  1. Congrats and Hugs! :grouphug: It's a wild ride, isn't it?
  2. Yes --- it is there now. It most definitely wasn't there when I was looking at the page before. I triple checked!
  3. I dunno. There's a huge wildfire in Canada - people are being evacuated, homes lost, people putting their lives on the line to help. Not a peep on your front page? You lead with donors *not* donating to Trump? That's like, a negative action. There's something not happening - that's your lead? So done.... What's everyone's one stop shop online for news headlines?
  4. :iagree: I hope all goes well for your daughter, luckymama!
  5. Dropped him off in the pouring rain. :o/ Our high school is so awesome and accommodating to homeschoolers. We are very lucky! They hold all their AP exams at a local college, and there was the head guidance counselor, holding the door open and waiting to shake ds's hand on the way in. My heart overflows with gratitude. DS is hoping for a 4... banking on a 3... but we'll see. I think only the top 8% get a 5 now. (FRQs - please be familiar!) He is taking the SAT II in June... if the prep goes smoothly. But that's the plan this morning. Good luck testers and parents!
  6. Oooh... great site! I believe you can download the book from his site for free, no?
  7. We have that book and my girls liked it! I just picked it off the shelf and plopped it on my son's desk, thanks to you. I have never touched calculus ever, so I have no personal experience. :oP It's coming, though! I can see it heading my way! :) I am going to start with this one: http://www.amazon.com/Calculus-Young-People-Ages-Yes/dp/0977949303
  8. 24 hours from now, the AP Chem exam will be a done deal, here in the east. It has been a steep learning curve for this kid, but I think he's finally enjoying the rigor. (I've been wondering this entire year where he has been our whole homeschooling journey.... asleep? Just.... huh. Have you met your sisters? But hey, we're there now.) He is seeing that it gets more fun and more relevant the more you dive down deep. In the words of Ms. Stewart, "It's a Good Thing." As others have said, at this point, it's a win in my book, no matter the score on 'The Exam'. Best to everyone! See you on the flipside!
  9. I love, love, love this! Paper flowers, even better! https://www.pinterest.com/superflash/paper-flower-tutorials-pics/
  10. If I am not mistaken, you need 24 credits by the time you graduate from college ... not before you start. IOW, you need it to get out, not get in. I'll do some research and see what I can find.
  11. My ds is taking his first AP Exams this year: Chem and EngLang. Lots of studying going on right now!
  12. (((Dot)))) - I hope he feels better soon. So many viruses going around right now! My dd has been sick all week, too... and she had two midterm exams, a paper, and a CS project due this week. :( Bad timing. There's been news all week about the norovirus at UR, too. Stress and close living quarters don't play well. :( ETA: Other than being really sick in a busy week, things have been going well for dd #2. She is overloaded by one class, but she's hanging in. She's loving the TKD club team and hopes to start competing on the sport team next year. (That would mean weekends away for tourneys, so she didn't want to jump in that far freshman year.) She has a beautiful single room on the top floor of Hogwarts castle, and her floormates have been wonderful. She got in with a small group of kids for rooming next year and they lucked into the first slot lottery pick, so her space next year is great, too. Eating vegan has been interesting, but OK so far. Next year I think the dining options will improve as far as that goes. She opted to take the first class of a liberal arts distribution this semester and loves every bit of it... it's an English class: Shakespeare in the 20th and 21st centuries. They have seen some interesting adaptations, for sure. Today she had a job interview to be an assistant for the 'summer reunion' - basically 5 days of alums coming back to campus for some sun and fun. :) I hope she gets it - it's so nice to see your campus in a different way, when you are not freezing cold and nose to the grindstone. This summer, she's coming home, working at the library, hopefully taking a photography course that she has been dying to take at the local CC (which will fulfill a liberal arts distribution requirement. yay!), and getting her driver's license!! She'd really like to find a MatSci lab to tag around at, too. She's looking for that now. DD#1 has been enjoying every. single. minute. of her year away in Spain. I can't believe she'll be a senior when she gets back. That flew by!
  13. I wonder if clep would count toward the 24 credits..... our cc offers them for $30. Another rabbit trail of a NYS homeschool mother's mind ... when my daughter started dual enrollment at the CC they automatically awarded alll of her AP credit. So --- Calc BC, Physics, AP Eng Lang, American Govt, Bio, etc.... right there she's practically at the 24. If we had planned the subjects correctly, couldn't we just have wrapped up the required credits right there? And if so, why don't AP exams count like the Regent's Exams? just wondering out loud.... we have a new super this year. :op
  14. I was just on my dd's campus this weekend, and I swear, it was like the girls had dragged out all the clothes we left behind in the 80's. All the rayon. All the colors. All the cabbage roses. All the high waisted jeans. All the duck boots! Next up: Penny loafers, slouchy socks, and two polo collars turned up. After that, guess what folks? The future/past is grunge! I am sticking with my 'uniform' - black skinny jeans and a black or grey cotton long sleeve tee with a neutral cotton cardi over the top if needed. Never goes out of style. :) Bonus: I can dye it all every once in a while to freshen it up!
  15. We were a dance family for a looong time. :) It really depends on the competition. There are some that are more 'participatory-award-like' than others. If you go to more than one a year you might be able to start sussing out which ones have stiffer competition. Dd's studio usually did three or four a year, and there were some at which they really felt like they won something if they won, and others that were just for the sake of having a performance opportunity and seeing what other people were doing. A big part of the fun was watching what the other studios had going on for inspiration (or not. ). Like pp's have said, at most of the events every group took home some kind of award, but the girls knew if it was a consolation prize or not.
  16. I have been in the habit of making Apple/Carrot/Flax muffins - one batch makes about 2 dozen, and eating two a day (they are pretty small) has had a *very* beneficial effect in this dept. When I don't have them on hand, it's not terrible, but I notice the difference. They are super healthy and have only a small amount of date sugar in them. (IOW, dates.) I have to leave (why am I on the board??!?) right now, but I can type out the recipe when I get in if anyone is interested.
  17. The Guaranteed Transfer offer from Cornell has been around for a few years. The answer from Brandon here sums it up.
  18. Someone finally mentioned Little Women, which is my #1 memorable cry. I am so happy to know that so many of you have Little Match Girl on your list... I read that story over and over again as a child... I can only imagine to *make* myself cry, because why else would I have done it? I still have the tear-stained book. In agreement with everyone who said Harry Potter (all of them...), Charlotte's Web, and every other read aloud we have ever done. Dot said it... I usually hand it off to a kid at that point. They know me and are not surprised.
  19. I like Creekland's answer a lot. :) For me, life is about remembering to: Relieve suffering in the world. Be amazed and awestruck at my luck to have appeared here - after the untold eons of existence of the universe that it took to get to a place that life existed at all on earth, and then the evolution of man, and then the development of civilizations, and then the generations of my own family that led to my birth - at this time and place. Make the very best of the opportunity to love my family and my fellow man, because it is fleeting. Be grateful for everything to the best of my ability.
  20. RIT gapped us a LOT when Cornell and UR were right at our EFC. My dd would have seriously considered going there if the money had been closer, but it was just not even close. (She was even awarded the Pres Scholarship.....) I called the FinAid office and was basically told that the offer was the offer.... but then (when school had already started and she was enrolled somewhere else) met a person that works in the FinAid office who said that I should have insisted on going further up the chain. I don't think dd is sorry now, because she's happy where she is, but at the time it was puzzling. So, if your daughter is really keen on RIT, keep calling until you get a satisfactory response. IOW... don't take the first no as the final answer!
  21. This is interesting. In NY, there are a few ways to achieve HS equivalency, TASC test (formerly the GED), letter from superintendent, 5 particular regent's exams, and 24 particular credits from a college, etc... The 24 credits from a college can be done concurrently with collegiate studies, so even if a NY kid enters a state school without a hs diploma, as long as those 24 credits are completed prior to college graduation, (s)he is considered a high school graduate, too. There's wording here in section C2: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/ocue/ceomemos/05/homeinstruction.htm I don't know how Adelphi deals with this, though --- since it is private. Sometimes people in admissions offices need to be informed about the regs - perhaps this is the situation at Adelphi?
  22. Totally agreeing with Janice about the 'big rock' math metaphor, too. Our whole goal along the way was to keep doors open... chugging along in math is the best way to do that. I am finding that out now for myself. :) The second I quit math after trig, a million options for a future career silently shriveled up and died. I am working hard now to revive them. If nothing else, at least I can say that my kids had a good math foundation, and for that I am truly grateful. Almost everything I would hope to go back to school for at this point requires much more math than I ever took. I am enjoying help from my kids while I catch up!! This time around, I am highly motivated. I'd say the most important thing to do is find a rigorous math program that your kid enjoys and won't burn out on. Then find enjoyable challenges outside of the classroom - AoPS happened to fit the bill here. There is also a great math circle in our town, and summer things at local unis. The AMC/AIME/Olympiad route is exciting and stimulating for some kids.
  23. My dds are both engineering undergrads. They did AoPS for math (classes, because I was a music major that didn't have math past high school....), AP sciences and Calc through PAHomeschoolers, and dd2 took Multi and Chem at the local CC senior year because she wanted to. They self-studied for a couple of humanities AP tests and did well. They also had various experiences in the community - STEM experiences at the local Unis, physics and astronomy camps and volunteering, jobs, black belts in TKD, various music experiences, and internships. They had strong standardized test scores. I don't think it's mandatory for kids to have dual enrollment (dd#1 didn't really have anything relevant in dual enrollment), but it is important to have strong standardized test scores (some schools require SAT IIs), good recommendations (professor, mentor, boss, whatever...), and good dual enrollment grades if classes are taken. But there will always be the occasional outlier. :) A total picture of academic strength and intellectual curiosity will be more important than one specific type of class or activity vs. another. We used our own transcript. If you want to pm me your e-mail addy I can send you a scrubbed version. Good Luck! Your plan sounds strong already!
