  1. I'm thinking about having my oldest do this for the first time. I have a few questions... I don't see a link to register on their website. Where do I register for this? If you've taken the test in he past, are there certain materials that you found helpful to prepare? Did you order any materials from their website? My oldest is 4th grade so she will only be taking the basic test. But I wanted to be able to study with her and help her prepare. Anything else I should know??
  2. My cytotec induction caused one massive contraction that would not end. My active labor was less than an hour. The pain was unbearable. I was induced for borderline preeclampsia and I ended up having a placental abruption. Inductions are awful. Cytotec is probably not a good option for me ever again. But I'm so sorry that you're going through this. My heart hurts for you! Big hugs. Facing an induction even in better circumstances is overwhelming but in your case...it would be so challenging.
  3. I've been watching for them as well but haven't seen any!
  4. My daughter sounds much like yours. She loves literature, writing, and history. She doesn't love math but she's just breezing through Right Start E and doing very well. I don't want her to get bored so I want her to be challenged. But I think AoPS will be way too tough. I plan to try Jousting Armadillos and other books in the series. Possibly Jacobs Algebra. Maybe Jacobs geometry. That's my tentative plan.
  5. Perfect! Thanks! I ordered the WoC Astronomy book to go with it. We'll try it and see. We have Magic School Bus and I might get some additional books to add to the units. I'm hoping we can have a streamlined science semester since we've been rather lazy with science this fall semester.
  6. I'm using some CAP books. We are doing Narrative right now. We will also use Treasured Conversations. My dd finished WWE 3 in 3rd grade and then did CAP Fable. We are doing Narrative 1 and 2 this year and hopefully TC. We will do a few more CAP books next year for 5th and then try WWS in 6th.
  7. Yes. I always do this. Still no luck. I'll try again tonight. Maybe in a different browser. I wonder if that will help.
  8. Does the For Sale board still work? I've been trying to post on the board but it keeps telling me I have to have at least 1 post on the forum to be able to do this. I have tons of posts and have been a member for years so I'm a little confused.....Does it work for everyone else? Anyway, I have a complete Nancy Larson Science 2 kit (supplies, teacher's manual, student pack) that is unopened in the box. So it is brand new! I'm selling it for $225 which includes shipping. If you're interested send me a PM.
  9. I use Alba brand. Sounds great and no sulfates or parabens. Their conditioner is good too. My kids use Kiss My Face brand and they like that.
  10. The CD does sound annoying. I think I'll plan a printing day and get it all over with and create a notebook. I had planned for this class to be about 1 semester so I think the length will work. I was hoping it would be a spine and we could add extra books and the Wonders of Creation book for extra info. I'm hoping that this will be enough. I'll keep looking for additional texts to add in. Did you find something you liked better? We've tried Apologia (too wordy and one topic all year is boring) and Science in the Beginning (so many experiments!). I've also looked at RSO but the lessons seem so short. And we've also tried RS4K but it doesn't seem super thorough either.
  11. It's a secret! I still hope to use it...someday....maybe...hopefully. But my one boy is Jaxon. We each have an X in our name 😊
  12. Aww congrats! We had already agreed on a boys name but learned on Thursday that we didn't need it! So now we are very stuck. Have you picked a middle name?
  13. I guess I should give the names of my other kids as a starting point. Jaylyn Ellie Adley Cora So the names we chose are a little bit unique but not too unusual. We never use family names so other than having two syllables we don't have many rules.
  14. I like that name. It was the name of my childhood dog. I adored her.
  15. I haven't done much science with my 4th grader this fall semester. She's not my science kiddo and prefers literature and writing and foreign languages (Latin and Spanish). So we focused on those things a lot this semester. But I need to add in more science next semester and over the summer. I'm considering Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space (because she requested some astronomy as part of her studies). I was looking for something easy to use without too many experiments. Short, bite-sized lessons would be great. I do plan to beef up our study with library books and possibly a book like Wonders of Creation Astronomy. Christian content is fine and we are YE so I think both of these options would work in that regard. Any thoughts about this science? Any experience? Pros, cons, or suggestions for additional resources? I tried to search the forum but I didn't come up with much (even using Google).
  16. Thanks everyone! We just learned that we are having another girl. I'm excited but I have zero name ideas! UGH! I may have to get ideas from everyone here. Our last name is 3 syllables and starts with H and ends with an "er" sound. It's very very German. All of our other kids have 2 syllable first names. They start with J, A, C, and E so those letters are out for the beginning of this name. This is tricky!
  17. Donate them or give them away! Yuck! We are allergic. If we weren't I'd make guac and freeze or or make seven layer dip. Or other Mexican food things and freeze them. However I don't like avocado so the fact that my kiddo is allergic has never bothered me. I never bought them before the diagnosis. My extended family loves them so I guess I would give the avocados to them.
  18. We've built as well. I learned that every little thing is an upgrade it seemed like. Ugh. And it always takes longer than they say. And I went out to the site every few days to check on things. I'm glad I did because they framed out the fireplace wrong twice. So glad I caught it before they added the tiles and mantle around it. Our house was fairly simple and basic but everything ended up costing more than we originally estimated. It was stressful. But in the end I loved our house!
  19. My girls (ages 9 and 6) love art kits like the Djeco brand. They also love paint by number, latch hook rugs, needlepoint kits, and rainbow loom (oh how I hate those little bands!). Sewing machine was a big hit last year. Other art kit brands that they like are Creativity for Kids, Klutz, and Alex. My littler girls (aged 3 and 4) like sticker mosaic kits and usborne sticker books (the dolly dressing ones) All like Lego, Playmobil, and Calico Critters My son likes foam swords, nerf guns, and those bow and arrow things that shoot foam arrows. He also likes those science experiment kits. All my kids love to receive gift cards to download audiobooks on their iPods. Those iPods were the best investment ever! They listen to books during room time or while they do chores.
  20. I babysat starting when I was about 12. As I was older I worked as a nanny during the summers. I made pretty good money doing this. At 16 or 17 I worked part time in a doctor's office filing paperwork and scheduling appointments. I was homeschooled so I could work for a few hours during the day several days per week.
  21. I'm so sorry! We've been through this and it was so scary. My hubby used to work for a bank that was bought out by a bank in another state. He was a manager and they replaced most of the management team with their people. They laid him off on our daughter's first birthday just one month before we were set to close on our new house. I thought we would die! However, he did find another job and it turned out to be a better fit for him with more opportunity for advancement. But at the time it was terrifying since I wasn't working and we were on a single income. Praying for peace for you and a wonderful new job for him!
  22. We have these :001_smile: I had to look up the Rescuers but once I saw the cover picture I realized that my mom got these for my daughter a few months ago. We have very full bookshelves....and not that we need more books but I can't help myself!
  23. So when we moved into our new house we hired an electrician to do some work in our house. We had a fixture added to a room where there were no ceiling lights and had some of the fixtures changed out to recessed cans. So they ran some wiring, added fans, added can lights and lots of things. One of the things they did was to put all the fans/lights on dual switches meaning that there is one switch for the light and one for the fan (that way I don't have to pull on the chain because I'm too short to reach them). Anyway, the one in our bedroom was put on a dimmer switch so I can adjust the fan speed with one switch and then adjust the brightness of the light with the other switch. It suddenly stopped working correctly. Now if I try to turn the light up any higher than halfway the switch shorts out and the light goes off completely. I can't turn the light up more than halfway at any time. I called them back to come fix it because in my mind there was something wrong with the switch and it should still be working so they needed to come fix the problem. The tech can out and worked for about 30 minutes. He came down and told me that the fan was going bad and I had to replace the entire fixture - fan and lighting and that they would come out and put a new fan in after I chose one. He simply said something about the lighting part on the fan had gone bad. I'm not an electrician at all and this didn't make sense to me. The light worked on the highest setting before they put in the dimmer switch. Only a few weeks after the dimming switch was added my light started shorting out. So in my mind it didn't make sense that my entire fixture suddenly went "bad" after they did work to it. So he said he would have to charge me a service charge for coming out since the issue was on my end and not related to the work they had done. Ummm, not what I was expecting at all! I was initially told they would just come out and fix the switch since that was likely causing the problem. He told me the service charge was $75 which seems pretty typical for a service charge where I live. Then he said there was an additional $50 charge "for his time." I nearly choked. I have never paid for a service call plus their time - for the record he was in my home for a max of 30 minutes. I paid the charge to get him out of my house and then I called my husband. He was not thrilled and called the owner of the company. He told my husband that this is normal and that the service charge is for the first 15 minutes they are in your home and then you pay for their time spent after that 30 minutes. Oh my goodness! Never again!!! Anyway, what would you have done? Is this typical? Also, this electrician was highly recommended (and I am happy with the other work that they did) and his daughter is in the American Heritage Girls troop where my daughters go. So I'm not trying to cause a huge problem but I felt that this was highly unfair. At no time was there mention of paying for time above and beyond the charge for the first 15 minutes of the service call. What kind of work can anyone get done in 15 minutes!? Obviously we won't use their company again but I just wanted to know if anyone else had an experience like this. It was totally unexpected on my part.
  24. Her younger brother has these on audio and loves them. She refuses to listen to them though. She's so girly that she is turned off by the covers. I'm still trying to convince her to give it a try but she's a little bit stubborn about what she reads and doesn't like to step out of her comfort zone. We're working on that during our read aloud times as I try to expose her to books that she likely wouldn't have chosen herself.
