Excited for the new changes to Sonlight!
camikins2010 replied to lovintolearn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I didn't realize you could choose which version to buy, so I'll just hang on to make a decision. -
Sonlight alternatives - need recommendations
camikins2010 replied to 8circles's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Please help me understand how this curriculum works. If you purchase the year does it include the readers and read-alouds or are they purchased separately? -
Excited for the new changes to Sonlight!
camikins2010 replied to lovintolearn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. A lot of good info here that I never thought of. We've been using SL since we started homeschooling about 4 years ago and have love it! With the exception of the LA...we tried it the first year, but it just was not our cup of tea. Since then, we've purchased the Core w/o the LA. I will say that when I got the email regarding the changes, I was excited, but now I"m not so sure. Thinking about purchasing the Core now before the new ones are released and then depending on the reviews exchange for thew newer version if necessary. What do you all think? -

Comparing Protestantism and Catholicism
camikins2010 replied to knit247's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The major thrust of the Reformation is that the Roman Catholic Church had abandoned the Bible in favor of the traditions of man. One of the major tenets of the Protestant Reformation is sola scritura (scripture alone). Man's word or traditions does not have any biblical authority at all. -
If you school year round...
camikins2010 replied to amo_mea_filiis.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
We basically go from July to April...since it's so hot here in the summer to do anything outside. But we do Math and Literature/Reading all year. -

Thanks Kinsa. I liked the demo. Have you heard of Piano Wizard Academy? Pretty expensive, wondering if it's worth it. -
Foreign Language
camikins2010 replied to camikins2010's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I would prefer they learn Spanish but they are interested in Latin. Will see what's available here locally, if not, maybe I will try an online class. Thanks! -

We live in a cove, so our backyard is larger than most of the houses in our subdivision...we have two chickens (I would not get anymore living where we are now). They are for the most part "free range" except at night we do lock them up in their coop. Definitely worth it and not hard at all the maintain...water and food once or twice a week...and my girls clean up their coop once a week. Right now they are not laying as much due to the winter season, but that's ok. We decided not to put a lamp in their house and they seem to be just fine.

My DD has no music experience at all, but need this for HS credit...any suggestions?
-
This is from DD: I really do love the history books that they provide. I learned different things. The books are very interesting and keep me wanting to read more. History is now my favorite subject! I especially love learning about the wars and their effect on the world. From MOM: DD loves history so much, that I can rely on her to get it done...so she is studying independently.

Which type of calculator is best for ACT?
camikins2010 replied to Leonor's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Yes...bring a calculator. My DD took the ACT test today and did not have a calculator. Afterwards she said it was easy except for Math...wished she had a calculator...MOM completely forgot! Luckily, she only took the test as practice....9th grade...so we can see where she's at. -
Need advice on this one. Tried using Rosetta Stone and other CD type curriculum, my girls just get bored with it just after a few lessons. Thinking about trying an online course. But a friend of mine said she plans on having her son go through a community college when they are in 11th grade and get a 2yr credit for HS plus college credit/s. Anyone done this? Pros/Cons?

Congrats on an amazing day! Had a crazy week myself. Got a job working weekends, however, I'm going thru training which is during the week, so for a few hours a day, I'm working...which completely changes our schedule around. A couple more weeks, then hopefully things will be back to normal.

Perfect example why I have such a hard time with grammar...especially commas. Whenever I'm stuck about when to use a comma, I ask my hubby...I typically get a "yes, that is correct, however, you can make the argument that..."
