  1. Well, I think the dd is after a Bridezilla $$$ blingy type of wedding? That being said, if she really wants a wedding, I'd pay for the JP, cake and BBQ at my place. But there is NO way I am footing the bill for a lavish wedding for 2 kiddos who still need to grow up. Time has a way of waking up people to their folly in a severe manner. I like the idea of paying for her education regardless of her being married or a single mom. That girl needs a plan for $$ with a boyfriend like that. That poor baby born to those parents. Wow.
  2. The letter seemed fine to me. I'm a former Elementary Schoolteacher. I have to admit I am having a tough time figuring out why the school librarian has to show a movie... unless she is not allowing the students to check out a book the last few weeks of school? I recall my library times truly being only 20 minutes. It took us 5 minutes to get there. And another 5 minutes to get out of the library by 25 minutes (before or after the hour) -- so the other teacher's class (waiting outside) can enter in. I've experienced really good librarians and really lousy librarians. I think this librarian could have done a group lesson, genre wrapup of the year powerpoint, or a fun class game... eh, but that is just me. Sorry that happened to you. But on the other hand, Dumbo is a good movie.
  3. Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions!! :hurray: This most likely dates me as an old f@rt... but, back when I was in high school, we had to read Earth Abides. That was a great read. Not sure if 21st Century kiddos would enjoy it, tho'?
  4. Oooh... very good point. And he is a reluctant reader. ;) The last book series he read on his own were the Warrior (Cat book series) books. I, myself, would love to sit and read Farenheit 451 as a Summer read!
  5. I'm about to do some Summer Reading choices for my teen son as part of his English credit, but am leaning to my old fave book, 1984 by George Orwell. Would my choice be stodgy and dull? Any ideas?

  7. I agree. And I concur on how strange of a turn this thread has taken. I think the topic brings out our emotional nature, perhaps? By the way, Joanne, you are spot on for your guess. The young lady's mom is against her dd divorcing the young man and called to tell him that there are 2 generations of women who are on SSRIs for good reason. Both the husband and mother-in-law suspect the wife/young lady has some legitimate (biochemical) issues that are unaddressed. It came up in counseling too, but the young lady refused to seek help in this area. She seems (to me) to be very self-destructive as a life pattern? Quite sad.
  8. :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: Hubby has severe sleep apnea (20+ events an hour) and he loves the nasal "pillows" -- he hated the ordinary face mask that was issued to him in the beginning. He now gets a full night's rest and the machine really helps!!
  9. Thank you everyone for the words of wisdom. I am having my husband read all of your replies and it has been very reassuring for him to see that you all concur with what he advised to our young friend. It just hurts my heart to see so much pain with this situation. I do appreciate your advice.
  10. Really??? Wow. And yes, I agree... our friend needs to see a lawyer ASAP.
  11. Thanks Joanne! The young man loves her -- but she just does not love him. No extramarital affairs, no abuse, and she just wants to walk away. Would appreciate any more advice for the young man regarding Family Court.
  12. Hey Fellow Hivers, Got a bit of a situation for you all. Curious what y'all think... we have a young friend whose wife announced this weekend she is leaving him. We've stayed neutral over the last 6 months and counseled both kiddos (they're 25 and this is their 4th year of marriage) since Thanksgiving. He wants to give the relationship one more try and she is feeling like she needs her freedom. Here is where we need some wisdom: - The young wife is demanding the soon-to-be-ex that he pay 1/2 of her rent for a NEW rental. He makes more $$ than she does. - They have tenetively agreed on custody of their 2 year old child 50/50 -- without having gone to Family Court here in TX. (Note that TX there is no such thing as legal separation...) But the young man is nervous about agreeing to co-sign and pay for his soon-to-be ex-wife's rent... as he will have to live elsewhere. She is making it sound like he HAS to do this for the sake of his daughter. We advised the young man to not co-sign or agree to this idea. - This young man now has to look for rental housing elsewhere and has found a studio like (cheap) apartment -- but he asked us today if the Family Court Judge would look down on his choice of rental & location and he would end up losing custody of his child. He is wondering if he has to choose a nice (i.e. more expensive) rental despite his income being not so great. Does Family Court have a bias against low-income housing? These kids live in a nice (suburb of DFW) college town... not in the inner city by any means. (?????) Thanks in Advance!
  13. I saw the video on the news the other day and thought the same thing too. Um, perhaps this is Phoebe's sister or long-lost relative? I thought it was amusing to see her all dressed up with jewelry instead of exercise clothing too. Heheheee... ETA: OMGawd. Just clicked on the Amazon link. The author of the book, Prancercise, is the chick in the video!!! Joanna Rohrback. Her bio reads: "Joanna took some "time-out" to create her Prancercise®Program in 1989 as well as the video Funky Punky's Prancercise Program ,which she copyrighted ."
  14. Nutz... did we all scare her off? Oh my.
  15. Avoid the 635 as a commute at all costs. It is a nightmare. And I personally would not live anywhere near Love Field -- or crowded suburbs like Lewisville, Arlington, Plano, or Irving. Traffic alone in those areas are outrageous. Lewisville ISD is gigantic and has its own sets of academic issues. Not very highly regarded. If you live in Collin or Denton County -- why not have hubby commute to work via the North Dallas Tollway? I have a friend who works for Southwest (Dallas Love Field) and his commute is 30-40 minutes from South Frisco. (He lives near the 121 in an older part -- but reasonably priced section of Frisco.) Frisco's Homeschool group number close to 200+ families and offers a lot of social outings. Low crime and if you purchase a home in Frisco, the value will hold well as many families tend to be upper-mobile execs ($$ Yuppies driving Lexus cars) and the public school ISD is very good. Little Elm is cheaper to buy a home compared to Frisco, but is land locked by Lake Lewisville on one section of the city. Plus its ISD is not that great academically. West McKinney is cheaper to live in than Frisco and the ISD is not bad. If you want land, try Aubrey, Prosper or outside of McKinney. There are other great support groups like PEACH, MARCH, and tons of co-ops. North TX is very homeschool friendly.
  16. Why yes... I do wear my sombrero daily and hold up a pipin' hot pan of tasty enchiladas for all to munch on.
  17. In my family (and culture), men and boys are not expected to lift a finger when it comes to "women's work". Guests were also fussed over and not expected to help with dishes. When my dh met my family, he was fussed over like he was a king with food and he LOVED it! I have to admit I am the same way with dh and my son... I fuss over him with meals, laundry, and they are not expected to lift a finger. However, they know if I need help, they pitch in. Son can adapt to other folk's home rules too. Your ways may be different from his family's ways. I would not go by a first impression.
  18. The GED exam is TOUGH. Can the GED be a goal down the road? Her reading level needs to improve before trying to pass the GED. I like the Wordly Wise Series by EPS. I've used it for remedial students and it is a great vocabulary and reading comprehension tool. I recommend using Book 2 if she is at a 3rd grade level... so she can succeed and move on to Book 3. You can buy the book at any teacher store or Mardel's. HTH
  19. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: If you can, please reach out to Joanne and get her cell #. You have a lot of cyber-friends here on the WTM Boards who worry about you.
  20. Why not suggest dh give this summer a trial run for keeping her reviewing skills a la afterschooling? If he hates it, then you have your answer.
