  1. A friend is wanting to teach a Science Experiment class to 3-5th graders using easy to find home products. She is also wanting to keep the price for the class as cheap as possible. The class will be an hour long and will be weekly. Can anyone suggest a site or books that would be good to use?
  2. Anyone know anything about this? Our oldest ds(21) just lost his job. We don't want him without health insurance and want to find out about putting him on ours. I know they can be on our insurance until 26, but I don't know if they have to be in school, if they have to be living with us or if that will make our rates go up. Does anyone know?
  3. Dh wants to try the HMO plan. It sounds like what we need, since we only see the Dr..every blue moon. The premiums are cheaper than the PPO, lower deductible and the Dr's are only a couple of miles further. We have to pay out-of-pocket for everything we do with the PPO plan, due to extremely high deductibles. So, to pay a co-pay when we go to the Dr. sounds wonderful. Also, to be able to take the kids to a well-visit and get their immunization for $20 sounds wonderful! Our PPO doesn't even pay for immunization or well-visits! If we find that we don't like it, then we can switch next year. Thanks everyone for your feedback!
  4. We are trying to figure out what insurance to go with--we have an option of PPO or HMO. We have always been with PPO's. Our insurance now is ok. We don't have a co-pay...so what ever the bill is we have to pay until we met our deductible--which is high. We don't go to the Dr. that much, but ds has to go to the cardiologist every 2yrs...so we have to pay around $800 out of pocket every year, just for the visit and we still haven't met his deductible. We already have to find a doctor that is on our PPO network, but they are close to us. If we choose HMO we will have to travel a little further about 20 to 25miles. There will be a $20 to $40 co-pay with the HMO and the insurance agent told us that will be all that we pay:confused: This is something that I am not use to..always use to having a bill in about 2wks come in the mail. Our deductible will be significantly less with the HMO than with the PPO
  5. Ds purchased a car from a mechanic on Saturday. Come to find out there are a few major problems with the car. The guy agreed to fix the car either for free or for very little--from what ds says. I want ds to have this guy sign a paper stating that he is agreeing to fix the car "free" or for "so much $$". I also want the guy to agree to a certain time frame to have the car fixed. If he doesn't have it fixed for the agreed amount or the time frame he has to purchase the car back from ds. Question is if ds has all this in writing will it hold up in court?
  6. Other than the newspaper where do you get your coupons? Does anyone do the CVS bucks? How does this work? Any other ways that you save $$$ on groceries??
  7. I have heard that my kids are sheltered--I definitely do not agree. What do you consider sheltered?
  8. When do you start timing the cooking process?
  9. The Dr. took off both sides of ds's ingrown toe nail off in June. Now the toe is once again getting infected--assuming from yet another ingrown nail. I have left a message for the Dr. to call me about it. I have never had this problem before, so my question is, Do you think we should have to pay for the procedure to be repeated??? It has only been 3 months! BTW: The Dr. put some sort of medicine on the toe after he trimmed the toe nail. He said that this would stop the nail from growing on the side.
  10. A few questions #1 Can someone check out http://homeschool.kineticbooks.com/geometry.php and tell me what you think about their Geometry course? I am thinking about using this with ds. We are currently using Saxon Alg II and he is having a tough time with the Geometry part of the course. I thought that I would drop Saxon for now and let him do Geometry and Alg II--next yr. with them. I am hoping they will come out with another math by the time he finishes with Alg II. #2 I already own Teaching Textbook Geometry-- I used it with oldest ds, but he finished all of Saxon Alg 1, Alg II and Advanced Math, so I know he got more Geometry. What are your thoughts on this TT Geometry? Hear are my thoughts let ds use TT Geometry and just sign him up for Kinetic Alg II, then move to Saxon Advanced Math afterward and skip the Geometry in Advanced Math. #3 Does it matter if we do Geometry or Alg II first? If I go with Kinetic Books Geometry then I will definitely do it this year, but if I stay with TT Geometry I am thinking about going with Alg II this year--I would like to take advantage of the sale.
  11. I just purchased a gallon of whole milk on Friday, I had purchase another today--didn't know that we were out yesterday. Oldest ds just moved home and he seems to drink it like water. He is to purchase his own from now on. I can not afford to purchase milk like that. We normally purchase around 4 gal a week--2 whole(dh and dd) and 2 skim(ds and I--I only use it for cereal which isn't often).
  12. I really like the look of this program. Do you have a teachers book to help them if they need it? I need all the help I can get if ds doesn't get one of the problems. Did you have to purchase the books to go along with it or did you find that you could just use the computer program? Did you find that you could use the computer program again and just not have the option for the program to keep the grades for another student? Or did you find that you had to purchase another program for a younger student?
  13. Anyone use this as a full course or is this just for supplementing? Please let me know how you like this and how you use it. Do you feel like it will have your kids ready for the SAT/ACT? Any likes or dislikes?
  14. I think it is more of the geometry that is tied into the program that is throwing him for a loop. A few things are simple mistakes that he is making(ex.--forgetting to finish"finding a certain number of consecutives) and I don't know how to make him see that he needs to really focus on reading and writing out the problem correctly. Also it takes him FOREVER to complete a chapter. I don't know how long it should normally take, but I think that 2hrs is an awful long time.
  15. First let me say that I am not willing to changes our math curriculum. We are using Saxon Alg 2. We went through a lot of math curriculum last year and ended up using our whole summer to complete math. We are NOT willing to do that again. I need advice as to what I can add/supplement to my ds math(Saxon Alg 2) to help him understand it better. He has repeated the last 5 lessons this week. I went over the lessons with him and he got it..did the test today, for the second time, and flunked it AGAIN! He is getting it when he does the lesson, but when he gets to the test he is asking me a thousand questions. I don't want him to repeat the lessons for a third time, so I am needing something to supplement...I am not one to make up questions, especially in Alg 2.
  16. Can someone tell me the difference between the two cd's? I own the DIVE cd for Saxon Alg 2. I was just wondering if Mr. Reed's cd's would be better. I watched the sample video and the only thing I saw different was that there was actually someone there teaching on a white board. It didn't really look to be any different. Can someone explain what the difference--if there is any? Ds needs help in math and I am trying to find something that works. I do not and can not keep spending money on products that teach the same thing.
  17. what would you use? Ds really doesn't like to write. He rather go to the dentist than write. I have him enrolled in an online writing class, but I want him writing more...maybe a paper a week. I need something that has specific details--for him and me--- on how certain papers are write and what they must have. BTW: He is in 9th grade and I am not sure what he should know by now.
  18. Has anyone found any worksheets that work with Saxon Alg 2? My son has problems grasping some of the work and I think a little bit more repetition would help. BTW we have the 3rd edition.
  19. Ds had an ingrown toe nail and we had it removed back in June. Now it looks like the toe nail that is left is about to come off--the sides of the toenail are lifting up. Is this normal?
  20. I purchased one from Land's End and got free shipping:party: Thanks again!
  21. Yes...I put mine in the sink with the facet turned to the other side. This way if it leaks over I don't have much of a clean up.
