  1. I'm using Logic Of English with my dyslexic 7th grade dd this year and one of the things I love about it is that it has grammar is built into it, but it's not a full-on grammar program. It's more like review of the basics so she doesn't forget while we put the more heavy concentration on spelling. I think it's the perfect balance for a struggling dyslexic.
  2. Keurig coffee maker Taste of Home potato peeler Lodge cast iron deep skillet w/ lid Cuisinart immersion blender Kitchen Aid mixer
  3. We are reformed, as is the author, but you could probably work around it if need be. We use it as a jumping off point for deeper & further discussion.
  4. Baking and decorating cakes and specialty sugar cookies. I love putting together flavor combinations and figuring out what kind of icing & decorations to use. It's truly edible art. Also enjoy square foot gardening in raised beds and learning how to prune trees & bushes. I do a lot of composting and like to research soil composition to try and get the best compost.
  5. I have 3 stacks of different cards that I use for LOE and I punched a hole in the corner and put them on big metal rings that I hang on the side of a book shelf. It's nice because they're easy to get out and put away, and they always stay organized.
  6. Keep in mind the cost of metra tickets adds up quickly. Weekend rates are better--also consider buying a 10 ride pass to save a bit. Do you know if you want to stay north or west? I don't reccommend south, btw. 0ak Park or Elmhurst (west) are nice, and both have train stations for the metra, with nice (walkable) downtown areas. Schaumburg (northwest) is nice also, but not walkable. I'm not as familiar with north, so maybe someone else has suggestions for that.
  7. Lead his family spiritually Support his family financially Encourage & love his wife Discipline his kids appropriately Work hard Serve others
  8. My kids just studied one section a week and did the quiz at the end lf the week. They enjoyed and learned a lot.
  9. If you want to use it as a full year curriculum, then buy the light blue series. It will cover many topics throughout the year including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, etc... If you just need help with a certain area, for instance one of your kids is weak in multiplication then you would buy the dark blue books that would focus just on multiplication. I believe either the green or gold edition is meant for teachers or tutors who don't need the teaching on the page b/c they teach it themselves. I bought the entire light blue series a couple years ago and have a handful of the dark blue ones as needed to shore up a weak area.
  10. Logic of English has saved us this year. Scripted & easy to use and it's working!
  11. Fresh wild caught salmon, best quality olive oils, fresh organic fruit & veggies, and expensive cheese & wine. And dark chocolate.
  12. For our family it's very useful. Our church uses hymnals with sheet music and we sing from them several times per week.
  13. I'm contemplating the same thing with dd, so will be watching this thread with interest. Already some great advice here!
  14. You could also sell the house and take out a loan to repay the difference of what you still owe. This seems to be an unpopular option, but I believe it's the right one. Do you really need to move, or do you just want to? You could always decide to stay in the house if you don't really need to move.
  15. Dd is half black. We live in a very diverse multicultural area, but I don't believe in the term "black culture". We don't do anything special in reguards to black culture or black history. We talk about the fact that she is biracial and the different ways that that might affect her in society. Her best friend was adopted from Russia. We have two girls who live on our block that are adopted from China. We have kids on our block who are Caucasian and we have kids who are half Mexican and half black. None of them feel left out or different or unusual because they are a great mixture of different races and cultures and none of them stand out or draw attention. I don't think that you should let your children's ethnicity or culture affect whether or not you foster or adopt. Look for opportunities to give them friends or a neighborhood or some other way to be involved with lots of different varieties of people. I don't think you have to study their cultural heritage in order to make it work. That also doesn't mean you have to hide from it or pretend that there are no differences. It's a part of who they are but it's not the whole of who they are.
  16. If MUS works for him I would continue him in it and add a second supplementary math program alongside it. It seems a shame to change what's working for him, especially if you've never looked at the program at the higher levels. I've seen many reviews of people whose kids are not terrific at math but have excelled with MUS and gone on to college with no problems.
  17. Where do you live that you can plant in Feb? We're getting snow here today (Chicago are). I'm dying to get out there though! I can hardly wait.
  18. Just a FYI for next time. Buy Americolor brand food coloring--Super Red, at Hobby Lobby and you'll only need a tiny amount to get a dark red. The stuff is magical!
  19. Logic of English. It's been a life saver for us. Easy to implement, scripted, so open and go. No learning curve. Easy and gets done every day.
  20. Would you mind explaining why it's a problem for you? I'm admittedly ignorant about CC, so no clue what the objection is about. From what I understand so far, MUS is only adding in some additional material, not revamping the whole program if that helps at all. We've used MUS for the last 6 years and plan to continue using it for my DD at least (who struggles greatly with math), and is getting ready to start Zeta soon. I intend to take her all the way through if possible, but would like to know if there's some solid reason to consider not following through with that plan because of adherance to CC.
  21. Here's their web page that tells about the changes. We've done MUS for years and I'm not yet sure how this will affect us. Still looking through the information for myself.
