  1. I swear the behavioral problems (attention span, emotion highs and lows amongst others) have decreased but how in the world do you explain that to dad and grandmas and neighbors who think you are crazy? We havent tried sugar elimination yet... Also, after a while my DS who ate literally every 30 to 40 minutes started eating 3 meals and 2 snacks! What a blessing! We have a great crepe recipe that has replaced the bread in PBandJs, we have a wheat grinder that will also grind rice and so we have some great muffin recipes... and are eating more fruits and veggies (gasp!). Fritos are not healthy but a great treat, taquitos are GF/CF and are easy snack food, rice noodles and speghetti sauce a major favorite.. email me if you are interested in recipes... it really is trial and error though. adamlise@comcast.net
  2. Mostly Cle Elum and Ellensburg area really... I am looking for some farms -- fruit farms in that general area that sell to the general public -- peaches, tomatoes and maybe apples. Maybe a nice small family farm to help support the local economy (gasp!). I am looking for them cheap (50 cents a pound or less). I can even pick the fruit, bring my own boxes whatever. The prices on this side of the mountains are so elevated and silly! "Only 1.49 a pound for Yakima peaches".. I realize gas is up but I was thinking I could drive out there, stop off at a favorite water slide and call it a "vacation". I realize this is a long shot. Thanks for the help.
  3. Is this even the right area for this? I am 5 weeks into this new diet for my ds8, and the results are amazing! We have had 1.5 major meltdowns in the last 5 weeks instead of 2 every week! I never even knew his stomach hurt until he told me a few weeks ago! He also told me he has more energy! This is good motivation which I need. I feel like kicking something most of the time because each and every meal is labor instinsive and takes 30 minutes or more to make and involves lots of dishes. He HATES oatmeal and that really is tradical. Although we are having a great time with new recipes I am one of those "can of cream of mushroom soup and tons of cheese" cooking people. Is there any convenience food out there besides applesauce, cornflakes and raisins? My biggest concern is the family reunion where we are flying to UT (5 hours on peanuts anyone??) and staying at someones house. I am aiming for 2 out of 3 meals but I still see myself making chicken salad or pasta salad everyday instead of chatting with Grams! And then there is the Disney trip... Any tips for grab and go? Thanks!
  4. I DID search on the forum and found a link for the 2-lined paper that HWT uses at startwrite but it appears that it has gone away. Does anyone know where to get an electronic copy? I simply want to make my own worksheets and the real paper wont scan nor will it copy because it is so light. Thanks
  5. We use Spelling power for both DS8 and DS6 and like the idea of it but I am trying to make it more managable. Any ideas? My thought was to do: Mon -- pretest Tue -- tracing words in ?? Wed -- writing sentences Thur -- ??? Friday final test There are lots of holes I know! My kids need that tactile feeling but what do you use? I would like something that is not messy nor smelly (shaving cream), and that is reuseable -- like sand except then I will have sand all over tartation! We have used pudding but again I will not be able to devote such time this year. Also, my DS6 is definately independent workbook type learner so I may just make up pages -- anybody else been down this road? thanks WTMers
  6. I LOVE it. 8 on 8-8! I have a friend getting married on that day and they decided to do it at 0800 hours (08-08-08 at 08!) Their mothers are ready to kill 'em :) Perhaps there can be some type of crazy party in the morning?
  7. and actually brag a lot! Home schooling is working today... I am a sucess :) My DS5's math work book got a rip in it and so could not use it anymore (don't ask). We went to Barnes and Noble to get a new one -- not only did they not have the one I wanted but my gift card did not work! I got 2 books for both boys anyways. They spent the last 2 hours (!) doing their math! My perfectionist isn't worry about the small mistakes -- he just wants to get to the next page! They declined a bike trip to the park, they declined a round of UNO games. Hoorray for miracles! I am so excited that they are so into it. New workbooks every week next year I guess... Thanks for celebrating with me.
  8. 2 things -- I am looking for easy-do-it-yourself earth science -- basically the 2nd year of the 4 years. They are for DS 8 and DS 6 who are in "1st and 2nd" grade. Volcanos and dinosaurs -- this is what we are excited about! This past year I thought I would read a bunch of books on animals and the human body but I have completely busted that theory... except for DS 8 broke his femur and we talked about how bones should not break! :) DS6 LOVES workbooks and I can easily make workbooks oral for DS8 but it should be something with out a lot of teacher-prep time. :D Also, despite the fact that we are christian, I would prefer it not to be...Any ideas? Also, any good books on nutrition? Kids want to know about proteins, and carbs and what makes a heathy body -- and I am dropping the ball on this opportunity... thanks for the help!
  9. I can only offer hugs really but this is similar to my son. I am not asking for accomadations when I put him in half day next year -- just waiting for that "call" from the priniciple : ) I do want to say that my ped. gave me an alternitive diagnoise of hyper-lexia. Highly intelligent, above really in most areas, slightly social but definately caring the autisic problems (frustration, non-compliant). Look it up. It may sound like less work for the schools because it is not "autism" which is a hot word these days. Also, we are seeing a naturopath doctor person to check for food alergys because sometimes non-compliant is really has to do with food. Have only made the appointment but we keeping our fingers crossed because I am saying the same thing of "how in the world..."
  10. This is small groups of kids with a SLP or other worker and they "learn" certain social skills. Has anyone tried this type of class? Has it helped? Any opinions before I blow a wad.... DS7 is somewhere between PDD-NOS and hyperlexic and a lot like me -- a big fat dork when it comes to dealing with people :) We really want to focus on unsaid social cues and dealing with frustration/stressful situations. Yes, I understand the irony of asking about social skills on a homeschooling board where we are trying to avoid some of the "socialization" that happens at school!
  11. Someone out there had a "theme" for a year or something and then focused on character traits. I am remember spefically "nobility" as the word -- was there more on this? Was it really a book.... or am I just loosing it... thought perhaps it was a good summer idea thanks
  12. Someone out there recommended "calm my anxious heart" by Linda Dillow -- whoever did, thank you. I am forever changed and not so anxious about my friend dying at 39 and leaving babies behind and not so anxious about my troubled DS and a million other things. Its always funny to realize that you are not on the path you really thought you were on... I am starting the 12 week program and am excited! Thanks again!
  13. My DS 7 -- to be in "second grade" but is between 3rd and 4th grade reading levels LOVED them! We do read them together because there are new words (vocab time!) and some of the concepts (time period) are a little new. We have read King Arthur and Robin Hood and I have read Notre Dame and Tom Sawyer :). They are well written, true to the basic story and simplifys the language without using simple language (does that make sense). Also, In ture classic ideals it gives the kid the idea that Classic Books are not scary and hard -- the are grand adventures! The only thing so far that I did not appreciate is in Robin Hood, Maid Marian is an equal partner to Robin Hood and plays a big part than I have ever heard of, but it is written by a woman AND they are so many verisions of the story --- who cares. DS7 did not pick up on any of the above complaint so it must be me...
  14. So what can a 5 almost (3 weeks and counting) 6 year old do in the way of clean-up? DS dumped on purpose a box containing 400 to 500 lego pieces (small). I say he can clean it up but I am locked in a 1.5 hour battle right now! I even read Winnie-the-pooh for 30 minutes to make it pleasent, but he would just sit and sniffle and then comment how the book isn't like the movie. AND his brother and I were cleaning up other parts of the playroom at the same time before story time. Which leads me to say thanks to y'all because it is calming coming to the board and just even typing without getting any response, and I really enjoy sharing your lifes and adventures in homeschooling... crazy as they may seem : )
  15. I am fairly new to posting -- heck, it took me almost 2 months to figure out the whole user name thing :) And I work in computer support... HAH! I am not always able to post replys and I am wondering why? Like I cannot post a reply but here I am making a new thread. Is it because I am new and unknown member (add music here) or is it just one of those things that is weird. Thanks for the help.
  16. I really appreciate the last post -- it is answering a lot of questions. I think have a border-line aspie, which makes it more frustrating. I was also looking at I believe is the Fengold or Feingold diet. Anybody have experience? Is there a way to try it out for a week or two before spending 85 bucks on it?
  17. My DS 7 and DS 5 take turns cleaning every night before bedtime. Wednesday my day :) I splurged on some of those throw away wipes -- 1 wipe for the counter and 1 wipe for the toilet. Put toothbrushed and toothpaste away, make sure there is no garbage. It has helped a lot. It is also funny to note DS 7's comment -- "Mom, is that yellow stuff around the toilet pee? Thats gross!" Exactly.
  18. I realize I am new to this board -- I was looking for austic links -- but I want to send my hugs and prayers. I have had diabetes for almost 25 years (I was 5) and I will say my mother is an angel. Her positive attitude and patience went a long way in helping me. Also, diabetes is classified as a disability in the sense that schools and places of work CAN NOT discrimate against the person due to their diabetes. I do not believe it is a special need where the government/schools will help to pay for any services. Although my mother did insist the school provide fresh fruit for lunch (HAH - now it is always there) and insisted that my teachers made time for snack time. Of course with everyhting else, homeschooling is the best! It is information overload for a while but things will level off. Things have improved so much in the last 25 years and I believe the next will be even more. I use to have to color match manually to get a bloodsugar range! Email if you would like pointers that have helped me.
