  1. I've been disapointed with Reading Eggs. The material is great and my sons enjoy it very much, too much. Basically we paid for the 2 memberships and my sons haven't been able to utilize it for almost 3 months. The last time they came out with their last map, my son finished it in a week. When I wrote and complained they offered me an extra 6 weeks if I provided proof of purchase (done online and they should have that info!) Either way does us know good till they complete a few more maps. On the positive side, the timing might be right for you, and hopefully they come out with new stuff soon and you wont have any "down" time like we are dealing with.
  2. Thanks everyone, your comments really helped me out. I will go ahead and order them, especially since the boys are usually working on math at the same time. -Di
  3. My sons are currently using Alpha with the starter blocks, they do enjoy using the blocks. What are the "completer blocks" for? I'm getting ready to order Beta next year and I'm trying to figure out if I need them, or if I can get by with what I have? Thanks, Di
  4. I really enjoyed your post, and couldn't have agreed with you more. I'm sort of a buddhist/wiccan gal myself and I don't readily advertise that little fact about myself, mainly because that is just one part of me, and I don't want to put people off about me on this board. I'm glad I found this board and everyone has been very helpful. Having the common interest of homeschooling our children is no small thing and I find everyone's point of veiw to be wonderful and helpful. I'm glad you were able to speak your conscience in an uncomfortable situation, I know how difficult that can be. :)
  5. I'm not a big fan of "forcing" little ones to be brave. If they have fears, I always try to talk to them about it and of course ease their fears if there is some way I can. If after trying all of the above and one of my boys is still terrified of something, I honor their feelings. I think its kind of cruel to force a child to stay in a situation where they are terrified.
  6. I still cringe over this one. I was about 7 months pregnant with my twin sons at the time. I was in a mad rush to get to an O.B. appointment and on my way out the door I grabbed a natural soda and a granola bar to tide me over. I set both items on the hood of my car. My neighbor was walking by after her morning jog and stopped to say hi. She kept looking at the top of my car and I had a moment of shame about the natural soda, because I hadn't given up soda entirely while pregnant. She left in a hurry and I didnt' think much about it since I had the appointment to get to. As I grabbed my snacks off the hood of my car, I realized much to my horror that I hadn't grabbed a soda, I had grabbed one of my husband's BEERS! I wanted to just die. No wonder she kept looking at it! Nothing like drinking and driving to your O.B. appointment while pregnant eh? My husband is fond of the story, I'm still mortified.
  7. Since you can't legally sell the raw milk and or products, it would be great if there was a resource that could help you link up with other farmers or like minded people to trade with. Kickin' it oldschool! Good luck, I'm a totally displaced suburbanite, looking to get to some property to have a cow of my own someday. And to keep my horse close to me as well. :)
  8. Oh my goodness, that thing is so cool and plush. I'd be hard-pressed to actually call it "camping" though, LOL, it's too luxurious! Although I can't really talk, for camping we use a pop-up tent trailer and I don't know if I could go back to tent camping now. Yurt camping is now on my to do list, thanks for sharing and have fun!
  9. LOL, I'm still anxiously awaiting mine as well. Enjoy lucky lady! :D
  10. Update: duh, I was looking in the catalog under "writing strategies" which is just a wee bit different than practicing manuscript writing. LOL I also called customer service and they pretty much said all I need are some student workbooks for the twins next year. :D
  11. Thank you ladies! I suspect that Mamabegood, is right and I don't need but half the stuff. I will call the company today and get more clarification on the products I mentioned. Hopefully to my pocketbook I can feel comfortable walking away with just student books.:)
  12. I've been planning on using this for writing and I'm trying to figure out from the catalog what I really need for 1st grade. It is more expensive than I had originally thought. Obviously I need the student edition, is the teacher's edition a must have as well? What are the Big Books? Not a lot of explanation about them in the catalog, seems a little excessive at $189.99 for 8 books that I'm unsure of. Also, do I need the transparency book at $64, seems high, is it something I can find elswhere at a reasonable price? Any experience and assistance is greatly appreciated. We didn't use this for K, so I'm completely in the dark about it all. :001_smile:
  13. What a fantastic idea for you and your gals! I think you have some great ideas already. There are some great homemade recipes for mud masks and scrubs using ingredients commonly found in the kitchen. Do a search online, if you can't find anything, I have a good book, just email me and I'll send a couple of recipes your way. Some decadent chocolates left on pillows in the evening would be fantastic. Also having tea time would be fun around 4 in the evening with some cookies. Now I want to join you! LOL
  14. :hurray: That is so wonderful, congratulations!
  15. we use a charter school and get $1800 a year, broken into 2 semester payments.
  16. yikes, so many red flags and for different reasons. He may be slightly innocent/or not as to what's going on, but he and you could still get hurt. On a personal note, my husband's boss "A" was brought up on sexual harrassment by a woman co-worker he considered a friend, my hubby thought of her that way as well. They often had lunches/dinners together in large groups. Oddly she was the one that was very inappropriate most of the time, bringing sexual humor into conversations etc.. One night they all ended up at a bar after dinner (out of town trip) everyone trickled off to bed, except for "A" and the woman. They were drunk and probably flirty, but nothing physical happened. Something must have been said that ticked her off though, maybe he propositioned her, not 100% positive. But she filed charges the next week. He was found not to be at fault by the company, she recanted, but it ruined him. She told everyone about the charges, even though she was later reprimanded about it, the damage was already done. He had to leave the company. He was no angel in this to be sure. But companies by law have to act immediately when someone whispers sexual harrassment, no matter what. We live in a court of opinions, you can't recover from that type of stuff. On a good note, I think this whole thing scared my hubby half to death to see how quickly it ruined his boss. While there was probably something to the harrasment claim, there doesn't always have to be, anyone can claim it, they still have to investigate and take some sort of action to cover their arse. Everyone's already given you some good advise and I hope you can talk to your hubby and get him to realize what bad could come of this. Maybe you should just send him this whole thread. Good luck,
  17. So, so funny!! You are a great story teller as well. oh my god!:lol: I was "touring" our gym for the first time last year. The manager pointed towards the ladies locker room so I could check them out, while hubby went into check out the guys' locker room. There are no actual "doors" on the locker rooms, just a well planned. rounded corner to the entrance. I walked down the hall and walked into what I assumed was the ladies entrance, only to discover that it was actually another entrance/exit for the men. I literally walked in and was confronted by a nekked man, toweling himself off after a shower. I just stood there, not really registering what I was seeing for a moment, and the poor man helplessly stared back, so shocked, didn't even think to cover with said towel. It was verrrry awkward and seemed to last an eternity. When I met up with my hubby, I told him about it and he just laughed hysterically, but I made us leave right away because I didn't want run into that poor man again. Luckily for my eyes he was pretty darned good-looking, and we do have some lovely, huge, but confusing locker rooms! :001_smile:
  18. That one looks really terrific, thanks for the link! bumping to see if there are any more suggestions.
  19. I couldn't have said this any better. I certainly don't feel or act superior because I homeschool, but I've received a lot of reactions that make me think that people are defensive of themselves for using ps. I usually don't say anything about it unless directly asked. With people close to me, family and close friends, they either can accept it or reject it and keep it to themselves. I don't have the time or energy to deal with any negativity on the subject. I'm still sort of finding my path with this, just teaching K so far, so sometimes I'm sure I'm a bit defensive about it. As a matter of fact, my mom was visiting last month and witnessed some horrendous outbursts from one of my sons while we were schooling. She was quick to imply it was because of homeschooling, that he would learn better if someone else was teaching him. I kindly told her I appreciated her view point, but at this moment I only needed her support. She did things differently and I respect that, she needs to show me the same respect. It's not like I just woke up one day and thought to myself "hey, lets give homeschooling a whirl" I debated for a year and had to convince hubby on the subject as well.
  20. We would love to take a telescope camping with us this summer. We live in the burbs, so the best vewing would be away from home. This being said, I would like it to pack up and travel easily and not be too difficult to set up. What should I look for and avoid? Any tips and recs are appreciated!
  21. helloooo! I'm in Tracy, about an hour south of Sac or about and hour east of San Fran!
  22. We will be doing a little bit of Lang. Arts and Math, but mainly focusing on reading, reading, reading. My boys just finished K and we are just getting into chapter books (well, I'm reading chapter books to them!) and they will be exploring some BOB books as well to practice with. I really just want them to love reading like I do. One of the twins is really close to reading on his own and the other is a few steps behind. So I'm working on finding a balance of making it fun and not pushing too hard. They were very late talkers, had that "twinspeak" language so I can tell they are close, but not quite ready. It's an exciting time though. :D -Di
  23. Thank you so much for all the information ladies, I have a lot to look into now for my son. I will definately have to research a little deeper to find out what will help him the most. Some of the programs are pretty pricey, so I'll look before I leap. Thanks again, Di
  24. My son has never been officially evaluated for this, but I'm very certain it is a big issue for him. We actually thought he had poor hearing at first, and had him tested, but his "hearing" is excellent. Some of his obvious symptoms are: ~longer response time to any posed question ~many times acts confused when I talk to him, doesn't seem to understand the words coming out of my mouth. ~easily frustrated and distracted by noise. ~has trouble doing anything requiring multiple steps. Forgets steps past one or two completely. I've heard there are programs that might help like Earobics, are there any others? Any advice is appreciated. On a side note, if there are any other programs worthy, could you list their full title, I"m still struggling with the abbrieviations here. Thanks, Di
