  1. I recently picked up a used SOTW Activity book 2. It is the 2003 edition. Will I run into problems if I buy the revised version of the text? How much changed in the revised edition? Thanks!
  2. Two things made my last C better. I talked with the anesthesiaologist before about not using Versed. It is pretty standard before most surgery and really does a number on your memory. I wanted to clearly remember every detail of my daughter's birth and our first meeting. I'm also a big fan of Duramorph. The pain relief was fantastic and it lasts for the first day. It really made getting out of bed, nursing, and snuggling with my little one pain-free. After that, it was pretty easy to step down to less fun pain meds.
  3. We just got started with Primary Lentil science. I bought the complete kit and it wasn't so complete. After a lot of hunting, almost all the materials are gathered and it looks awesome. I think it is absolutely worth the cost and aggravation. My 7 and 4 year old are in love. I'm glad I read all the warnings about how time consuming set up is--I was prepared!
  4. We really like BFSU, but it does take me about twenty minutes a week to prep by reading and wrapping my brain around the material. I also think that the text is particularly awkward to teach from. If I spent the time to outline the section, it would probably make the lessons much easier to teach.
  5. My parents lived with us for a year while their house was being built and we really enjoyed it. Things that made it easier on us was figuring out a laundry schedule, having an extra fridge, and having our "own" living room. My kids loved seeing so much of their grandparents and having more adults around made it easier for me to run errands without kids. Best of luck to you.
  6. I have great difficulty memorizing strings of numbers, but I have my library card number memorized. I live in fear of it changing.
  7. We started half-way through first for both programs. We do both daily and will probably finish by summer.
  8. Another thing to keep in mind is how much they change and grow during first grade. We did math, phonics, and handwriting for Kindergarten. At the start of first, we continued math, phonics, and handwriting. We also started history and science. When my son got far enough in phonics, we added spelling, language, and writing. After winter break, we were ready to tackle more. Daily reading, poetry, art, and bible were then added in. We are now doing quite a bit more than I ever expected, but the transitions have been painless. Slowly ramping up the breadth has worked well for us.
  9. We started the book in the new year and it has been a hit. The first grader enjoys the poems and has memorized five. The three year old has picked up two just by listening to us.
  10. This has worked well for us as well. Easy books increase my son's confidence and I help a bit with the more difficult books. As long as he is reading everyday, we continue to see progress.
  11. I still need to get SOTW 2 materials, but I found everything else. We just got a new printer and I'm looking forward to printing my first PDFs.
  12. We just finished 1B and I wrote out the problems on a lap sized white board. When my son gets the answer right, he can erase the problem. Writing on the whiteboard is still a big treat around here.
  13. My son is in first grade and we are over half-way through BFSU and loving it. I plan on using the second volume, but was wondering about pacing. Would BFSU 2 work for a second grader, or are there more advanced concepts that should wait until 3rd grade? I can't decide if we should slow down and supplement or keep going at our current pace.
  14. My mom was always reading and frequently took us to the library. I learned so much more by reading on my own than I ever learned in school.
  15. My son is 6.5 Piano, class once a week and practice daily Taekwondo and sparring, twice a week Artistic Pursuits, at least once a week Singapore 2b, one or two lessons a day, 4 days a week Life of Fred, at least once a week FLL, daily WWE, daily AAS 1, 1/2 a chapter a day, 5 days a week Read out loud, daily Books on CD in the car, more than I'd like ;) SOTW, twice a week BFSU, twice a week Telling God's Story, twice a week I'm hoping to add poetry memorization to the mix next week. I have a three year old and a nine month old, so I couldn't begin to tell you how long each subject or day takes. We start early in the morning and work it in around his siblings, speech, naps, nursing, and activities. So far, we are having fun and he is learning a ton.
  16. I feel the same. AP gets done at our house and my boys look forward to it.
  17. After reading so many recommendations on this board, I am strongly considering a Brother HL-2270DW for printing. I do most of my computing on my iPad and rarely touch my PC. Is there a way to print PDFs from my iPad to the Brother? It says it has wireless capabilities but the details are beyond my tech knowledge. Is there an ap that would make this work? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
  18. We worked through Apples and Butterflies the summer between K and first. My son enjoyed them and they were a lot of fun. Fred has increased his math enjoyment.
  19. We are in the midst of first grade. OPGTR and Explode the code for review Writing with Ease 1 First Language Lessons 1 All About Spelling 1 & 2 HWOT 2 Read alouds from the library Singapore Math and Life of Fred once a week Story of the World with a lot of library books BFSU and even more library books Artistic Pursuits K-3 book 1 Telling God's Story 1 It has been a fun year so far. The only curriculum that hasn't worked for us was Spelling Workout.
  20. We have a fantastic library system and I borrow as much as I can. I am usually borrowing four of five books for SOTW every week and the same for BFSU. It has saved a lot of money and enriched my curricula.
  21. My oldest works hard, but occasionally balks at having to do work. The challenging part for me is keeping my 3 year old son and nine month old daughter entertained. We are doing first grade and it feels like it takes all day. The actual lessons are manageable, but I need to stop to nurse, wipe, change diapers, clean up the mess that happened during math, and put away contraband. On the rough days, I remind myself that I am raising three kids and doing an additional job of homeschooling my oldest. At least, I think that is why I am so exhausted at nine o'clock! I love teaching my kids. Love it.
  22. We did well on eBay a couple of years ago. All the pieces went into lingerie bags on the top rack of the dishwasher and came out fine.
  23. I'm an Eclampsia survivor and I did not enjoy last night's episode. I wish I had seen spoilers because I would have watched something else.
  24. My oldest is a first grader and we are finishing Singapore 1b. I'm really happy with the program and can see it becoming increasingly easier for me to teach the next time around. How realistic is it that I'll be able to use the same text and instructor guide when my two youngers are in first grade? Are the workbooks likely to change in the next six years? If they revise the US Edition, would there be any advance warning (so I could buy ALL the workbooks)? Anyone else hoard a favorite curriculum?
