  1. Following. We will be trying our first TOPS unti, Radishes, starting next week. I'd love to hear recs for others!
  2. Have you looked at Kolbe's Jr. High lit program?
  3. Following. My dd will study US history and lit next year. She will primarily use Excellence in Lit, but perhaps we can also read a few of these others even if we don't thoroughly study them all.
  4. If you're think that Saxon is what you want long term then I don't see the point in doing Singapore in between. Make sure you take the Saxon placement test to find out which book she should be in. Saxon is a unique program that most people either love or hate. Perhaps it would be good to give it a try now and see if she's one who loves it. You always have MM to go back to if it doesn't work out. Try to find it used so that if it doesn't work for her, then you can resell it and not lose much money. I hope you find something that works!
  5. I chose Lands of Hope and Promise by the Catholic Textbook Project.
  6. I've chosen my dd's main history spine for next year, but I think it's nice to have a few supplementary books around. Plus, my dd loves history and I know she would enjoy having plenty of sources around. So, can you recommend any good US history texts or supplements? Thanks!
  7. IEW with their Fix-it Grammar starting in 3rd grade (MAYBE in 2nd). Before that, reading books together, maybe writing down some narrations for them, and simple dictation - WWE 1 or 2 if you need a program.
  8. I feel pretty confident that I've made my final choices: Math: AoPS Geometry and Advanced Algebra concurrently (this will still take 2 years to complete, but my math prof husband doesn't want her taking a whole year off from Algebra) English: Analytical Grammar High School Reinforcement: American authors, The Elegant Essay, Windows to the World, Excellence in Lit: American Lit (some how combining these last two, but not planning to complete everything in both) American history: Lands of Hope and Promise Science: Kolbe biology Theology: Kolbe 9th grade Foreign Language: 3rd and 4th Form Latin, Rosetta Stone Italian with added grammar study, reading and writing. Fine Arts: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Church choir

    AAS

I just use the TM. We do lessons and practice words on the white board. I keep a list of "Trouble words" to practice and I typed up a list of the rules by reading through the TM and we review those every Monday. I found all those cards cumbersome. I DO like the cards for AAR, but I've found I don't need them for AAS.
  10. Check out Phonetic Zoo by IEW. It is not teacher intensive and it's quick for the student to get through each day. You can find samples and a placement test on the IEW website.
  11. Thank you for the suggestion. My dd really enjoys Latin and does well with it. Plus, she was already planning to start Third Form in a few week right after she finishes Second Form. If she does them back-to-back like this, she could skip the review at the beginning of each book and then probably finish both in a year. Good idea! I also didn't know about MPs Independent Study classes. Thanks!
  12. I kinda figured it would be more than Latin I but less than Latin III. So, half a credit of Latin II? If she continues with Fourth Form for 10th grade, then Henle II for 11th grade (then I don't even know what comes after that???), what would those count for on a transcript? I guess Fourth Form would be another half credit of Latin II. After that?
  13. My dd will be using Third Form Latin for her 9th grade year. Should I list it as Latin I (because it's her first year of studying Latin in high school) or Latin 3 (because of the title) or something else? Thanks!
  14. I'm really stuck on finding the right history and science for my 4th and 6th grader next year (I usually school them together). I will also have my first high schooler in the fall along with a 2nd grader, a Ker, a 3yo, and an infant. So, I need something pretty independent, but something where I still have some involvement. I find that they learn more when I am part of the lessons and they enjoy it more. But, I don't have the time to read aloud for hours a day or to lead super-involved labs. But I would still like science with labs. Any science and history suggestions that might work? Thanks!
  15. Thanks for the reply. I knew about the virtual labs, but I really want my dd to have some hands-on lab experience. It's good to know that there are good labs in the book we can do. I went ahead and ordered a copy of the text from Amazon last night so I can look for myself and start planning.
  16. What kinds of labs are included in the Kolbe biology course? Are there microscope labs? Are the labs really high school quality or should we supplement if we go with Kolbe? Thanks!
  17. Do these come with everything you need for the experiments?
  18. I never used the 1e, but we are enjoy the 2e of A and B now. I find it to be very open-and-go and my kids are enjoying!
  19. I've never used Writing Strands but I am using SWI B with my 3rd, 5th, and 8th graders right now and they are all doing very well with it and enjoying it. It has made writing easy here. I've sped things up for my 8th grader and she is now happy to be writing reports. But you should know that SWI B doesn't include all the topics of the complete IEW writing program. I also got the TWSS and I will go through the additional topics on their with her soon as I think they are essential to get to soon as we near high school, such as moving from a report to an essay. HTH!
  20. Actually for Kolbe you can substitute all their courses for your own with the Magna or Standard diploma if you want. And if you look at the link in the previous post, it's $320 your first year and $295/year after that. I'm not trying to convince you to use Kolbe. I have no personal experience with them. But I have looked at them a lot as I'm considering it for my dd next year. I just wanted to make sure you had all your info to help with your decision. Good luck!
  21. We don't worry about grammar until 3rd or 4th grade. Then we use GWG for a year or two as a light grammar intro and then move onto JAG and AG.
