trouble for months after taking Levaquin, but it resolved (much more common to have issues that resolve over time). I took Levaquin once for pneumonia. It was that or the hospital. My doctor cautioned me to take it in the morning with two full glasses of water and to drink 3-4 more glasses over the course of the rest of the day in order to prevent side effects. This was in 2011 I think it was. Most people I know who have taken that type of antibiotics have not been warned or given such instructions by their doctors.
  20. As long as you select most recent, you'll be getting all your friends' posts. You won't necessarily be getting posts from companies you've liked. The 25 people and comment so I show up thing is silly and not true.
  21. I personally know several with confirmed flu (all A type). My best friend works at a school and a couple days 1/5 of their students were out sick, several with confirmed flu.
  22. Numbers show it's one of the worst (unlikely worst ever though). That's not media hype. Hospitalizations and death for previously healthy people are up. The shot wasn't that good of a match for the worst flu of the season (30+% for prevention; excellent for making it not nearly as bad as for those who didn't get the shot). It's interesting, though. Every time we have a well-publicized bad flu year, people get more vigilant about hand-washing, hand sanitizer, staying home when sick, reducing the amount they are around people, etc. which all lead to reduced transmission of the flu.
  23. Wait and see if they are automatically reprocessed. It's ridiculous the number of claims that are denied initially for one reason or another. Trust me, the insurance billing people are very used to it.
  24. Google maps tells me Union Station in DC to White Sulphur Springs WV via Amtrak train is a 6 hour trip that includes 7 stops. Via a chartered Amtrak train, some time could be shaved off. Still the same number of crossings whether it's chartered or not, though. They weren't ending in Crozet. They were going to White Sulphur Springs WV. They had only gone part of the way when the accident occurred.
  25. I order my MIL's gifts from amazon.co.uk (she's in Ireland, but UK Amazon ships there no problem). The selection of stuff is pretty similar to Amazon in the US. I'd get the gift card for her from whatever the Amazon in her country is or the closest country.
