  1. We are finishing up Rod & Staff Math 8 and I have no idea what to use next year (for 8th grade). For those of you who finished this course, what did you use next and how did it work out? I really appreciate any responses! I don't even know if dd should do a pre algebra or algebra course.
  2. Thank you everyone for your suggestions! After much research, I decided to go with EIW level 8. I hope this is the right decision!
  3. We are now finishing up R&S 8 after doing 1-6 and part of 7. I just supplemented with a few Key to Algebra books with the gr 8 book to make it a stronger pre-algebra course. I highly recommend it for dc who are slower to average in math, but it would probably be frustrating for ones who are advanced. It's slow and steady pace really pays off in the end.
  4. I looked into Meaningful Composition and I'm confused about where to start. Any suggestions?
  5. I'll check out Beyond the Book Report- thanks for the link!
  6. I was thinking about Elegant Essay but many of the reviews I read scared me off. It seems like many people have trouble teaching it. Maybe I should put it back on my "maybe list". I was also thinking about Jensen's Fomat Writing but since it's for high school I'm concerned that it may be a little too advanced. Hmmmm.... what to do
  7. R&S math! We are just finishing up the 8th grade book (finished 1-6 and part of 7th), and I love how thoroughly each topic is covered with constant review of previous material. There is no skipping around from topic to topic like many other programs, so it's perfect for a non-mathy child.
  8. We are finishing up SICC-B for 7th, but I would like something other than IEW next year. Something that teaches the various kinds of essays and that would prepare dd for high school would be great. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  9. Do you know if this is easy to teach? I have read that BJU needed the DVD's - unless parent is really sciency.
  10. I really like these science books -we are finishing up the life series right now. I'm not just sure if it would be enough for 7th. Do you think that if I added in the Weather and Water book that it would be up to 7th grade level? I was considering these for earth science but have been really conflicted. What grade are you using it for?
  11. I haven't heard of this before. Thank you for the suggestion.
  12. I hear ya. I should be sleeping right now but I've been up for hours freaking out about science for upcoming 7th grader. Tomorrow it will probably be math.
  13. I second MCT Island level. What an awesome program!
  14. My dd has only had life sciences (her area of interest), so we HAVE to do Earth science next year (for 7th grade). Please suggest a good one for middle school (Christian based). I was looking at BJU, but at this point I think it will be too expensive for us. Apologia General had too much life science in the mix. I would appreciate any suggestions!
  15. I wish there was a scope and sequence on their website. I still don't' know what to order.
  16. I used the "Handwriting Skills Simplified" workbooks by Essential Learning Products. I like that they teach the Zaner-Bloser script. They worked well and are cheap!
  17. We are finishing up the Town level and I'm not sure what level to do next school year (7th grade). I heard that Voyage grammar doesn't really have anything new so I'm wondering if we should do the new "Literature" level or go onto Magic Lens 1 (this is for grammar, not writing). What would you all suggest? Does the Literature level grammar have new content? Thanks!
  18. I heard that the 6 and 7 books are very similar and some people have been able to skip 7 with no problem. I'm using 6 this year and plan to skip 7 - going right into 8. If it doesn't work out I will drop back to 7.
  19. I just started using SWICC-B after SWI-A. Unfortunatly I had to skip SWICC-A because I couldn't afford it, but I was able to obtain a used SWICC-B at a very good price. There are a few things that are not explained in this level that I’m sure were explained well in the skipped one. That being said, can anyone explain the Subject Sentence Opener to me? Does the subject have to be the FIRST word, or can it have words in front of it (i.e. adjectives)? Thank you!
  20. Thanks! After looking these over, I think that The Thinking Toolbox would be a nice, gentle intro to logic followed by The Fallacy Detective.
  21. I'm not familiar with McCall-Crab, but I don't feel that the R&S reading workbooks are busy work. We did Grades 1-4 and I think that they helped to cement the Biblical stories and really made dd think. I think they were worth it and I highly recommend doing them.
  22. I would like to fit in a logic course for my dd next school year (7th grade). She has never done one before, so what would be good one to start with? Something that is fun and fast would be great. Thanks
  23. That does sound like a pain. It sounds like it would be worth buying the student book. Thanks for the reply!
