  1. Like it's no-frills approach and that my kids can work independently for the most part. I LOVE that my kids don't whine when that have to complete their grammar work. Another plus for us is that my kids' SAT scores for language are always high. This will be our third year using GWG and I can't see making any changes.
  2. If I bought the Combo Foundations 1 edition would I need to buy a second student activity book for my other child?
  3. I switched my girls from Saxon (which they hated) to TT. This will be their second year using TT. They love that it's on the computer and they only have to write out the problems they can't work in their heads. I like the immediate feedback and opportunity to rework problems they haven't mastered. I also like that it frees up my schedule to teach other subjects. One of my girls is working a grade ahead and the other is just finishing up her current grade level (will be a grade ahead).
  4. I purchased the Anatomy notebook this year for the girls. They love getting their notebooks out for science. They love that it's colorful and fun.
  5. LOVE IT!! We never live close to family so this car has it all for us. We can easily pack our three kids, 2 dogs and all our luggage in this car. I also seem to always find myself with extra kids so it's nice to have the space. Ours is a 2003 Yukon XL with 115,000 miles and we have never had any issues other than typical maintenance. I hope to replace this one, when I have to, with another XL or Suburban.
  6. This will be our third year with GWG (we've used grades 2,3,4 and 5). I also like the simple, no nonsense approach. My girls don't mind completing their lessons each day. I do have to sit down with my girls on occasion to explain lessons to them (like diagraming). My girls test high in language (fifth grader tests post high school and third grader is several grades ahead) so I will be sticking with GWG. It works for my girls. HTHs.
  7. This year is our third year using GWG. My girls don't mind completing their grammar lessons. They are easily understood and not too much on busy work. Both my girls tested really high in Language so we will be continuing to use the GWG books!.
  8. This is the first notebook we have actually purchased for Apologia and my girls are loving it. We have completed most of the pages we have studied so far.
  9. My kids have a math notebook to work out all of the problems that can't be done in their head. I make them write them neatly just as if they had to turn them in for a grade. It's important for them to realize they have to line everything up correctly as the problems get longer and more difficult.
  10. I didn't even purchase the workbook for TT4 last year. The kids never needed it, but it would have come in handy for their yearly evaluations this year. I did purchase the complete set for TT5 and we print out the sheets for the day's lessons when we have to run somewhere during the day. That way they can work their lessons and I input them at night.
  11. I just wanted to offer up a huge THANK YOU. My household has been kept on tender hooks these past 10 years by my oldest dd and her episodes. It seems we have had issues since she came out of the womb. I took her to a psychiatrist when she was 3 and was told that she is "too intellegent and likes to push my buttons for fun". In 2008 she had a terrible accident which almost cost her the use of her arm and had a year of therapy to regain the use of her elbow and hand. During that time she had several reactions to medications which were severe. One caused Stephen Johnson. The allergist told me, in front of her, that she will die if she has these certain medications so understandably she started having horrible anxiety attacks. We took her to another psychologist and psychiatrist this past year but they only focus on her past injuries and not the fact that we have had issues since the beginning. It's so frustrating. The medication has kept her anxiety attacks at bay, for which I am very thankful, but does nothing with the episodes. I grew up with a bipolar brother, and while she has tested not to be bipolar, that is as close as I have come to explaining these episodes. She can be having the time of her life and then melt down and scream at us for hours on end. There is NO calming her when she starts. My other two children cover their ears and go to another room. Sometimes I find out they have been crying until she quiets. It breaks my heart for all three of my girls as well as their dad and me. And, it reminds me of how my siblings and I used to cope with my brother's "lows". I have just always been very thankful that she can control her outbursts until she is safely in our car or at home and doesn't unleash on other people. Anyways, all that background is to say THANK YOU!! I was reading through these boards when I located the name of some books I had never heard off. I purchased The Explosive Child this afternoon and have already laughed and cried my way through half of the book. It is so my daughter. Finally, something that might be able to help her and us! My family may finally be able to find some peace! She is looking forward to finding a way to control her outbursts because she always feels so horribly depressed after she realizes what she has said and done.
  12. We attend VBS at two churches each year (ours and my youngest dd's school). Our church does not charge to attend but TShirts are $10 ea. Dd's school charges $10 per child with a $25 family cap and this includes Tshirts.
  13. Does anyone have a current code for them? I would like to make a purchase and anything would help!
  14. I have not had a chance to read all the replies, but I think you would find it more common among the elderly in the deep south. They grew up reading signs that stated "white" and "colored" (or worse). I don't believe that they mean it to be disrespectful so much is that is the way they grew up. And, when they were growing up this was most likely one of the more respectful terms used in the deep south. My family is from Birmingham, AL, and I grew up in southern states, and I have heard that term used often. Those people were normally elderly as it's not generally a term used by today's youth (again that term is much worse). I have learned never to try and correct an 80 yr. old man's manner of speech, the few times I tried never ended well for me! Also, you would find it common among elderly WWII veterans to use derogatory terms to describe Germans or Japanese people especially if they fought in either of these countries. It seems to be ingrained after years of having this type of mindset.
  15. Last year, my kids had 3 days of school at home and two at Blended School (Science, Social Studies, Language Arts and P.E.). Blended school lasted from 8:30 until 3:30 so I did not make them do any additional work on these days. We had to do a bit of catch up this summer to make up for not working on math every day. Plus, we had some major illnesses/accidents hit our house this last school year that interfered with our 3 days at home. Thank the good Lord that they are all healthy now and we are completely finished with all of last years materials. While we are still living in Florida (hopefully 2 more months max) they are only going to be allowed to take one day out for Blended School and we will still work 4 days at home. When we move to Alabama we will have a 4 day work week for every subject but math. We will be using Fridays for any catch up work and/or field trips and outings. The girls are THRILLED with the prospect of the new schedule. I think I really needed 5 full days when we first started our homeschool journey. This year we seem to have everything down and are much more efficient. So, the girls definitely deserve some "me" time! Of course, this year I am adding a kindergartner to the mix so I may eat these words after a few months. :)
  16. This article turns my stomach and I am from Louisiana. With this attitude they may never find themselves blessed with a "Tim Tebow". Here are some of the more upsetting quotes from the article..... The changes being examined are bills that allow home-schooled students to participate in public or private school athletics, establish a uniform grading scale, make half of teachers' evaluations depend on student performance and authorize the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to waive some of the laws that regulate public schools. School officials in Lafayette aren't sure if any home-schoolers would apply to play high school sports and "we won't know until they start practicing" next month, said Superintendent Burnelle Lemoine. Stockton said she can see "some good things and some bad things" about the new law, which gives principals authority to decide whether non-students would be allowed to participate in sports. "On the pro side, these folks are taxpayers and pay for public schools," she said. "On the con side, if the student is a discipline problem and with some home-schooled students, there are questions about curriculum and assigned grades. "My feeling is 'if you want to play with us, you ought to enroll in school,'" Stockton said. "You can make us put them on a team but you can't make them play. "I think it's a political move," she said. The law says any home-schooled student who is allowed on a high school team must live in that school's attendance zone, fulfill the same academic and physical requirements of other student-athletes and can be kicked off teams, as any other student. The law says parents must provide insurance and cannot sue if a school rejects or dismisses a home-schooled student from playing sports. Lloyd Dressel of the Louisiana School Boards Association said he attended a meeting of superintendents in Lafayette and found a general opposition to the idea of non-students being allowed on teams. "Since the law says they can play with permission of principals, some superintendents said they're going to let their principals know they're not to allow it," he said. Dressel said the fact that Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was home-schooled begs the question: If you've got a Tim Tebow in your neighborhood, would a principal be inclined to turn down his application? Maybe these Superintendents should be out looking for a new job. 17. My children have a spanish tutor from Spain, but she uses Berlitz materials for them to work on. They have a workbook and cds for every lesson. The material is fun and the cds have catchy songs to help the children remember. She picked Berlitz after much research in the United States and Spain. One reason I like the Berlitz material is that it teaches them to speak AND understand a Spanish (from Spain) accent or an accent from Latin American countries. I pay her fee (which includes materials and cds) so I am not certain what the program actually costs.
  18. We are working on week 2 of 4th and 5th grade now. This will be our third year with GWG and have been very please so we had to try the spelling program.
  19. I will definitely ask around! The problem is that we don't know exactly when we are moving. :( My husband is PCSing July 26th and living in our camper until our house sells. The girls and I don't get to join him until we sell the house. We are hoping it is soon but no one knows in this market. So, I could be in Florida for a month or the better part of a year.
  20. I am very interested in reading any replies. We are moving to Alabama as soon as we sell our house and I can not afford to pay the fees for both states. It's a shame you can not prorate or transfer your fees. :(
  21. Yes, we are at Eglin for right now. My dh leaves for Maxwell AFB in July but it looks like we will be staying here because of the housing market. :(
  22. Does anyone have a current discount code or coupon code for cbd.com (christian bookstore.com)? I need to place an order for some of this summer's books and it would really help to have a little discount. :)
