  2. We treat them as 2 different subjects. I do not try to line them up, I just assign a certain amount from each every day. I have had 3 go through this way and it has worked well. HTH,

  4. We have been using it for a little over three years. I began when my oldest 2 were 6 + 7 years old. Since then I folded in my 3rd child at about age 6. The children love the selections. I feel it is a great mix of silly and serious. We are currently in Level 3 and learning "The Road Not Taken" by Frost. It is fun, quick to implement, and easy to take along in the car. My children have a lot of great poetry under their belts and it has improved their vocabulary as well as their recitation. Every Friday we have recitations. The children pick a slip of paper (with one of the selections we've learned on it) out of a box and recite in front of the whole family. All in all, I have been very, very pleased with this curriculum and it has been well worth the money for our family.
  5. Although I did use aspects of the workbooks (I had 2 students working at slightly different levels), we mostly focused on the imitatative writing. We substituted some grammar, such as diagramming some of the more complicated sentences, and did a lot of dictionary and thesaurus work. The 'big picture' is the strength of the program, IMO. The progymnasmata is a great step-by-step approach to solid writing skills. Many people have used the program successfully without the workbooks, so I think you'll be fine meeting your son where he is and working on the skills that will make him a better writer. Good luck.

  7. but there are probably better options for you that are closer. We are only 15 minutes away, so it works well for us. Enjoy your trip!
  8. Hi, I'm Nancy. I have been a sporadic poster on the WTM boards for 6 years. I am formerly of CT, now living in the L.A. area for almost 2 years. Since joining the Well Trained Sparks I don't get here too often, but still enjoy the wealth on info. found here. I have 5dc (11, 9, 7, 4, 1) and have homeschooled since the beginning. I have a bachelors in music education and am a flute player, although I have not made too much time for it lately. My husband is an accomplished pianist and a wonderful composer who is currently trying to break into the film industry (hence the move.) I enjoy studying the Bible (currently sitting under the teaching of John MacArthur - wow!), decorating my new home, and watching movies with my family. Thanks for all the info. I have received here in the last few years! You guys are awesome.

  10. It sounds as though things are going great for all of you. Congrats!
  11. Firstly, it's a mindset. Homeschooling is my job. It is a big responsibility. One that I won't get to do over if I do an unsatisfactory job. I post weekly assignment lists for all of my children on the wall. Things get crossed off as they get completed. They are in plain view for dh and anyone else who walks in, so I want things to get crossed off. Ask your dh to keep you accountable. Also, keep rules for yourself. Turn off the ringer on the phone during certain hours. Wait until the afternoon to turn on the computer. Set a time to go grocery shopping, and plan accordingly so you won't have to return until the next scheduled time. Try to remove all the things that tempt you to "piddle" away time. We also set goals for ourselves if all the work for the day gets done....play a board game together, a trip to the park, XBox, going for ice cream. This will help everybody want to get the work done efficiently. HTH,
  12. Tanya and I are trying to resurrect the old group over at Sparkpeople. We'd love to have some more support in the group. So, if you're interested, head on over. :) Well-Trained Sparks I'm not sure how to link directly to the group because it's private. But hopefully we'll see some of you over there!
  13. Keep in mind it's only 11:19AM here in CA :) *exercised *2 loads laundry *wrote 3 thank-you's *sent pics of the kids to my grandma *about to plan school for next week I am glad you posted this on a day where I WAS being productive, Nan! :D
  14. YES! This has been our experience as well. I felt the need to have them in 5A, but, in hindsight, I would probably have gotten the one that teaches the bar diagrams (3A?) It would have helped my stress level!
  15. We have used both, and enjoyed/learned a lot with both. I have decided to continue with FLL3 this year because my third child LOVED FLL 1+2. But my older 2 did R&S3 before FLL3 was out and learned/retained much. If you like the scripted approach FLL is a good bet. If your child prefers a more independent/less scripted approach, R&S will be a good fit. But honestly, they are both very thorough, solid programs. HTH,
