  1. I have been planning on using MFW K for my son's K year and hoping my 4yo DD could follow along fairly close as well. I want to switch to Core A with they are 5 and 6. Lately though I have been thinking about using SL P4/5 for K instead of MFW K. Looking to hear experiences with doing this, bonus points if you did with 2 kids at once, and double bonus points if you have a blog or know of one that lays out how they organized and set everything up! I'd love to see what you added in as far as LA, math, etc. Both of them know their letters well but aren't reading yet so I'd like something fun and gentle to teach reading with that hopefully my 4yo could get something out of too. MFW's IG looks really nicely organized and ready to go so I'm a little intimidated by having to add stuff to SL, which is why I'd love to see how those who have BTDT ran their IG's. Also would love to hear experiences from those who have used MFW K and SL P/4 for Kindergarten and see which was preferred and why. Thanks!
  2. Those are pretty good reasons :) The changes every year are definitely a turn off. Thank you :) I think I have read that before but with all these people suddenly leaving, I wondered if something had changed. So is it just the secular thing people are upset over? Or is there more to it?
  3. Obviously non-Christian faiths won't mesh, I guess am more specifically referring to Christian doctrine. I have seen a thousand different definitions for Christian on these boards so not everyone who says they are Christian believes the same. When I see so many running from SL, I want to know if the issue is something that can be ignored or that I feel comfortable with exposing my children to. If there are fundamental doctrine differences/issues, that plays a factor in whether I choose the curriculum or not.
  4. That is something I have been seeing, that they don't want certain people as customers. Hoping someone will clarify that. And for those that are comfortable sharing, I would love to know what faith issues SL didn't mesh with so I'll know if I'll mesh or not :)
  5. I have been reading through numerous threads and have noticed a trend that many people are basically boycotting Sonlight. It looks like it is mostly from those who have used it in the past, but for some reason, have become offended by something and refuse to use it anymore. I have been strongly considering Sonlight for several reasons, but it concerns me to see so many who don't like it. I can't seem to find any solid reasons WHY anyone feels this way. I can understand not agreeing with the way certain things are taught, but what I am seeing seems to go beyond that. I realize this may be a hot topic, but would anyone mind explaining to me specific reasons why you no longer support this company (or never have)? I would like to see if the issues others have are things that I would take issue with or not so I can make a well informed decision. Thanks!
  6. If all goes as planned over the next year, I will be starting my local nursing program about the time that I will need to start more structured homeschooling with my 2 children. I have been working towards this for a long time so I hate to back out now, especially since once I graduate I would be able to just work a couple shifts a week and have more financial freedom to homeschool with ease. The schedule of the program is Monday-Thursday, 8am to 12pm 2 days and 6:45am to 12:45pm 2 days. So I will be home at lunch every day and home 3 full days a week. For curriculum, I am leaning toward My Father's World. I love Sonlight, but I'm thinking I definitely don't want to take on that load while I'm in school. Has anyone homeschooled while going to school yourself? Do you think that MFW is a good curriculum to use when you have a time crunch? I have heard that it only takes a couple hours a day and is easy enough to teach that my mom or whoever keeps my kids while I'm in school could do it with them. Would appreciate thoughts on this!
  7. I am kind of in the same boat. Had really been thinking about MFW, but something keeps calling me back to SL. When their new changes came out, I couldn't resist any longer! They actually fixed most of the things I was concerned about! Since I haven't used them yet, I can't tell you anything frome experience, but I can tell you why I'm now leaning toward SL over MFW 1. I LOVE the SL IG's. When you compare the online samples side by side with MFW, MFW seem to really lack. Which some may like, but I love all of the information that SL gives on the topics, the discussion questions, teaching tips, and even book prefaces that include info on material that parents may find questionable, and how to teach on that. I used to like the idea of a less hefty IG so I could do more of my own thing, but eventually realized I would rather have a bunch of info and material to pull from rather than looking elsewhere. 2. For my family, SL seems much more thorough. I really love all the resources included and don't feel like I would need to tweak. When I look at MFW, my head starts to spin with all of the things I would want to add it and adjust. I am not a library person, so I love that I can order one big box and have everything I need. 3. I like that SL introduces weightier subjects early on. While this may not be good for some families, I feel that this is good for mine. My children already have an idea of some of the injustices that go on in the world and there is also a chance we will be serving in Africa in the next couple years. Just from that they will be exposed to other religions (mainly voo doo in our area) and even human trafficking, since the place we will be serving is a children's home for rescused child slaves. I feel like SL's approach to introducing those topics will go well with how we are living our life. I don't know if any of those reasons apply to your family, but I just wanted to share. I still really like MFW though so we will just have to see! Thought of another reason: My children are only 16 months apart so I would be able to combine them in a core from day one. With MFW, I would have to wait until we hit ECC to combine.
  8. There is actually another thread or 2 about it :) I got mine on Friday. I love it, and I'm super excited about the changes!
  9. I am new to all this and attempted reading "the thread" but wasn't sure if I was getting it or not. Your thoughts have beautifully summed up what I was trying to figure out, so thank you, from a fellow Christian :)
  10. I know! It just seems like the most convenient package, and I love how detailed and thorough the IG's are. Anyone else? I guess the main thing I want to know is about the LA and if it is considered a good program for the learning the read stage. Although it might be a waste of time since it is getting revamped. I may have to wait until someone has used the new LA on a Kinder. I want to know now though!!!
  11. Has anyone done this? I'm still debating my choices for when DS starts Kindergarten and there are just so many things I like. I have been leaning toward MFW, but the closer I look at it, and the more other individual options I see, the more I want to tweak and add to it. Sonlight is the only curriculum where I like most of the options included and feel like I could just order the multi-subject package and really be good to go, not looking anywhere else. If you do this or have done this, are you happy with it? Do you feel anything is lacking? I'm especially wondering about their LA program and teaching a child to read with it. It would be just SO convenient to order one big box and not look back! And for what its worth, I'm one of those that really likes their changes coming up.
  12. My cousin's husband is from Brazil and his native language is Portuguese. We actually just recently had a convo about the differences between Portuguese and Spanish. He says that he and everyone he knows from Brazil can understand Spanish fairly well, but native Spanish speakers have a harder time understanding them. So maybe Portuguese would be a better one to learn first?
  13. Thank you, every one! I'm thinking gathering curriculum and supplies before leaving and then having people bring stuff over as needed would probably be best. The place where we would live is about 3 hours away from the capital city in small fishing village, so I would definitely be nervous to trust shipping!
