  1. We started today too. This is our sixth year.
  2. DD wants to listen to audio books on her Kindle Fire from Booksshouldbefree.com. We can click on the play button and it will play, but when the chapter is over you have to click on the next chapter. She likes to listen as she's going to sleep at night and doesn't want to have to get up to hit the play button as she's trying to doze off. I've hit the download the MP3 button and while it says it's downloaded, when you go to play it, it says "can't open file". Grrrrr! Anyone know what the trick is so we can get it to play continuously?
  3. Or you could sell them to a friend, who has a habit of collecting math books? :seeya:
  4. I'm not sure I really understand what you're asking. I believe in the authority of God's word, that the days clearly outlined in Genesis means a 24 hour day, just as we know it now. I believe that is what scripture teaches and I take God's word as truth and not infallible man's science, which we all know has been proved wrong many times throughout the ages.
  5. Agreeing she probably doesn't need a 2nd program, but if she really enjoys math I'd look for some interesting supplements that will bolster her understanding. Cuisinaire rods are great, or maybe an abacus to play around with.
  6. I have 2 dogs that need regular grooming because they have either long & straight hair or long and fluffy hair. We pay $45 each for bath, hair cut, nails trimmed, etc...about every 6 to 8 weeks.
  7. I think it's fine. We all need to be able to set boundaries with other people, our kids included. I did this myself as a 5th or 6th grade kid. There was another girl who at one time was a good friend but was constantly being nasty to me and then nice to me. I'd finally had enough and told her so, but in a nice way. Funny thing is that we went to school together all the way through high school as aquaintances with no problems, ran into each other at our 20 year high school reunion and loved catching up! Turns out we really adore each other today. Go figure!
  8. Wonderful! Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I'm going to print this out and go over the options with her tomorrow. If anyone else has suggestions, I'm all ears. :bigear:
  9. Definitely not a need, but just so much fun! How about that? :tongue_smilie: Thanks for all the suggestions!
  10. I've got an aquaintance/friend coming over tomorrow to talk about hsing her dd, who she wants to homeschool for this year only. Friend says her dd has no learning disabilities and can read, but not well. She has already been using Horizons math with her and seems satisfied with it, so I think she's good there, but she needs a solid phonics program. I'm thinking of suggesting SOTW 1 for history but not sure after that. I need to help her find a phonics program for sure, but what else does a first grader really need without overwhelming them? Any suggestions?
  11. :iagree: I think this is wonderful advice. It's exactly what I would do.
  12. Laptop. I love how portable it is and I use mine all over the house.
  13. We have one. I have two kids and they share it. It's a beautiful book. The pages are thick and it looks really nice when you're done. I bought mine used off the boards here and we plan on using it for all four years of our history rotation.
  14. I think that God chooses us, and if He has chosen us, we can't lose our salvation. I think it's normal to doubt and question your beliefs at some point in time. In fact I think it's healthy to seriously examine your faith so you know what you believe and why.
  15. :iagree: DD, who is in 7th grade on paper, has consistently worked a year behind schedule every year since I brought her home after 1st grade. If asked I say she's in the grade she would be in for PS, although her abilities are a year behind. She just works at the level she is capable of. If at the end (or middle) of high school it looks like she hasn't caught up we'll explain that she needs a little more time to complete all her course work. I think there's no need to "hold her back" officially. I honestly don't get why we need to make the distinction at all. Just let him work at his level and don't worry about what to call it. The only reason you'll need to say he's in a certain grade is for sports or church or some other age segregated group, and that won't be dependent on the level of his school work.
  16. If all else fails, pick them before a freeze and put them near a sunny window. Green tomatoes/peppers will usually turn eventually, even inside.
  17. We use it as review and for that purpose I think it's perfect. My kids use MUS to work to mastery and TT for constant review. Not sure I would use it as a stand alone program.
