  1. My daughter has been on meds for several years now (adderrall primarily). This year we had to add Wellbutrin to the mix around lunchtime. Without the Wellbutrin, she was becoming a frustrated ball of anger when her meds wore off, especially if her school wasn't done for the day. We like adderrall because she can skip it on non school days without issues.

  2. Make sure you also check with the water parks rules and regulations on approved eyewear on slides. We have been to extremely strict ones where glasses on a cord wouldn't fly. Some of their extreme plunge style rides required that you leave goggles in a holding box (stupidly up top on the ride so you had to figure out how to get back to it). Sun sensitive kid can't ride those as he can't see without his tinted goggles.

This is the site I was trying to remember the other night. A little bit pricier then some of the other options but these are actually cheap for dive masks in general much less prescription ones.

  3. I am not "legally" blind because I can get 20/20 with correction still. I am well beyond (20/1200) the legally blind defined level without correction. I to have been told I'm legally blind without correction by the eye doctor. I think they use this terminology to say "don't drive without your glasses".

As for those with concerns about driving with one eye, our body does amazing thing to compensate. I've lost a contact more than once and had to drive home that way. It only take a minute or two before my brain pretty much shuts down the eye's input receptors and only the good eye contributes. I would assume that someone who always lives like that has found a similar compensation. If you think your dd is bumping into things because of limited periphal vision, I'd insist she give contacts a try before turning her out on the road. If she still bumps into things, she might just be clumsy like my oldest boy has always been (just unaware of his surroundings because he daydreams while walking around).

  4. Those that say to just walk around without them just cannot fathom what that is like for people in the -10 range. I can get around my bedroom without my glasses or contacts, the rest of the house... not so much.

I'll try and remember to look at the company I used for my scuba masks. After a scary panic attack underwater because my mask flooded and lost both contacts, I had to get prescription masks. One of them is close at -10 (still a half point low) and the other is only -8.5. I can see well enough with the weaker one to be happy, but I can see farther with the stronger ones.

I had one that is a fairly weak prescription but is highly sun sensitive. I've yet to find a pair of goggles dark enough for him to be really happy

  5. I call my son's feet "stuffed pork chop feet," because aren't just wide, they are thick! When he was little, I bought him Stride Rite XXW shoes in whatever style would accommodate his foot. At the time, they told me that he would eventually grow out of it and not need such a wide shoe. That's why they didn't carry XXW shoes in bigger sizes. Well, he didn't outgrow it! Then, I bought all sorts of adjustable fisherman sandals, which sort of worked (Keen was one of the brands). He also went through a long Croc phase. Now, as a teenager, all he can wear are New Balance in 4E width. He tried the 6E, and while they were more comfortable in the toe box, the heel was also wide, so his foot kept slipping. Only certain styles will work even in New Balance 4E. Shopping is an absolute nightmare. Anything that is made for his type of foot looks like it belongs on a man 80 years old!

This site might help out a little bit if you've never seen it. I have a wide toe box and a narrow heel so I wear my shoes laced like the slipping heel style. That allows me to buy the width I need and not have heel slippage.

I have two boys with high insteps. I am glad they are making it up to men's sizes where there are more wide width shoes available. I am going to try one of the other alternate lacing methods on the one that still complains.

  6. Actually, the 22 is normal and the 16 is U.S. vanity sizing. My mother sews and whenever I have her make me clothes I have to size up on the pattern several sizes above what I usually wear. The larger size is based on international standard measurements and the smaller size is a result of U.S. clothing retailers pandering to our vanity. Don't let it get to you, it's just a number. You are so much more than you dress size.

This is what is going on. Pull up a sewing pattern and compare your measurements to it. I was wearing a size 12 in stores at one point and that was an 18 in patterns.

  7. You know, that's what they say, but everytime I try that I end up with something that just doesn't feel right. Like the shelves are too far apart. or close together or something. Then book pages start flapping out and it looks more like arm flab.

I think sister sizes only go so far. I technically measure at a 32 D but the 32 band is just a hair snug so I can use the 34 C trick and it works. My dd measures the same size but the 34 band would never work for her as it would just be too big.

  8. if you have access to a naturopathic doc who does a lot with mthf - I would urge you to go there. few - VERY few, allopaths are familiar enough with mthf to actually be competent to treat a patient with it.

I'm  also homozygous for mthf - and the way my DO treated me made me worse.  she knew enough to test for the gene, but wasn't unaware of all the other nuances that can  come with the mutation.  (she was following the protocols of another allopath.)  I've been dealing with a side effect of  too much (15mg) too fast (immediately.  no ramping at all.) ever since.

the only otc mthf you should trust is thorne (it also tends to get better response than the rx deplin) - and start small.  very small.  allopaths tend to rx 15mg off  the bat.  never, ever,  ever . . . . start with 1mg. wait at least a week before adding.  I'm at 8.5. . . and it's questionable if  I will still be at 8.5 in a week or two.  it's taken me two years to get to  this dose, and I've had to drop back down several times.)

I'm not even sure how to look up a naturopathic doc.  I seriously doubt there is one nearby.  I'm going to give the hematologist a go with it as the appointment is so close.  I have no choice but to go with her for other reasons that she is monitoring.

  9. I am below the level of normal in other countries and my dr. had me start taking an OTC b12, with no suggestions of what brand or amount.  About the same time, I discovered I am homo for MTFHR gene so research lead me to using methyl b12.  Unfortunately, I didn't handle it well at all (yeah, found out I'm also homo for the gene that says methyl=bad). I've had to stop for now, but have an appointment with my hematologist in a couple of weeks and I will get her suggestions.

  10. Dd will be duel enrolling Spanish this up coming school year. I could in theory do it at home, but I know she will work harder for the college prof. Right now I have started her on Duolingo just to start building vocabulary up. I keep telling her that most kids going into college Spanish probably took it in high school so she will have to do serious catch up in that regards. I'm also trying to convince her to learn Chinese instead because everyone will probably at the same newbie level for it, and the prof is someone I play D&D with.

  11. Do more heavy lifting and strength training?  Muscle is more weight than fat, and can be put on without messing around with diet too much.

This might actually be a good point as to why my scale has dropped recently. I've been injured in some form or fashion since Sept and I have had to cut back on my taekwondo.  I had been going 3-4 times a week and now I am down to twice, and I can't push as hard as I used too (hence the injuries).  I might have to look into substituting those other days for some strength training at home.  On the flip side of that though, the more I workout the less I want to eat.

I wonder how likely that is?  When I was younger in university I was in about the same place, partly do to a somewhat restricted diet and partly due to stress.  Since then I've gone to a more normal weight though typically I lose when I am stressed.  I've not tended to balloon up more though, just from easting a more reasonable diet more regularly.

That, I would say, is probably key.  A dairy free vegetarian diet can be hard to get enough fat and protein unless you are really shoveling back the food, especially if you are active.  If by nature you are not a big eater, it is a real challenge - dairy and meat really are dense foods.  I would look at finding a way to incorporate more fat and protein on a regular basis, I don't think that will make you keep gaining.

Trying something temporarily will not, I suspect, help, you'll just gain and lose again.  I suppose you could try a supplement, but personally I don't think that is a healthy way to eat.  If your diet isn't adequate, you need to adjust it.

I am currently yo-yoing.  I gain a few, I lose a few.  Most recently I was up 10lbs, but have lost 13.  I am not a big eater and tend to have to force myself to eat at times.  Add to the fact I am trying to restrict my folic acid intake, and most processed bread foods are off the table (thank you enriched flour :glare: ).  I have found a local brand of bread that doesn't use enriched flour, so sandwiches are going to be easier now.

Add a small snack of nuts daily then cut it back or out once at your goal weight.  Nutritious and yummy.

I need to get back into my evening snack of nuts.  That might help.

For example, I give my son equal parts raw almond butter and coconut oil mixed together (sometimes with some honey) with banana or apple slices. It's high calorie without a lot volume.

Maybe you could try to increase your intake of healthy fats. Do you like avocados and such?

I can always eat a snack or meal even when I'm not very hungry :( so I have to ask, can you simply eat more?

I do like avocados and eat them when we have them in the house.  They can be pretty pricey unless I get them from Sam's/Costco and then it's 50/50 as to whether they have been abused and will bruise before I can eat the bag.  Eating more isn't easy when nothing is appealing.

Look at a site called Chocolate Covered Katie. She gained weight as a vegan eating whole foods and not "junk." Her body image story is on her blog.

I'll give the website a look when I have a few minutes.  Thank you for the suggestion.

I came in to say weight lifting too.

But do you feel you are underweight because you are not getting enough calories (is your metabolism slow, do you feel low energy, etc) or because you feel you would look better a few pounds heavier?

If it's the first, I'd add in a dense snack, if it's the latter, weight training.

I'd say it is both.  I'm not very energetic these days and I'm tired of people asking me if I've lost weight.  I'd happily see the scale move upwards if I was bulking up a little and not just filling out a little.  I will admit that I am starting to look a bit scrawny.

  12. Son is allergic to soy so his chocolate is $3.50 a bar. He will only eat ham for lunch, but in the last month or so he decided ham is gross so he needs chocolate to wash it down with, but he doesn't want anything else as his lunch protein.

I'd starve him out. With a 13 yo boy, I'd figure that would take about an hour. Nothing goes in the mouth before some form of protein that doesn't need to be washed down with chocolate.

  13. We were going to start DD in Spanish this year, but we were informed she was accepted too late to get into any of the Spanish 1 classes.  Honestly that was probably a good thing.  She ended up doing Eng Comp 101 last semester and is working on 102 this semester.  I think it has helped her to know what the heck the teacher is saying to learn note taking.  We will tackle foreign language next year.

  14. I weigh myself first thing before getting in the shower (wet hair weighs more). I even make sure to take my glasses off first. Silly, huh?

I'd have to bend down and hug the floor to see the scale without my glasses on.  That said, they probably do add a few ounces.

I figured that the norm would be first thing in the morning.  I will continue with that time and use it as the reminder that I have to eat that day.  I've been suffering from lack of appetite for a little longer then my normal bouts and my weight is slipping too much.

  15. I'm just curious for those that are watching their weight, what time of day do you check your weight?  Obviously, first thing in the morning would be the lightest, but is that what you consider your "true" weight?

  16. Both kids are tired/bored/angry at everything this afternoon and evening.

Made them go to Tae Kwon Do anyway.

Anyone else experiencing "full moon" kids?

Sounds like a night that needed taekwondo.  I always am looking for those kicking bags when I start to feel that way.

  17. My boys are fraternal twins. One grew earlier that the other. There was a long stretch between maybe 11-14 when one twin was between 1-3 inches taller than the other. And people would mention it. One guy selling us a Christmas tree heard they were twins and asked the slower grower, "why are you so short?" True story. Exact words.

At 18 they are the same height. The slow grower was always so stoic about it, and I really admired that. I think he deserves to be an inch taller as a reward for his graciousness. They are both 5'11, so not super tall but not short. I was worried for a while, though.

My frat twins will be twelve in May.  The younger of the two can rest his chin on his brother's head at this point.  He has always been 1-2 inches taller (since birth), but this hitting puberty first has had him shooting way up.  I will probably be looking him in the eye before summer.  Older twin doesn't seem to mind too much, but the fact that his little brother (23 months younger) is about to catch him might cause him more concern.  We are thinking that he is taking after DH's side of the family and will be a late bloomer, whereas his brothers take after my side of the family.

I was 5' 6" at 11 and only gained .5" more after that (yep I was that really tall kid in 5th grade). Both my brother and my sister were also tall for their peers with my brother hitting 6" by 7th grade age (6th grade for him care of repeating 2nd).

DH hit is growth spurt closer to 15 though and he is now 6', so he just took a little longer to get there.

  18. You should also look at your other mutations, because there are others that interact with the MTHFR mutations, which can require a different form of B12. For example, my son and I have TAQ mutations, in addition to MTHFR, which mean that we need hydroxycobalamin, not methylcobalamin. For us, methylcobalamin made things worse.

The whole methylation thing is a lot more complex than just "if you have one of the MTHFR mutations, you should take methylated B vitamins," and you can make things worse if you're not careful. MTHFR.net is a good source of info, but you'll need to spend some time poking around and reading lots of the articles and comments. There are several forums for people with MTHFR issues, where people discuss various protocols and what has and hasn't worked for them. You'll find that for most people there is a lot of tweaking needed to get everything well balanced.

How fast did you feel worse on the methylcobalamin/what side effects did you have?  I just took my first one this morning and now I'm paranoid because I am also homozygous for TAQ (as well as MTHFR).  My dr. office just said go get some b12 off the shelf, but I ended up ordering Deva brand quick dissolving stuff. This is an expensive endeavor for tweaking things.

  19. You know her tax situation from year to year.  Just a couple of things to think about, does she typically get a refund, even a small one? Could she need that money?  Does she usually have to pay out a lot and she is afraid that the money they set aside to pay each year might get spent with the extra expenses?

If you don't think either of these are why she might be anxious, then like others said, assure her that you can file an extension in April if it comes to that.
