  1. It has honestly never occured to me that I could be a good or a bad wife. This year will be our 20th anniversary. Some years are easier than others. This past year, we had a long look at our relationship. We found that we were both unhappy in the same areas. We've been working to break some bad habits and let go of some assumptions and spend more time enjoying being together. So far, this is the best year of our marriage. We each decided that we actually still want to be part of "us." We consider our marriage a work-in-progress.
  2. I hate having cold feet. I've spent the last two winters wearing mostly my Joan of the Artic boots by Sorel. I'm barefoot in the house. I wear Inov8 x-tracker with ice spikes for winter trail running. Otherwise, I wear some canvas Rocket Dogs with the bottom mostly worn through or my cushy Brooks for treadmill running. What is comfortable basically depends on temperature and activity.
  3. My 8th grader was recently accepted to an early college public HS. They had a very large list of documentation they wanted before she was accepted, including a transcript. I think that since she's been accepted and is enrolled in classes that they don't require a transcript.
  4. My kids homeschool by choice. I wouldn't do it without their consent. My ds was in ps until 7th grade when I took him out because he felt hopeless. He returned to ps for 9th grade. He came home again for 10th grade and then took several dual-enrollment classes at the local cc. My older dd homeschooled until she went to a classical charter s hool in 6th grade. IShe came home Again in 8th grade for a combination of reasons including boredom and health. We're looking at a part-time early college highschool for next year. My kids each have different paths, but we work together for their education. I can't imagine trying to educate a child that didn't want to homeschool.
  5. My 24 year old has been a paid Santa in Tokyo for the past 4 years. He's 6'5 1/2" and skinny as a stick. He is Santa at Toys R Us and for several large apartment and office parties. He uses bubble wrap and pillow to get a little plump. My kids have so far made a great transition from literal to symbolic Santa without ever telling me about it.
  6. Wipe the blood off your cello when you're finished practicing. Haven't you done enough math today? Put some pants on. You must wear pants when you cook. You can't go outside without pants. Underwear are not the same as pants. No, you can't do your homework in Futhark. Not in Phoenician either. No, I don't need you to write my grocery list in the alphabet you are inventing. No, not in Klingon.
  7. If beef is okay then bison should be. Bison is very lean and a good addition if you can have it. Ostrich is a red meat and doesn't bother my poultry allergy but chicken, turkey, goose and duck do. We're gluten free here too. It is hard to make big changes like dropping multiple foods at a time.
  8. My dd14 is allergic to beef and also reacts to bison so be careful with that. We eat a lot of meatless meals. We eat elk at least once a week and ostrich maybe once a month. We eat a white fish once a week and salmon once most weeks. I'm allergic to pork, poultry, legumes, and nuts so we work hard to get safe meals. We go for dense nutrition, variety in vegetables, and use meat in small portions to accent other foods.
  9. I got a prelit tree a couple of years ago so I would quit stressing about the lights. The tree goes up and we spend a few days adding ornaments when we feel like it. I dont make Christmas cookies. If somebody wants them, they make them. I might even help. I used to be so stressed trying to make the perfect Christmas that I spoiled it for everyone. We spent a few years going skiing for Christmas instead of trying to make it perfect. Eventually I was able to have Christmas at home again. I just kept the parts that were easy and that I liked. We dont decorate outside anymore. We have a picnic and watch movies on Christmas eve. We open presents after I've had my coffee. We go for a walk, play with toys and make dinner together. The tree comes down on New year's day. I know it can be hard, but perfect isn't possible. Sorry you're feeling the stress. I hope you find joy and peace.
  10. I'd suggest starting with a food diary, then maybe talk to you doctor. My child that had frequent stomach aches is celiac. She also had a dairy allergy she outgrew and is lactose intolerant.
  11. My newest dinner resoure is dd14. She started cooking dinner last month. She loves it. Last night was a roasted veggie caserole. Tonight is tilapia with potatoes and other veggies cooked in foil packets. She's also declared Thursdays as rice paper roll night. She chops and prepares lots things to stuff in them then we make then at the table while we chat. Maybe it's time to delegate? :)
  12. My daughter started doing Khan academy along with her algebra and loves it. It is easy to add into a program and doesn't require any additional books. I had her start off with a couple of weeks of just Khan then reinforced with her book. It isn't perfect and there are lots of critics of it, but she is doing well and enjoys it.
  13. I kept the rings from my first marriage for a while after the divorce then one day I looked at the box they were in as I was unpacking from a move. I took them to the beach and tossed them in the ocean. I had been unsure of what I wanted to do with them until that day. Keep them until you are certain what you want to do with them.
  14. I started my dd14 with a personal trainer once a week this year. It is the first thing that has worked for her since she stopped judo. She has started walking to the grocery store several times a week and is using my treadmill too. She wants to be stong enough to join me in krav maga.
  15. My girls watch Alton Brown video clips to find recipes and instructions. I stay mostly out of the kitchen. With practice, they're getting better. I help with assigned tasks and make sure they're being careful with cross-contamination and germs. It is hard, but I is the only way it can work.
  16. My older Dd's experience so far with middle school might be helpful. In 5th grade, she did 1 hour per day of content reading of her choice (science or history). She did 1 hour per day of math. She did music for an hour and did an hour of writing. Once a week she did science labs with a friend. She spent the rest of the day busy but not on electronics. In sixth and seventh grade, she attended a highly acclaimed classical charter school. In October of eighth grade, she came home again. Now she's doing 4 hours per week on math and flying through algebra I. She's working on different genres of fiction writing for about 10-20 hours a week. She is studying science rabbit trails for at least 4 hours a week and taking notes and writing summaries. For history, she's following a one-year summary of world history and taking notes. She is currently interested in cooking and ancient alphabets, so she's planning and preparing meals everyday and learning the Phoenician alphabet. She is also working on sketching, increasing her Latin vocabulary, learning to draw manga and considering Japanese. When she came home this year, we started out with lots structure, but she kept getting distracted by other learning. We ended up with some simple goals and a minimum requirement for a "school day". All of her days don't meet the minimum so they don't all get counted, but many of her days are wonderful.
  17. My ds wears a 15 or 16 depending on the the shoe. Most shoe stores don't carry larger than a 14. I get his shoes at Zappos or Big Shoes online. They both have good service, a good selection and let you search by size and style.
  18. This is a combined list for three of us. Youngest child is celiac. I have IgE allergies that are not in the anaphylactic range to at 20 foods. I get migraines and sometimes hives. Middle child has tested both positive and negative to many foods, but she has a super high total IgE level. She takes an anti-IgE medication which nullifies further tests. We now do a more primitive try on the skin and if it causes hives eliminate and if it doesn't then eat, react, epi-pen, eliminate method of diagnosing the allergies now. We just assume that everything is potentially bad.
  19. That's a great idea. I can't use that recipe (chicken broth), but I'm sure I can find one without it. I've never liked tomato soup, but it's snowing an I want soup.
  20. It's snowing and I want to make a big pot of soup, but I have a houseful of allergic people. I'll list some soup ingredients I know we're allergic to, and y'all can help me make a soup. No: Gluten Soy Beef Pork Poultry Legumes Carrots Potato Shellfish Basil Rosemary Oregano Bay Corn Cinnamon Cumin Winter squash is indeterminate right now Kale Cauliflower Things I normally cook with include: Elk Fish Rice Onions Garlic Peppers Dairy, including lots of cheese Spinach Tomatoes Ostrich even makes it to our table as a dark meat I can manage to feed everyone most days, but I haven't found a soup yet. I especially love thick, hearty stews.
  21. Just because you were homeschooled, doesn't mean you would do a good job homeschooling. It would be awfully presumptuous of me to start planning now how my grandkids will be raised. (I'd normally be more tactful, but let's have controversy today. It is snowing, and there were bomb threats.)
  22. It is a self defense martial art developed by the Israeli special forces. It is fast and hard. It emphasizes a strong offense so that you can walk away from bad situations. Here is a demo video. I am not that fast or strong, but I work hard at it. It makes me feel lean and mean even if I'm not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ignz0VLLwA
  23. Until I broke my finger, I was doing Krav Maga 3 times a week. I would be sore for a day or two after each class - unless it was a hard-hitting class which would leave me bruised and sore for days. Right now, I'm going to a personal trainer twice a week. I'm sore for 3 days after each session.
