  1. Ha ha! THIS is why I support a healthcare reform, but not a national healthcare system. No way is the federal government capable of running something like that. They are experts in INefficiecy. It is also the reason I scoff at the conspiracy theorists. The Feds can't even do a basic job well, much less handle something on that large of scale.
  2. Straight bleach might be your only hope. Vinegar is used to 'set' food coloring when dyeing stuff, so I'd skip that. Was it the little food color droppers or the Wilton's jars of food color paste?
  3. It can take a few months to recover from anemia, so keep taking your prenatals. Adhesions don't necessarily hurt, unless one starts forming in a place that will be affected by movement. I would expect that you will make a full recovery, but it might take a little longer with the blood loss and the fact that you are older this time.
  4. CLE would fit your requirements, except for the secular part. It is not secular, but there is very little biblical content to the math curriculum. My child has absolutely thrived with CLE.
  5. Chiropractor is where I go for my jaw issues. Usually, it's something out of alignment with my neck that causes it. Once you get it adjusted, and it's no longer sore, you can work on strengthening the muscles by opening your mouth, putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth, then closing your mouth while pushing your tongue into the roof of your mouth to prevent your mouth from closing easily. You should feel resistance in your jaw. I do this a couple of times when it starts bothering me, and it helps. I got this exercise from this book: http://www.amazon.com/Instant-Relief-Tell-Where-Hurts/dp/0553585479/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1444787708&sr=1-2&keywords=tell+me+where+it+hurts
  6. I attended a private Christian school, and I reallyreallyreally wanted to avoid any religious curriculum with my daughter, based on my experience with it. After trying some excellent curriculums that just didn't quite work well with my child, I reluctantly purchased CLE last year. It has been a HUGE success. We use the math, LA, and reading, and my daughter loves it. It has given her so much confidence, that she now proudly proclaims that math is her favorite subject!
  7. Just an FYI that if you do chop jalapeños, and end up touching your eye on accident, milk works just as well in the eye as it does in the mouth.
  8. Oh, I have so many more Ambien stories. Fortunately, I react to it in a way that I'm ok with. I took it pretty regularly for years, when I worked night shifts. My best advice for anyone taking Ambien is to get all ready for bed, with lights out, before taking it. DO NOT wait for it to make you sleepy! You have about 15-20 minutes after taking it, before you become influenced by it. Let your SO know you are taking it, and that it is a hallucinogenic sedative. Your hallucinations are unpredictable, and can be unpleasant. They can also be completely benign, and/or make for some interesting stories. They need to know that under NO circumstances are you allowed to operate a moving vehicle. They also need to know that you may appear fully awake, and may do normal awake things, but you are actually being heavily influenced by the medication. You may also want to discuss with your SO that your ability to consent to relations (TeA) is heavily impaired. If that thought bothers you, please discuss with your SO what your wishes are.
  9. I full on hallucinate on Ambien, which I rather enjoy, lol. I've never wet the bed on Ambien, but I have wet the bed. I kinda wished I had Ambien to blame! I used to have packages show up on my door, with no recollection of having ordered anything. That was fun! I also once had a dream that I was on a water ride. Unfortunately, I was taking a bath. I woke up a couple of hours later, shivering in cold bath water, with a really wet bathroom. I guess I had fun on that water ride!
  10. You can't get any easier than Idaho for homeschooling. The law states that I have to provide an education from the ages of 7 to 16. That's pretty much the extent of the regulations. I'm happy to not have any hoops to jump through, but it is terribly easy to hide educational neglect. However, the state needs to correct the educational neglect happening in the public schools, before it can make a dent elsewhere :/
  11. Thank you so much! I was just looking for an audio version last week. Umsami, I am right there with you on Jim Weiss.
  12. Plants have different light requirements. I have a couple of aquariums with low-light plants, so I can just use the light that came with it and everything does fine. My bigger tank has plants that have a more moderate light requirement, so I invested in an LED fixture that has a stronger output, and different light colors to maximize the plant growth. It's basically a grow light. That white stuff that gets on everything is the annoying part of having hard water :/ I have no ideas for keeping it clean, that is also fish safe. My turtle tank is the worse, and I'm probably going to have to scrape it off with a glass scraper.
  13. What does she have on there now, and what is in the aquarium? These are perfectly adequate for a couple of fish and no live plants :http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aqua-Culture-LED-Hood-for-10-Gallon-Aquariums-Fish-Aquatic-Pets/20693147
  14. Is this some sort of biblical scat fetish (vomit) ?
  15. I agree! I was exposed to the stories and read them myself from a young age. I think that exposure occurring before I was really old enough to understand what was happening in the stories, sort of desensitized me to how awful it all really was. Going back and reading them later, after a long period of no exposure to it, made me realize how truly horrific much of the bible really is. I'm unable to reconcile my values with the character of God and what he values, as recorded in scripture :/
  16. I'm in favor of keeping siblings together if at all possible. My child is adopted and I work to maintain a relationship with the bio parents, so my daughter can have a relationship with her younger brother. I think social workers should do a better job communicating with foster parents so that they have the info they need and can keep their expectations in check.
  17. It is a really great math program. It somehow manages to be both gentle and rigorous. It teaches directly to the child by introducing one new concept with a handful of problems to solve, then spends the rest of the lesson reviewing previous concepts. This approach likely works well for the majority of kids, but might bomb for the smaller percentage of kids that are able to master concepts quickly and not need much review. There are math programs better suited for those kids. The CLE approach has created in my child the ability to feel successful in math, and to enjoy math so much that she proudly proclaims that math is her favorite subject! My criticisms of CLE is that is a little lighter on teaching conceptually than I would like. They use the terms 'carry' and 'borrow,' which are not accurate. I have rephrased these terms to be 'make a ten' and 'break a ten' (or hundred or thousand, etc), which I feel is a more accurate way of stating what we are doing. I also find it incredibly helpful to use manipulatives to show these concepts, which is also encouraged in the teachers manuals. The other issue with CLE is that the story problems are pretty easy. This will be something that I will supplement this year with a word problem workbook, probably from Singapore Math. Other than that, I really can't complain about this program. I wanted to avoid programs that weren't secular, and I was really reluctant to buy CLE for that reason, but I'm glad that I did!
  18. There is a placement test for CLE that you can give him in order to figure out which level to start him out. Honestly, though, based on what you wrote, I think you will be happy with Singapore. Math Mammoth is also good, and feels less "bulky," because all they need are the worksheets, as opposed to textbooks, workbooks, instructors guides, etc.
  19. There is a Facebook group for Spokane homeschoolers that is really helpful if you are looking at living on the east side of the state. Lots of homeschoolers experienced with WA laws, as well as resources for testing, portfolios, and qualifying courses. As far as I can tell, WA is a pretty easy state to homeschool, but there are a few hoops to jump through.
  20. Ummm, I'm pretty sure that Hannibal wasn't recommending *calf* liver to pair with fava beans... Don't worry, Unsinkable, you weren't the only one that immediately thought of that reference, lol. I'm not sure I will ever be able to eat fava beans, thanks to that movie.
  21. Ugh, I vote we add a Penelope Trunk disclaimer to thread titles. We can call it the "Penelope Effect."
  22. I would ask the ped for a referral to see a surgeon for a consult. The surgeons I know don't generally repair them before they are a year old, but I think it would help ease your mind a bit to know that it has been seen.
