  1. Anyone already align either IXL or Khan Academy with Saxon Algebra 2 (3rd edition, hopefully)? I'm trying not to circumvent this if I don't have to! Kiddo just wants some extra practice on lessons where Saxon only provides like 2 or 3 practice problems for new skills. Thanks!

  3. We have a similar thing going on. Completed Physical Science this year. Rising 7th and will be doing Biology & Algebra 2. Honestly, I figure, she will do Biology again later in highschool and will hold off on a challenging chemistry until later highschool. I'm not so sure she'd do well on the SAT subject Matter tests later, taking these courses so early and honestly, even though she loves Biology, I'm not sure of unneccesary pressures of taking this class formally so young. We finished Saxon Algebra 1 this year so I'm not concerned about math, but we may go back to do some of the AOPS algebra problems this summer. The options there seem limitless. Science, I feel is harder to find. I'd be truly happy if the highschool years (11-12th) could be mentorship or completely lab based.
  4. Wondering about feedback. The site says it has interactive quizzes and activities for the online versions. I'm looking at the Magic Lens 1 set.
  5. anyone interested in selling their Biology instructor DVD if finished with it?
  6. Anyone have the vimeo link so I can check it out beforehand?
  7. I'm sure it changes, but roughly how much time would you say your daughter spend on math outside of the class?
  8. Thanks guys. I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to assume so much about MUS because I've never even looked at it. I have a mathy daughter. The only appeal I had was that it would be taught with other kids and she wants to take a "class" to meet more friends. I'm thinking I'll sign her up for the co-op art and leave the math to AOPS as originally intended!
  9. Cross posted. I had planned to do AOPS algebra next year but our coop is offerING math u see algebra. I met with the teacher and they do not plan to use the manipulatives. We are not familiar too much with this lrogram. We are completing Dolciani Prealgebra currently. Thoughts on the program and if one can still use it effectively (how good is the textbook alone) without the blocks. I really wonder why she chose this curriculum if she doesn't plan to use it fully......

  12. Oh, I was specifically interested in the course offered by AOPS and the one from here (WTM). I didn't realize they haven't started yet. I see it's a combo of Singapore and AOPS algebra which could be interesting but I don't want her jumping around a lot either. We are finishing Dolciani prealgebra and she enjoys math but young (10) and we have been working on endurance or "grit". We also have a math mentor who could help her work through challenging problems....
  13. Can you tell me more about what sorts of things are in the enriched schedule?
  14. Thanks for the update. I have found this algebra calulator to be very helpful too since the key only has tbe odds. I can assign other problems and check work much more quickly if short on time. http://www.mathpapa.com/algebra-calculator.html
  15. Just curious how the schedule was working out and if it's running pretty much as you expected. Also when you say "allow 2 day", I assume you think it won't take your kids a full week to cover said concepts?
  16. Kathy, are you aware of anything local? I'm also in Richmond (henrico).
  17. Just wanted to say, this is not for the daughter above, we are sticking with Dolciani because it's working :)

  19. Question. Can you take the AOPS pre algebra just using the recorded lectures? I'm looking at the classes, but the one time is a conflict. Is it still worth it?
  20. Any favorites? Looking for an app that scans its querty code for tracking purposes (in other words- I'm addicted to books and tired of buying the same ones over and over again.
  21. So here's my daughters essay. She is ten in the 5th grade for writing. Not sure what to have her focus on, thoughts appreciated. Does this seem about right for her age? During the eighteenth century Small Pox was a deadly virus, infant it killed forty million people. Half the people who caught it died because there was no cure. The only help for Small Pox victims was to be held in a "Small Pox House" most likely so they couldn't infect others. Later a young doctor named Edward Jenner intentionally inoculated James Philips, an eight year old boy. He inoculated him with pus from cow pus blisters. James Philip soon developed a small fever. Jenner gave James a small dose of Small Pox, however he was immune. Edward Jenner tested the vaccine on over twenty people. He didn't understand why his vaccine worked but he believed his observations were correct. In other words the Cow Pus stopped the Small Pox from spreading then killed it. Finally Jenner published his observations. Meanwhile other doctors were skeptical. The Royal Society of Medicine would not except his discovery. Some people were afraid Cow Pus would mKe them act like cows. In contrast the vaccine was slowly excepted. The parliament gave Jenner lots of money to continue his research. Twelve thousand people were vaccinated in 1808. Soon the number of Small Pox deaths decreased by six-hundred a year.
  22. Is anyone aware of any online support groups (facebook, yahoo, google +, etc.) for folks using Human Odyssey?
  23. We've done it about 3 year snow. No sales calls, but she does attend Mathnasium so probably no need. Two years ago,a boy in our center won the national level for his age. The award that year was around 1200 bucks and a game system, which they presented to him locally aT the club. It was pretty cool.....and of course serves as motivation ever since to enter the competition :)
