  1. My son started MEP Reception at about 3.8 and finished at age 4.5. The mental calculations get more complicated towards the end, but you could slow down for awhile if you need to. Here is a review I wrote about MEP Reception that you are welcome to read. Good luck. :)
  2. You are welcome to link to my blog: Northwoods Classical Academy. I recently wrote a post about how we got involved in Math Competitions and our experiences. The Making of a Mathlete.
  3. My second grader is currently using Singapore Math 3, but he really wants to start Beast Academy and has been reading the 3A Guide on his own.
  4. Our favorites this year: Art of Problem Solving Books - (I own Pre-Algebra, Intro to Algebra, Counting & Probability, Number Theory, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, and Volume I: The Basics). My daughter did well on the AMC8 and brought home a MathCounts trophy this spring, and I know these books were a great help in her training. We've also enjoyed Mapping the World with Art. We are nearing the end, but we still look forward to this program. I have the video course and book. No big losers this year.
  5. You are welcome to view my daughter's: 7th Grade (Current schedule)
  6. Our second quarter report and math competition prep. Second Quarter Stretch
  7. My 12 year old daughter usually wants Legos. She likes some of the new Hobbit Lego sets coming out at the end of November and the Vampire Castle. She is easy to shop for. ;)
  8. Ours is up. With all the competitions going on around here, Week 11 - Strategy.
  9. Though you don't have to, I think both PreK and K are great times to do fun math. My son, age 4.5, just finished Lesson 60 of MEP Reception, and you are welcome to read a review I just wrote on it. The focus on thinking with mental operations is very good. MEP is 'free' - but it must be printed, and the color ink necessary for Reception is more expensive. Counters (can be something from around the house) and dice are needed for some of the games in MEP. We are currently using Miquon Orange and have also used Singapore Essentials. Both of these are inexpensive, but I think also an enjoyable way to introduce math topics. I would also get the C Rods and later a place value activity kit (I got mine at Lakeshore Learning a few years ago).
  10. I'm combining Singapore with MEP (and Beast Academy) for my 5th and 2nd grade sons, and Singapore with MEP Reception and Miquon for my 4 year old. There are aspects of all these programs that I like - some of which you can read about in the links. But I don't think you need to supplement Singapore if you use the HIG (I'm referring to the Standards since that's what I use), Text, Workbook, and some of the supplementary materials (IP or CWP - my favorite parts of the program). For more review you can also add in the Extra Practice or Tests.
  11. This year I'm using MEP with Singapore Math. If you'd like to read about how I'm combining them, here is a review I wrote about grades 5, 2 and Reception; and another I wrote only on MEP Reception. It depends on the lesson, but I often print the copymasters (along with the Lesson Plans and the Practice Book pages) in order to not have to write out a topic on the white board. I strongly recommend the Lesson Plans which I think are very good and not to be missed.
  12. I just posted ours, Week 9 - First Quarter Reflection. It's a look back over nine weeks. :)
  13. Here is a more detailed list of what my 5th-grade son is doing this year. Kolbe Academy has some good 5th grade science books.
  14. For my current 7th grade daughter - AoPS curricula, offline so far: 6th: Intro to Algebra (also used throughout the summer) 7th: Intro to Number Theory & Intro to Geometry 8th: Intro to Counting & Probability & Intermediate Algebra 9th: Pre-Calculus & Intermediate Counting & Probability 10th: Calculus Somewhere in there I'd like her to possibly do some of the programming classes AoPS offers. This year she has been also preparing for math contests on Fridays, so AOPS math subjects are only getting done four days per week.
  15. On the website there are some teacher notes here: Facts to Know and Remember for MEP Year 4, which you may find helpful. Previous years are also listed. Here are the Learning Objectives for Year 4. One of the things I like best about MEP are the Lesson Plans. :) You could go back to previous years for just the topics you haven't seen in awhile. For example, Combinatorics is used throughout MEP, but you may have to back up to a previous year Lesson plan for that topic when it was better explained in an earlier year. I print off the Lesson Plans, some of the Copymasters (to reduce my own need to write it out on the white board), and the Practice book pages. This page has a lot of helpful information.
  16. I have read through both at level 4, and the Process Skills in Problem Solving (PSPS) will show you how to model and solve many of the problem types that come up in Singapore Math at that level by guiding you through each type in a step-by-step way. A little bit of the discovery method in the CWP 4 will be lost if you use PSPS4 first, but a person just starting out with Singapore word problems may find that PSPS4 gives more direction to get started with. If you are not familiar with the way Singapore word problems work, it may be useful to go through PSPS4 before starting CWP4. Good luck. :)
  17. My advice is to remind her what basic division is using whole numbers. Then when she is comfortable with that, show her that when dividing fractions you will be using rational numbers (fractional parts) rather than whole numbers, but the same idea is applied. I would use manipulatives (like paper or magnetic rectangles, circles, squares) to demonstrate what is happening to aid her visually. Sometimes just slowing down for awhile to let it sink in is helpful.
  18. Most of ours have been a hit this year. But Legos really stand out around here. ;)
  19. You could write your own assessments by choosing one or two problems from the previous sections. It may also give you an idea of what is being retained and act as a review for him. We use BA as a supplement, so I have not written assessments for my son. Good luck. :)
  20. I just saw this from the AMC. It is a zip code finder to locate schools giving the AMC. You must contact the school and the results will be sent to the school. Perhaps someone will find it helpful. Search for a school that is likely giving the AMC test
  21. I'll join you. I just posted ours, Week 5 - Changing Season. :)
  22. Do you have the HIG for SM5A (Standards)? Do you have the SM 5 Extra Practice books? Are you having him work through the practice sections in the workbook? I agree that Unit 1 in 5A covers a lot. I would have him focus on long division for awhile. Also before beginning the multi-digit long division (which comes towards the end of Unit 2), I would make sure he know is multiplication and division math facts inside and out.
