  1. Any pros/cons you'd like to offer concerning taking high school classes for credit in 8th grade? Trying to finalize plans for my oldest. I already know what we're using but am stuck on whether to issues credit for a few of his classes. The classes up for consideration are ancient history using Susan Wise Bauer's History of the Ancient World, Algebra I, and Physical Science (is this even still considered a high school science??). We still plan to do three more high school sciences and maths. Any thoughts for or against taking classes for high school credit in 8th grade? Thank you!
  2. No tv's in any bedrooms here either. We have one tv in the living room that we all share. Hubby and I rarely watch tv during the day. We occasionally watch movies after the boys go to bed. We don't have cable/satellite either so there isn't much arguing over what to watch anyway. :001_smile:
  3. My grandfather had two wives. His first wife died before he married my grandmother. They have all since passed and are buried in a private family plot. His first wife is on the left and my grandmother is on the right. :001_smile:
  4. Vomit...I could not watch it. I am utterly disgusted and sad that this happens to more children than we can imagine. I am surprised by the reaction of some to her "lack" of crying once her parents left the room. Really?! Does she need to cry for us to realize that she was beaten??
  5. I try to arrive within 5-10 minutes of the given time. I'm never early and am often late for social events. We hosted a party on Saturday night, starting at 5:30. Everything was ready at 5:30. It would somewhat annoy me if anyone came early (unless it was a bestie coming to help out). I have heard that being habitually late is a sign of arrogance. I tell all my new friends that I am often not on time. I joke that if they want me there by 2, then tell me to be there at one. That will guarantee I'll be there before two! I don't figure that my time is more important than anyone else's. I just figure that the "party" will go on, with or without me.
  6. We're hosting a party this year plus we have other parties to attend so the boys have more than one costume. Ds1: Jack Sparrow and I've talked him into letting me make a mummy costume Ds2: Darth Vadar and Darth Maul (couldn't talk him into letting me make even one of his costumes :glare:)
  7. Our family's favorite is Robert Sabuda's version. My boys look forward to reading it every Christmas Eve. http://www.amazon.com/Night-Before-Christmas-Pop-up/dp/0689838999/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318813400&sr=1-1
  8. I don't shorten anyone's name unless it's something they prefer to be called. That's why myself and all my friends and family call my husband Thomas and all of his friends/family call him Tom. :001_smile: My BFF is a Kathryn and she will quickly correct someone if they shorten her name. On a side note: I intentionally chose my sons' names so they cannot be easily shortened.
  9. I love collecting ink pens in many colors so I grab whatever pen is the closest. Sometimes the circled wrong answer doesn't always stand out so I may even highlight it too! So far, my boys have no problems with any color I use. I always circle wrong answers and expect them to write the right answer alongside. With writing, I simply make editing marks or write comments. My boys really don't care about me writing on their work. They only mind the time it takes to correct the answer but that's it. :D
  10. I bought the workbooks anyway, just in case. We always do the textbook work together, then I send them on their way with the workbook. They do the IP and CWP on their own (although I do go over the examples with them at the beginning of each CWP section). If they're having difficulties, we work the challenging problems together. I like for them to at least attempt to work the problems on their own so I can see what they're thinking. We do the IP about a week behind the workbook. I LOVE the IPs!! They are my favorite part of Singapore Math.
  11. My mother is 57 and I will let my kids wear pj's all day if they choose. It doesn't happen most days because we usually have activities out of the house. They will stay in pj's until an hour or so before we leave though. I stay in my "comfy" clothes until we go out too. :001_smile:
  12. Thanks for the responses! I was trying to get in the rest of our school orders today and was wondering whether I should get a workbook or not. Sometimes I feel like we're spending sooooo much time on math. Not that they're struggling but just that I'm giving them so much to do. :001_smile: Would like to spend more time on science and history this year but the three R's seem to take up so much time.
  13. Has anyone tried using the IP instead of the regular workbook? I'm wondering if we can use the IP in conjunction with the textbook instead of using the workbook. We've been using the workbook, IP, and CWP. I'd like to just cut the workbook out altogether. We also supplement with Horizons for review and variety. Anyone think IP along with CWP is enough?
  14. We got a new pup in February! He's a crazy lil Dalmatian and his name is Phoenix. He's the third Dal we've owned. We had to put Jasmine to sleep last May. She was 13 years old. Still miss her so much. I had forgotten how much work puppies are; but he's so adorable that it makes it all worth it! :D
  15. If you're using a tampon and collecting the urine correctly, I don't see where there would be contamination. Hope it goes well and you get a good results without having to return to the dr. again.
