  1. Here in Chicago we have drive thru testing https://abc7chicago.com/where-to-find-coronavirus-testing-in-chicago-area/6044390/ I drove past one near from my house last week. It was empty around noon.
  2. My dd is also looking at taking us-gov with PAH and I would love some feedback. A pm is fine for me if necessary but why were you underwhelmed?
  3. This is an interesting point. I am now thinking about how to help my children compare/examine degree requirements with the actual job(s) it might qualify them to seek. Thinking back to college I remember selecting a career based on course requirements and my end job was nothing like what I thought I would be doing. I took hard classes and ended up with an unbelievably easy job.
  4. This week my daughter (grade 9) completed a two session class called "Career Exploration: Choosing a Fulfilling Career Goal" with Outschool. I feel like it was a good start for her to start thing about her future. I was surprised and pleased to see her making plans. I would recommend the class.
  5. My dd took fundafunda biology this year and the lab work appeared weak. Signing her up for the WTMA Bio Lab section next year appeals to me.
  6. WTMA USHistory class is my dd's all time favourite classes. I am sure she is one of the class talkers. The primary source work has been outstanding. Currently she is writing the 5-6 page midterm. It seems like a lot to me but she is not complaining. I am amazed at the amount of writing she does for this class. I will seek out this teacher again. Regarding workload: My dd14 is taking WTMA AOPS alg2, WTMA Lit, WTMA SAT prep, WTMA USH, Local poetry, toastmasters, web-design and writing classes & Biology at Fundafunda. (She does not like the format of the FundaFunda class but the class is solid.) She took WTMA Exp Writing 3 last year. 1. amount of reading per week - The book is college level and they appear to be covering all of the book. 2. amt. of writing per week - My daughter says it takes her 2-3 hours per week for reading and writing. I have not listened to any of the USH lectures. I will put that on my todo list. I would be happy to send you an example of the work my daughter is producing and teacher feedback. I don't want to post it on the forum but happy to message you privately.
  7. This year ds is taking online Physics thru Clover Creek. He has a daily message with detail items for him to complete each day. The class includes problem sets and an answer key. If you are looking for an online physics class for next year take a look at http://www.clovercreekscience.com/ You could email the instructor to discuss your current challenges and get her input for next year.
  8. I am wondering about the supplies list for the class. I email the school. They said For now, all you need for the class is what is listed on the course description page. I reply back asking for the supply list. Does anyone have last year's list? Terri
  9. I am also concerned with teacher swap because I selected this class due to outstanding teacher reviews.
  10. Paige The resource, The Eloquent Essay: An Anthology of Classic & Creative Nonfiction, that you recommended for reviewing good essays is now in my Amazon cart. It looks great. Thanks
  11. Paige and Farrar Thanks for the quick replies. She does love Star Wars. The assignment was her final for WWS Expository 3. The assignment was to pick a topic for a 1500-3000 word essay that was organized with strong topic sentences. Your comments help me define what was troubling me the most. It was the drifting back and forth between treating Star Wars an actual 'real' event or a story. I will ask her to pick a point of view. She can either discussing this as a story line or as if it is real events. Does wording improve with age? Her vocabulary is high but her word phrases are often awkward. I need to think more about her writing curriculum for next year. I would like her to improve word flow and practice organizing and understanding the elements of a great essay. I feel better that you mentioned it was grade appropriate. I don't have anything to compare with and my expectations sometimes are unobtainable. Thanks for your help.
  12. Below I have copied my dd13's essay but encountered issues with formatting the document. I removed footnotes and citations. I need an independent opinion of her writing. I think she needs more practice in organization and word flow but I am not sure which curriculum could help her the most. ANY opinions would be helpful and greatly appreciated. TIA -Terri You see Star Wars everywhere these days, on posters, bedspreads, and bobble heads, yet, not many people think to ask themselves why are the rebels rebelling against the empire? Do they cause any damage? Do they do more bad than good? The empire does things for almost no seeming reason, leaving people to question the emperor’s motives. They fill the media with propaganda to make people follow them blindly. Many people join the military because they believe they are doing the right thing or that’s what the posters say. Though many soon believe otherwise but, cannot leave. The military itself is expansive and covers almost all reaches of known space. Many of the officers there only respond to the emperor. The emperor rules with an iron fist, willing to deal out punishment to anyone who seems against him. He gives the appearance of following the wishes of the galaxy but follows his own agenda. The emperor tosses away his officers like old toys when the have outlived their usefulness. He kills his own teacher once he has learned everything from him. Old veterans of the war he masterminded get thrown away in holes with no jobs. Many received faulty care because the empire did not want to spend money on them. Who wants to spend money on old men? He controls the media and takes sure the few bureaucrats who want to act cannot do anything. One of the more notable senators, Mon Montha, quits the senate because she is unable to create change there. She is unable to stop the “escalating outrages committed by the imperial military.†It was her speech on the news broadcasts that lead to the formal rise of the Alliance to restore the republic. The empire is always harsh when dealing with could be insurgents. The accusations spike when Mon Montha leaves the senate. People who speak out get quickly silenced. You never see someone again when they have spoken out. They could be in a spice mine, an imperial prison, or even executed. Simple things like selling fruit without a license can get you sentenced to many years of hard labor. If you even seem associated with any insurgents you may disappear, never to be seen again. If you seem like you could ever be a security risk you disappear. For any minor infraction or even suspicious behavior you can disappear. The empire is known for damaging prisoners when bringing them to jail. A common fear is Stormtroopers because the sight of one usually means someone is being arrested. People are told the troopers are keeping public safety into keeping public order. Few believe the stories told anymore. It became hard for people to find the truth in anything. Many feel the squeeze of no way to speak out. They feel trapped within their own worlds, no way to change anything. Before the empire and the emperor people were free to express themselves. They were free to do as they pleased. People could speak up and be listened to, not just silenced. Now people are afraid to speak up. The empire rules with fear, not accordance, like the Republic did. They damage whole planets to get materials faster. They kill populations of whole towns if they are suspected to be sheltering supposed enemies of the rebellion. In the movies and shows you see this often, many people are relocated to places where they are unable to make a living. You get propaganda at every turn. No protesters against every action. No real way to get anyone to listen to you. The senators will not listen to you. Many of their pockets are over following from bribes. Many people choose to rebel because of this. Luke Skywalker fights against the empire because the empire killed his friend Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jyn Erso rebels because her mother was killed by the empire and her father was drafted to work on one of the empire’s many weapons projects. There are people like Han Solo, who get caught up into the rebellion and cannot get it in them to leave. There are people who finally step up to do something after seeing so many wrongs that the empire has committed. Zaluna from A New Dawn see sees numerous people get arrested. She finally decides to do the right thing and help people. Some people attack the empire from profit. Truly people rebel for many different reasons. The similarity is they want to help people, to be free, or even justice for others or a bigger pay check. These people let the empire know their answers have consequences, people like to follow the crowd. Most people when wanting things choose never to look at the evidence against it like the economic damage the rebels do. They are supposed to be the good guys but, what are they doing for the deficit caused by the Death Star? Trillions of credits or dollars went into building it. When it is destroyed, who will pay for it? The banks that loaned the money now have no way to get their money back. The rebels certainly have no way to get that money as shown many times they struggle in getting resources. Many times, they have numerous pilots just waiting to get onto a ship. A huge amount of money went into building the Death Stars and they have no way to pay back the supplies and labors who built it. You see the rebels destroy ships often, even whole buildings. Where does the money to replace those come from? The deficit caused by the rebels should put them into a, essentially, great depression. Remember before the empire there was economic instability from the Clone Wars. The empire gives economic stability and stable jobs. Most people are fine with the empire. They just go about their lives glad that the galaxy is stable. The Rebels remove what stability there is. Many Rebels are like Saw Gerrera. They destroy things and are quick and viscous in their lopsided justice. Sometimes they attack people for helping the empire or attack for revenge or even standing by and not doing anything. People like Saw make the empire increase their military presence and crack downs. If there were no rebels, there would not have to be high presences of military anywhere and the empire would slacken its grip on the galaxy. Therefore, if there were no more rebels the majority of vile deeds would stop. Rebels activity in sectors often makes it worse because the empire has to increase their presence. When we look at the rebels, we have their story presented from their eyes, slanted towards them. We need to look for the bias and remove it to get a clear view. The rebels are always presented as do-gooders for the galaxy, undoing the wrongs of the empire. All we see is the galaxy presented from their view and an all-knowing view at that. The rebels do not know the emperor “manipulated the Clone Wars for his own ends.†They do not know the true extent of the wrongs the emperor committed to get to his position. Only paranoid people think those sorts of things and they just get dismissed by everyone for being crazy. The first to act is always the crazy ones but, they usually just make a bigger mess. Many of them are considered “deranged and shell-shocked Clone Wars veterans†and no one in their right mind would follow them. Most people forget that an all-knowing view can be bias. Generally speaking, most of the people in the galaxy are completely fine and it is only a few that rebel. There are many people in the right position to do something but, they do not. They are fine with the empire. Most of the heroes we know so well from the movies “were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally, they became heroes.â€[5] Most of them would have done nothing. Many of our beloved heroes were planning on joining the empire. In A New Hope Star Luke says he wants to join the imperial army and leave the barren planet. Many people like the empire because it gives them the chance to have adventures. Star Wars has always been presented from the perspective of the Rebels. No one in their right mind would believe their cause is wrong and we have been presented their cause from their view. People try to always make you believe the other side’s cause is wrong and theirs is correct and you should join it. When we think about Star Wars from a broader perspective we realize that there are bad people on both sides, horrific deeds committed by both. We are just highlighted to the bad of the empire and the good of the rebellion. Truly they are just people.
  13. BUT where?? If you had a budget of 600000. Where would you live? It needs to have 3+ bedrooms, fishing and water access for a pantoon boat. It would be within 45mins to a major airport and potential rental is a bonus.
  14. I started WWS when my dd was in grade 6. We did the first 7 weeks. I loved the material BUT she was flustrated and angry at me. That happened just before the WTM academy opened. I quickly signed her up (translation****I turned my headache over to their on-line teacher). My daughter loved it!!! She struggle with the assignment for the first half of the year and then started sailing thru the book. She is in the middle of year three with WWS at the WTMA and is writing essays that make me proud.
  15. I am in the same spot one year later. I have the 9th edition . I am wondering how your year is going with Physics. I am planning for next fall.
  16. I picked up the Killgallon Paragraphs for High School this month. It is exactly what I was seeking. My dd (13) is currently taking WTMA Expository 3. She is doing great with learning the formula for putting essays together. Her papers sound a bit stiff and need elaboration. This book provides practice adding "tools" to the her sentences. It provides guided steps on adding appositive phrases, elaboration, descriptive details with participles, and a couple of other tools. I like the use of literature to provide the practice using the imitate method. I think this will work for my daughter. Anyone else using this book?
  17. My family is in the middle Tn area. I usually drive between Nashville and Washington DC every 12-18 months. That is after driving from Canada.....long road trips to visit scattered friends and family.
  18. I believe that I need to travel in find a psychiatrist to met our needs. I can easily travel to Washington dc area or Tennessee for testing. I am willing to travel to any locations for a great recommendation for gifted psychiatrist. It is just occurring to me that I should search this forum for recommendations. Thanks again for your support!
  19. I wish I could use Davidson Young Scholars program. We are Americans but living in Canada on a work visa. The Davidson website says we must be residing in the US. The minute we move back to US, I will be applying! :)) Finding resources in the post secondary institutions here in Alberta is also very difficult. I can only dream of dual enrollment.
  20. Injecting structure might help. He is unschooling in the sense that he plows thru educational YouTube videos for hours each day. He is delighted with each new video or when he finds new YouTube bloggers to follow. He did all the crash courses for fun. This year he did an online writing class from WTMA and it worked great for him. He is working thru AOPS math But needs hand holding every step of the way. Each year he completes the local required currculum objectives for his grade to fulfil our homeschool regulations(not a difficult task but provides some structure). This month I purchased several Great Course with the plan of using them for springboards. His day to day activities are extremely flexible. I will consider scheduling his activities on a daily planner to see if that helps.
  21. As I was composing my last response several of you offer more great insight. I will look at an accelerated program for him to possibly work thru. Currently, he jumps around depending on his interest and how much time he has for a rabbit hole. This unschooling approaching is producing a vast knowledge bank. I tried a community social skills program last fall. It was for grades 4thru 6. They presenter told the children that your emotions come from your heart. The class was over at that point as my son started explaining the parts and functions of the brain. He did not return for more sessions. Maybe I should not have washed my hands of social skill but it was bad. I will look for better options for him. My son will get very loud. Most of his questioned seem to be providing guidance for others that he thinks needs help. Simple example. I am going to the store and he thinks I have left my purse at home. "Mom where are you going? "Mom are you stopping anywhere else? Mom are you buying anything? Mom is Dad buying anything? Mom why are you going to the store? He never comes out to say "Did you forget your purse? ". He uses a hundred leading questions to work around what he wants to find out or help correct my actions. I will ask around for referral to an ASD specialist. People have commented over the years that he might have Autism. Thanks again for your support!

  23. You guys are great with the fast replies. Thanks for your insight. When he was administered the WISC by a different psychiatrist, she said "I did everything to pin autistism on him and he does not have it. He sounds like it and has several traits but he is not autistic. ". I did not ask her but wondered later what type test could rule out ASD. The ongoing questioning is killing everyone in our family. I will consider getting another opinion. Good idea to get on wait lists. I can always make a decision when and if he gets to the top of the list. I have placed him in public school twice with dismal results. I have made play dates with other kids and things almost never seem to work out. The peer pressure from those encounters really did not help the situation. Actually I don't think he even noticed the other kids signals. With the suggestion of peer pressure I thought maybe modelling from a gifted peer group might work. I will get a copy of The Explosive Child. I need the questions and anger to stop. Thanks for your replies. I will continue to work thru my options with your responses in mind.
