  1. I would just hang on to them and convert them as opposed to dollars the next time someone travels outside the US. I may have the wrong person, if so I'm sorry, but I think your dh just went to Korea. He could have converted euros as easily as dollars.
  2. Just wanted to add that Khan academy does statistics which might be useful with Fred. Also dummies does a stastics course with a workbook. My DD13 did it over a few weeks because she had completed all of her math books. She really enjoyed it. It could be a supplement too.
  3. I ordered a study guide for Gardener's. It has the same cover as one of the older editions. I just received that. It is well written but not overly colourful. We've be waiting for the study guide to really figure out if more is needed. Looking forward to seeing how detailed the guide is. Thank you for the other ideas.
  4. I would hats it! Don't look! But it is great for the kids. So just don't look.
  5. No great advice but I wanted to tell 5wolfcubs that I loved her links. Also I found Pandia Press to be really interesting. I plan to investigate it further. Their middle ages looked very User friendly.
  6. A friend who is Dutch has made sure all of her children are able to do GCSE level Dutch. We live in the UK so they actually take the exam through their school. They know very little before the exam process starts even though their parents speak it constantly at home. They really improve when they have a goal. They also enjoy interacting with their family much more now. They take the exam early at 12. Maybe this would be a good goal for the Norwegian -- a IGCSE or at least the guidelines. I also think study materials could be obtained. My friend doesn't use them but I think I saw something on line. I picked German too. You know it.
  7. I can't give advice on the cc route because my DC's are too young. I would suggest using LOF to fill in the algebra gaps. My kids really love them. Beganning Algebra Fred filled in some gaps I knew my son had. He is now doing Advanced and thanked me yesterday for letting him do it. I don't usually receive thanks for school work from him!
  8. Having a child walk home alone unless it is comman practice is unacceptable. How hard is a phone call?
  9. Too far to drive daily especially since you have a good option for labs and help keeping things in focus. Go with the co op it should suit your needs.:001_smile:
  10. :iagree:I really like knitplcks. They have metal points but I prefer the wooden ones-- maybe they are bamboo. The cables don't twist when I knit. I have never tried the other brand. I would try both then get more. This is a purchase that you can use for year!
  11. This is my DS's job. He uses baking soda, a cheap tube of toothpaste, and lots of elbow grease. It actually works really well!
  12. The handbook is the homeschool freebie this week at homeschoolfreebies.com. part of it can be downloaded each day. I have it in book form. Rarely use it. But it has been handy when I have. It is interesting but I wish I hadn't paid so much for it.
  13. Thank you for the great link!:001_smile:
  14. Someone actually did a book of lists for library books for this. I can't remember the name. I'm sorry. I had it several years ago and passed it on. I'll be honest and say it wasn't hugely successful. There were many States that my library had none of the books for. Sorry this isn't more helpful but it will bump you!
  15. There are so many great products out there. I would start by reading a copy of " The Well Trained Mind" bearing in mind the 3 rd edition is the most detailed in regard to curriculum suggestions. It has helped so many people decide how to do home ed. When we moved the kids kept a journal with pictures of the new things they did each day. I also read tons of books aloud to keep entertained. A kindle might be handy. Maybe a math workbook. Your days will be full exploring. Checking the regulations in Hawaii is vital before you order anything. I would also keep looking at this forum. The people here are very helpful and have lots of great ideas.
  16. I think 3a and 3b are the Singapore lessons on khanacademy. You might want to use those as you do the book.
  17. My DH says there is a saying in the military. "My recruitor lied to me..." Nothing is guaranteed. It says so in the enlistment contract. You sign a contract that says what your MOS is planned to be-- but there are no guarantees. Many clearances must happen and your son needs a top secret clearance with a special background investigation. Lots can go wrong. It wonderful your son has such high scores but the recruitor cannot guarantee anything. He has no control after your son signs. DH agrees with Mrs. Mungo.
  18. Just asked DH his opinion. He is a senior military officer. His response is if your son has serious aspirations to be an officer the route he must go is ROTC. It is just too risky to go any other route if he wants a career as an officer. RE: CRYPTOLOGY while he could take the exam mentioned before enlistment in order to get his MOS. He would not be guaranteed that position until he received several clearances. No one can guarantee they will be granted. He could end up with a completely different job.
  19. I think it sounds good. The read alouds made those programs really special. Make sure you some of the ones that were removed. Some were turned into readers.
  20. The Janice Van Cleave books are good too. She has one on famous scientists.
