  1. I'm sorry. That would hurt my feelings too. I sometimes think Europeans travel more regularly than Americans. If I travel to one state in the US, I might not think to hop to the next state to see someone else. But in Europe, it was more routine to move between countries. Oddly enough, in or out of the EU didn't matter. And flights within Europe could be so cheap! It's a different style of travel, I think.
  2. This has me thinking. Thank you. It's easy to end up with an abstinence only approach to alcohol. I need to include some more information around here myself.
  3. I think it's ok! Those temperatures aren't that high. Yeah, that would be a fast wake up. 😳
  4. When I broke my ankle, I could still hobble around on it. It had a big bruise and swelled up. It was not a minor break. I wished I'd gotten it looked at sooner. I think you may need an xray.
  5. Actually, have you considered doing the AOPS Pre-Algebra? It covers the regular stuff, but in a very advanced, interesting way. It might slow him down and still be interesting/challenging.
  6. My 12yo ds is also quick at math. He's doing AOPS Intro to Algebra now. We set a timer for an hour per day. What he gets done, he gets done. I sit at the same table and keep him on task a bit, but he's getting better at that part (finally). We do math year-round, so I don't worry about finishing books in the school year window.
  7. My 4yo niece received a Hanukkah Harmonica this year. Not from me! 😁
  8. I'm sorry. That's a lot. It may not be workable for your situation, but #1, I'd be staying in a hotel. You've got to be able to leave for an hour long nap, and at night.
  9. I'm getting some greenies for the dog. I need to think of something for the cat. She's old and doesn't really play anymore. Maybe a better brush, something with soft silicone bristles.
  10. Well. That's a significantly ruder backstory than I anticipated. I'm sure most people who use it aren't going that far in their minds.
  11. Sometimes just taking a walk together can break up a group into smaller dynamics. One can stand up, slap one's full belly paunch, and say, "Wow, that was delicious. I need to walk a bit off before dessert? Who wants to see the sunset?" Even if only a few people take the opportunity to get a few minutes away, it can be a breather.
  12. I hate when I use a phrase, don't know what it means, and then have no one tell me! I think they should be glad you defined it for them. Now they can use it with understanding. Ha! I wonder if it felt rude to use a country to express no-where's-ville. Perhaps they suddenly felt it was insensitive or prejudicial, especially because they learned it flat, without humor.
  13. That Frontline episode was great! Very interesting, and led to a good discussion with Dd16 and DS12.
  14. We like Castle Panic and Forbidden Island.
  15. I appreciate this. We're going to watch it today during lunch. It's available on YouTube, too.
  16. Cooked, shredded chicken makes a really nice quesadilla if you put a little BBQ sauce and a little Frank's hot sauce in with the chicken and cheese.
  17. I love the Calvin and Hobbies angle. It's a great way to inspire thought without the weight of your fears for your own kid.
  18. Ok, I thought I must have missed some awful corporate misstep. Yes. I see a similar movement in some martial arts circles.
  19. What? What'd I miss?? I tried to Google and it did not help!
  20. I see different numbers on the NYT article than are currently on the Panera app nutritional information. I wonder if they reduced the size of the cups since the lawsuit. They might also be allowing for ice. There would be precedent for that kind of thing. It's still a LOT of caffeine. Here's what I'm seeing on the large cup description this morning.
  21. I have no expertise, just two kids that are slightly advanced. However, these are things that have played well here and I think get overlooked: Miquon math as a prequel to Beast; popular science trade books as read alouds and independent reads (Bill Bryson's book on the human body was great for dd at 14), and using a big, fat, coffee table book as a spine for a rich history study via the library. Ds loves reading the DK History of the World aligned with the DK Battles book and a ton of stuff from the library. I know it's classic WTM, but it's working.
