  1. I don't know where to post so I am putting this on both boards.

I have a friend whose 8 year old son is in public school. He can't read at all. She wants to homeschool him. I am trying to help her get started, but don't know exactly how. I gave him the Barton screening. He passed section A, but failed B and C. He could clap 2 syllable words, but not 3 or 4 syllables. He would either not hear all of the syllables (he said video had 1 syllable) or he would forget the number. He clapped alligator correctly, but then said it had 3 syllables. When we put out a tile for each syllable, then he could count them and get the correct number.

In part C he had trouble distinguishing sounds (said m and n were the same, and could not distinguish i and e). He would also get the order wrong or make up a sound that I didn't say.

Please help me to know how to advise this family.

  3. I think WWS is fine for 10th grade. I used it this year with my 10th grade and 9th grade sons. I combined it will Essentials in Writing which taught various types of essays and the research paper. We didn't get to all of it this year as they had an outsourced speech class that required a lot of time, but I plan to have them complete it this summer. Next year (11th and 10th grades) we will do WWS 2. I will also have them do Lit analysis SWB style with the literature they will be reading, I hope to squeeze in WWS 3 if it is ready in time. Or I might do Advanced Communication Series from Excellence in Writing. I am going to do a better job teaching writing with my younger children. I love SWB's writing materials. She just didn't quite have them written in time for my oldest ds.

  4. Oh, so you are saying that changing the cycles isn't a good idea b/c the work is actually geared toward the their recommended cycles? US1 work is designed specifically for 11th grade? Hmmm...well, yes that does change a lot. ugh! Back to the drawing board!

Yes, MFW high school is different in that the difficulty level increases with each grade and depends upon you learning the writing lessons from the previous year. I would not do US History in 9th either.

  5. I used this with 7th grader, 5th grader, and dyslexic 4th grader. It was a great year, probably my favorite of MFW. It's been a few years since we did it, so I will try to remember. It seems like it took a while to read all the books aloud, but I still did it because I had 3 doing it, the dyslexic ds needed it, and we enjoyed doing it all together. The discussions were great. We had Netflix so we watched a lot of movies that went along with what we were studying.

The only teacher intensive part is all of the reading. I would do that in the morning, then they would all do their individual subjects. THe 8th grader would do his own 8th grade science, but the 5th grader would do MFW science that is included.

  6. Math Relief - excellent instruction, 20 minute dvd lessons, word problems delayed until student completely understands the language of algebra, complete solutions to every problem, no hiccups in the order concepts are presented. The instructor, Mr. Firebaugh, has been selling MR for many years, and he rarely gets calls with questions. There is a reason for this; i.e. clear, logical presentation and progression of concepts.

    :iagree:

  7. I really like Analytical Grammar for 6-8 grade. It is very thorough and the the second season has complex sentences for diagramming. The 3rd season is very thorough coverage of punctuation, capitalization, comma rules, etc and usage. I also like their High School reinforcement books.

Hake Grammar is another thorough choice. The sentences for diagramming are not as complex as AG.

You could do Hake Grammar 5 and then go to AG. Both of them are mostly independent. With Hake, they read the lessons on their own and do it. With AG, I spent 5-10 minutes going over the new concept with them and then they worked independently the rest of the week.
