  1. We finally received the letter this weekend from University of Washington and he's been admitted into the College of Engineering! Another huge relief; he is psyched!
  2. What a fun sounding job - for a kid who loves the outdoors and hard work! I may bring this up to some scouts I know.
  3. Congratulations to your ds/dd! He has not actually received the envelope yet. With the help of a friend, he was able to see on-line that he has been admitted. He read the statement about a dozen times to ensure he was understanding correctly  . For some reason, we will both feel relief when we get the actual envelope in the mail.
  4. My daughter took a gap year ( 2014 - 2015 school year) and applied to all of her schools in October. They all wanted SAT/ACT scores, her high school and college transcripts (se was full time dual enrollment as a junior and senior and earned an AA simultaneously with her high school diploma). She was treated as a freshman application to 4 of the 5 schools she applied to. The Univ of Washington considered her a transfer student because she took a year off after taking college classes in high school; if she had gone straight into college they would have considered her a freshman. She was awarded merit scholarship to the other 4 colleges.
  5. Both my kids have spring break the week of the 21st. Ds has a rowing tri-meet on a little island the weekend before (hubby and I get to stay at a resort for the night). Then, I expect his "vacation" will be finishing his Eagle Scout requirements and earning/raising money for a mission trip in July. Daughter will travel with a couple of girlfriends to Vancouver, B.C. for a couple of days of play, work a day and visit friends. We all plan to visit my dad on the east coast this summer, so we are keeping expenses down (although I would SOOOO love to head for AZ or some such place with sunshine - NOW).
  6. :confused1: Maybe you have a hoard of Trekkies in your class. No matter, I agree with the PP to keep on making it fun. Soon they will look forward to those questions!
  7. :hurray: Yay for you and your daughter! How very exciting!
  8. Great questionnaire. I am happy I landed where I expected! My candidate was 1% lower than the person I was matched with (89 vs 90%), but that person is choice #2. Those in the other party were 23% and below. Both my kids get to vote this year. I think they need to take a quiz, at least so they can figure out what some of the issues voting brings out.
  9. Just a vent... My daughter took a gap year after graduating in Jun 2014, and started back at school this past September. I "completed" our taxes on Turbo Tax as I have done every year for many moons. Holy moly! Our owed taxes shot up because she isn't considered a dependent in 2015 - she was in school for less than 5 months and she made over $4000 (yah- but not enough to live independently). I guess this is kind of a PSA.
  10. Agreeing that it is considered extra-credit for high school. That said, when my son was in middle school, I crafted a "life sciences" class that included a couple of merit badge requirements because they were appropriate. He earned the Insect Study MB that year.
  11. My ds used BJU's Cultural Geography in 9th grade, and I supplemented it with The Usborne Book of World Religions. He is a senior now full-time at the community college, and the program he is in has him taking Cultural Geography.
  12. Thank you for starting this topic! We are just beginning to travel down this road and are a bit unsure how it's going to work out. I figure God will help us (and this board!) get the smarts to do this. We agreed to help pay for 50% of in-state tuition (including room & board), no matter where the kids went. Dd is at a private school in-state and ds will most likely be going into a state school for engineering. My plan was to start earning a paycheck again. I guess I am a bit nervous about going back to work. I have a Masters in Teaching, but have little desire to teach at public schools. I used to be an engineer at a large aerospace company, but after almost 18 years at home, do I know anything now? I did score last year tests for a national company, but the little I earned practically put us in the next tax bracket. Anyway, I am finding it daunting. Guess, what I need is a bit of confidence as well.
  13. George Fox University in Oregon is a conservative Christian University (I'll let you check out whether it fits your world view) that has a Great Books program for their Honor Students.
  14. Wow, what a bummer! Has the population decreased?
  15. Peter the Great by Robert Massie (okay maybe not so much overcoming hardships). I 25th The Boys in the Boat and 10th Unbroken. The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom was inspirational as well. ETA: Into Thin Air by John Krakauer was fascinating (and I have no desire to climb Mt Everest).
  16. My ds received a scholarship from Colorado State. He also has been accepted into Washington State University!
  17. Glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I read this! Hmmm, I guess I always considered the sphincter a one way valve.
  18. I appreciated the comment from one of the school counselors who said in essence (very paraphrased), "Don't be freaked out about your essay, we are not grammar-nazis. We use it to look at the part of you that we can't gleam from the on-line application and your transcripts." My son found writing the essay less restricting after that comment.
  19. When I saw the NROTC requirement and that they would basically choose the applicant's school, I crossed it off my son's list. He really only wants to attend an in-state school and there are not 5 colleges in WA that have NROTC and his intended major. In the end he chose not to apply to any ROTC program because he feared it getting in the way of rowing. I did suggest, that he take the time to look at the programs once enrolled, and if he was still inclined, to try for their 3 or 2 year scholarships. BTW, thank you for taking time to document your lessons learned.
  20. Dd starts her work study job today - she was hired in October but the paperwork was crazy I guess. Prior to today, she's been catching up on sleep and friends.
