  1. My daughter like this one: THE PARTS OF SPEECH Every name is called a NOUN, As field and fountain, street and town In place of noun the PRONOUN stands As he and she can clap their hands The ADJECTIVE describes a thing, As magic wand and bridal ring The VERB means action, something done - To read, to write, to jump, to run How things are done, the ADVERBS tell, As quickly, slowly, badly, well The PREPOSITION shows relation, As in the street, or at the station CONJUNCTIONS join, in many ways, Sentences, words, or phrase and phrase The INTERJECTION cries out, 'Hark! I need an exclamation mark!' Through Poetry, we learn how each of these make up THE PARTS OF SPEECH .
  2. I've been working on our next years school plans (for 4th and 2nd grade) and I keep being drawn to several items for each subject. Part of me wants to keep moving through what we have been using and part of me wants add something new. For example: Spelling- I want to continue using All about Spelling because I like how well my daughter does with it, but then I also want to add Spelling workout because it's independent and they can work on it by themselves while i'm working with their sister. Grammar I want to start a new program that is called The good and the beautiful language arts and literature which covers grammar, spelling (yup another spelling), reading, literature & writing, but I want to also continue Explode the Code books because they are independent and the kids enjoy them. Math- We will continue with Saxon, but then I see all the fun supplements you can add like Division Designs, Double Digit Decoders: Addition, Double Digit Decoders: Subtraction (Math Mosaics), and math mammoth. I have no intention on switching from Saxon because it works for us and I don't think we'll have gaps. The others I'm tempted to add just seem like a fun addition. Logic- and don't get me started on all the fun workbook I could add. Let's admit, those books are fun. And the list goes on. Why do I feel drawn to keep adding to our days? It over complicates and adds more items for us to check off each day. Especially since our days are already complicated enough with a special needs 2 year old with all the accompanying therapy and dr appointments. Every year I plan these elaborate plans with all the bells and whistles and all the cool things we can do and then reality sets in and I think, "what am I thinking?". I need to choose one thing for each subject and do it well and thoroughly. Sure we can do it all, but will they be done well? or will we just be checking boxes and have the illusion we are learning more? Please tell me I'm not the only one who get sucked into all the possibilities? How do you keep yourself from going overboard and feel content?
  3. We've tried everything with my almost 3 yr old (developmentally 12-18 months) nothing entertains him for very long. What we have had to do is have my other kids take turns playing with him while i work one on one with the other. My daughter's are 7 and 9 and they love this time with their brother. Everyone stays in the same room so i can keep an eye on them and the room gets really messy, but he's happy getting lots of attention. Oh and mine mouths EVERYTHING too. Good luck! 4. I'm looking for ideas for summer math. For those who don't school year round: What do you have your kids do in the summer so they don't lose all their progress? Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk
  5. We've got 3 r's, science, tech, and history as well as 1 class outside of the house to be with friends all figured out for next school year. But I would like to add on something fun to do within the house for my 4th grade daughter. Any suggestions?
  6. History at our house is the first to get put aside when we are running short in time. This year we have a 1st and 3rd grader as well as a 2 year old who's sole purpose in life is to undo any and every plan I come up with. This includes nicely laid out history and science lessons. I've sort of have to do a minimalist approach to school this year. But that's ok. Someday we will do it all. This year we are attempting History odyssey. It's a good program and I'm hoping to get back to it after the holidays, but it's just not getting done in our school so far this year. What other programs are you using that you find it simple enough that it does get done and your kids like it? Also, for those of you using History odyssey and have stuck with it for the middle and upper grades have you and the kids enjoyed it?
  7. For my family we've really had to cut down on out activities outside the house. I found myself feeling like we were always running and not really accomplishing what i wanted to. Now what we do is we have Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday's that are stay at home days where we school, read aloud, do art and science experiments. Tuesday my kids have classes outside the house, and Fridays are our fun days. We do fieldtrips, parkdays, educational games, visit grandparents etc. If We are out of the house all day, that's ok. We get everything done Monday-Thursday. Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk
  8. We play lots of games for school to add fun into out days. We're looking for some new ones. Any 1-6 grade suggestions? Here's our favorites right now: Sum swamp Speed Bumper car math Dino math tracks Sequence Numbers Pizza fraction fun Trifacta Jumpin' Chips Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk
  9. I could have written this post. You are not alone. I have anxiety about sending my little guy too preschool too. And i feel guilty just thinking about doing that and keeping his sisters home. In so torn. What ever you decide, remember every child is different and need different things. Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk
  10. I found the pdf. It was helpful. Let me see if i have this correct. So they are basically the same with the exception of intermediate having more problem solving and it had workbook with the problems already written out? Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk
  11. My daughter is working through saxon 3 right now. She is doing good with it and we really like it. I'm trying to figure out what is next for her. I have no doubt she'll be ready for the concepts in saxon 5/4, but she struggles with writing. I have already purchaced 5/4 so i could check it out. Can something chime in how intermediate 3 & 4 are? Concepts compared to 5/4. Are problems written out like in saxon 3? I'm worried that more writing will hold her back from learning in 5/4. I Guess as a last resort i could transcribe her math problems for her and she can just write the answers. Suggestions? Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk
  12. Enjoy the journey and have fun learning with your kids. Sent from my LG-K540 using Tapatalk

  14. I'm actually really excited. We didn't have any options like this before we moved 6 months ago. And now we have all sorts of options where we live now.
  15. We're going to try one out this year for the first time. I really hope it goes good. My kids get to take 4 fun elective classes on one day of the week and we get $1500 for each kid to buy curriculum and supplies we need. We're really looking forward to the fun classes they chose.
  16. I've been trying to figure out how to do this next year. Every year is different in our home. I have 6 & 8 year old and a special needs 2 year old and this year our focus for him is getting him off a feeding tube. That means lots of drs and therapist appointments. So if I can focus the time we have for school on building a strong foundation in LA, math, And hand writing I think we'll be good. My daughters are strong readers so I'll provide lots of living books on science and history. And just fun books. There are times when you need to give yourself less pressure and stress and still feel like your doing things right. I find when I try to do to much, every subject suffers and nothing we do is very thorough done. You do what's best for your family.
