  1. My son will be transitioning to Saxon next year after completing CLE 600s and most likely 702-705. As well as completing Math Mammoth 6. He will be in 7th grade next year. He is a strong math student and I am struggling to determine whether he should go into Algebra 1/2 or Algebra 1. He took the placement test and placed into Alg. 1. But I am not sure it makes sense to do Alg. 1 in 7th grade. However, I am afraid he will have too much review with Alg. 1/2 and then a great deal of review again in Alg. 1 the next year. Anyone who has had a similar experience, or knows the Saxon levels well, I would love your thoughts.
  2. Thanks so much for all the great ideas - I think some of these should work..:001_smile:
  3. This fall 4 families will be doing Apologia Elementary Anatomy with our kids gr. 3 and up. However, we would like to try something else for the younger kids (grades 1 & 2) as the text is too much for them right now. We do not need the topics to all be exactly the same, but the curriculum should be easy to implement with little planning - and somewhat hands-on and engaging for 4 rather active kids. We meet 1x/week for about 90 minutes. But some reading could be done at home (minimal). Any great suggestions out there?
  4. :iagree: I will have my youngest use the pages - but my older 2 are using notebooks. I bought the printed versions.
  5. any new info on when that will be? last i heard was December..
  6. Same for me - I got a ton at Walgreen's for our science co-op
  7. Thanks for the feedback about the readers and read-alouds - I was pretty certain they would be amazing!! I am tempted to purchase the IG and books, or just the books, and dabble with it slowly, while still having ds11 work through MOH2 (his preference when asked was to study Middle Ages)... What do most past users think of the Explorer pages and World Book CD-Rom?
  8. CLE Math/MM, CLE LA, AAS 1&2, WWE/WWS, WP Animals, MOH2, Lively Latin, Apologia Anatomy, Trail Guide to World Geo....feeling a little overwhelmed...aah!!!
  9. I am trying to decide on curriculum for my ds11 (6th) for next year. My plan was for him to do MOH2 along with readers (Middle Ages). We enjoyed MOH1 last year, but he did much of it independently. I keep being drawn to Sonlight's Core F Eastern Hemisphere program, but am fairly sure it will be too much for my younger 2, thus, ds11 will end up working on it mostly on his own. Does Core 5 lend itself to that or would that be too difficult? My hope would be to overlap with my younger 2 some with the read-alouds and mission focus. I have not been able to find many reviews on here for Core F/5. Can you share with me your experiences with it and what you and your kids liked or did not like about it? Thanks!!
  10. Good question - I am considering both as well next year - would love to know...
  11. Thanks for the link - I had not seen these before, they look great!
  12. Those are my two choices as well..I think we are going with WWS since it will be out in time (with the emailed first weeks for the fall).
  13. We worked through about half of the program this year, primarily using the notebook pages. My kids were 5th and 2nd. We did get the Student Atlas for my oldest and the Beginner Atlas for my 2nd grader. In those we were able to find answers for all of the questions and the mapwork. For some of the charts and other pages we used the internet and searched. We only worked on this 2x a week, questions one day, mapping the other. Extra pages we would add onto one day. My oldest did the illustrated dictionary words also. I also had my kids memorize the country names (and my oldest also did the capitals) for each continent as we covered them. I REALLY have liked this very simple, not time-consuming way of leaning world geography. We will work through the rest of the continents this coming year.
  14. :iagree: This is exactly what I have found - the explanations in the student units are very easy to understand and thorough. It also notes what drills should be done prior to starting the lesson.
  15. Thanks for the info - off to go browse...:001_smile:
  16. I do not think you need the TM's, though for the older grades you will want the answer keys. But at this point I have only used 400 and up. I did purchase 200 and 300 level for next year without the TMs. The instructions for the concepts and drills are all in the books for the student.
  17. Thanks for the thoughts - he definitely is balking at doing math right now and seems to have shut his brain down for the summer. I think i will review different types of problems with him on a whiteboard just to keep it fresh. I just panic when I see my kids aren't "getting" something that I thought they had mastered. This is also reinforcing my choice of a spiral curriculum though, as he clearly needs somewhat consistent review. I also agree with the need to challenge him as well, we have LOF fractions which I had shelved, which may be a nice change this summer and reinforce the fractions in a different way. Thanks!
  18. Just posting to see if I anyone else out there has any similar experiences. My ds11 (rising 6th), has been using CLE math (through 603) with sporadic MM and SM thrown in. We finished his 5th grade year and have taken a few weeks off, but knew I would review some math over the summer. This week we started reviewing material he covered and reviewed all of last year. He seems to have forgotten basic fraction concepts (dividing, converting improper fractions, etc.) and decimal multiplication (how to place the decimal in the answer - he wants to line it up like in addition). It has happened in a few instances, so I quickly go to my "oh no, did I choose the wrong curriculum, what happened to my super mathy kid!!" Clearly we need to stop and review this summer before we start tackling the pre-algebra work next year. Would love words of wisdom -
  19. Thanks for the info! Looking to add a few classics this summer.
  20. This would be a good plan - With my dd who started in 1st grade, sometimes we would skip weeks or go more slowly at times when difficulty increased, taking her more than a year to finish WWE1. Or even wait for 2nd grade to start. We did that with my oldest who was 2nd grade when it first became available. He will be doing WWS for 6th. It seems right on track for where he should be.
  21. We print as we go and it works out great for us, but we are going at a fairly slow pace. I think you would only miss the color with the history pages and maps.
  22. I agree with checking out CLE - we love it here...
  23. Way to take the time to follow up - it often pays off! Glad it worked out so well!
