  1. We really like Rod & Staff but see they do Shurley Grammar. Would it be confusing to my 4th grader if we do both? I understand R&S is a more comprehensive English curriculum where Shurley really focuses on the Grammar part.
  2. Thanks for your responses! Interesting to hear about the absences. Do you know the percentage of the final grade depends on absences? We are planning to be gone a week without the ability to connect to the internet. Do you feel that your child has enough time to complete the assignments in between classes?
  3. Hi,:) Have any of your children in elementary taken any of Veritas' online classes? I'm interested in enrolling my 4th grader in their math and grammar/writing classes this year. If they have, would you mind sharing their experiences with it? How did the classes work? How many lessons was covered in each class? What was homework like, etc.? Was it worthwhile? Thank you for your help!
  4. history programs. For example, I read on the TOG web site that the emphasis is more on Western History. I saw in Paula's archives that there STOW can been supplemented. I'm wondering if anyone has done and if it was too much for LG.
  5. Thank YOU. I really appreciate being reminded in educating myself through the process. So, if I were to do the Rhetoric stage, would that be part of my preparation to teach my LG dd? Karen, I like the workbook idea. I read on your web site that it takes a week to do 3 workbooks for your 3 boys. How long do you think it would take me to setup for my one LG? Thanks!
  6. I found it really helpful even after watching the DVD by Britta. She does a good job giving an overview. However, the seminars were well worth the money if you can afford it. The interaction with a trainer is very helpful, especially in the questions people posed in class. There were things like finger spelling that my seminar trainer taught that I don't remember seeing on the DVD. This was really helpful for my daughter who had already spent 6 months of it with me prior to my attending training. She seemed to really get it. The manual may say something about it too but when you're just starting out, these minor details may get missed. Yes, you can do SWR without attending the seminar but if you're on the fence on whether to go, I highly reccomend it. $200 covers K-High School. My seminar trainer offers a 50% for alumnaes of her training. I hope to take it again to review anything that I may have missed the first time around.
  7. After our first year of home schooling, I am prayerfully reevaluating our curriculum choices and appreciate your help. My dd who will be in 2nd grade loved FIAR which we'll be continuing through the summer. I could continue on with FIAR till we finish all 3 volumes and then move on to something like TOG or start TOG in the fall. I've not decided. I used a mismash of curriculum and felt that the one thing that I wanted her to see is the continuity of God throughout our learning together which is why I thinking about TOG whether now for in the future. I am only schooling my dd and have a ds who is 2. For those of you who have experienced TOG, how much time do you think it would take for me to prep and teach TOG LG to my dd? I like the workbook idea on Revell Press which I can see help in cutting down the time. What are some things to consider before going into TOG, i.e. what you wished you knew before starting the program? Thank you for your help.
  8. My dd loves Little House and always asks me if she can go and see where Laura and Mary grew up. I'd love to take her on a field trip to all the little house places and realize this takes planning. I was wondering if anyone has done it and how you went about planning it. Is there a resource out there that would help in planning? I'm thinking about doing a family trip where we would RV to the different areas. If you have done this, can you tell me how long it took you? Thanks for your help.
  9. How can I find Paula's archives? I'm interested in your approach in using MOH as the main text and listening to SOTW. How much time do you spend on MOH? Thanks.
  10. Thanks for the info on MOH. Did you follow the reccomended reading list in WTM for 2nd grade in following MOH pace? Can you explain a little more about what parts of SOTW you used? Also, how much time did you spend in preparation for MOH?
  11. Hi, Last year we didn't do much for history for my dd who is in 1st grade, except listen to the SOTW CD a couple of times and a few chapters in the activity book. So for 2nd grade, where do I start? Shall I just move ahead to the middle ages for SOTW and then return to Ancients when she is in 5th grade? I'm also contemplating using MOH because of the Christian world view and appreciate any feedback, especially if you used SOTW. Thanks. Lisa
  12. I'm in the same boat with my dd who is 6 1/2 is having trouble with mastery. I'm leaning towards a spiral method for her and was contemplating Saxon. A friend reminded me that it's more important that they get the concept at this age rather than rote memory. I happen to have Singapore math which I didn't use before because my daughter didn't take to it at first. After a morning of crying and staying that it's too hard, I just pulled it out and we started working on the subtraction facts and she seems to take more to it than MUS. I'm going to try it for awhile and see how it goes. There's more color in the text book and different activities to use math concepts. For example, there's a coloring activity where she is the math fact and color in the answer per the corresponding color of the answer. She seems to be ok with it so we'll see. All the best in finding the best solution for your dd. lfong
  13. Called Saxon for sample packet. Good idea! Thanks.
  14. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, good not so good. It's interesting that some of the comments have been that it's boring since I'm not so sure MUS has much bells or whistles. I think I'll take up the suggestion to find someone who has used it and show me. It sounds like Saxon is good for building a solid math foundation but maybe weak at word problems and critical thinking? If so, what are you doing to supplement?
  15. We're thinking about switching math programs but would like your feedback. My dd is currently using a MUS but seems to need a spiral method. I'm undecided. I haven't come across any strong positive comments on Saxon and would appreciate your feedback, pros and con. Thank you.
