  1. Thanks. I may need to quote y'all, if I may. :)
  2. Our family is leaving our church. There are many reasons why we have to go. We have a few sweet acquaintances who will be surprised and saddened by our leaving. We don't want to hurt their feelings or have a scene made out of this...like the uncomfortable call or home visit asking 'why', asking us to stay, etc. What can we say to make this leaving quick and a little less painful for us? It's awful right now and we just can't do it anymore. :crying:
  3. 5. I am looking for the same thing lol. As I was looking around I found this: http://www.livingbookscurriculum.com/the-roots-of-american-order I have it in my Amazon cart so I can't give an opinion, but they say it can be a high school level history course.
  6. This group was made for local homeschoolers to trade books and find bargains on teaching materials. The lady who had first responded finally got back in touch with me, (there were 3 others waiting). After the 'deal' was arranged, she told me that she teaches at a local ps. This made me sad. I guess I wanted them to go to some sweet little homeschooling family. Sigh. :crying:
  7. Our choir practices 1 hour on Wednesday evening before services. On Sunday morning we simply run through the chosen song once, between Sunday school and service. I would personally be sad to have to spend that much time practicing! Kinda takes all the fun out of it when it becomes a chore...
  8. Praying in faith that ALL things are possible!
  9. I'm glad I saw this! I was an absolute screaming banshee yesterday and I don't remember there being any reason. I ordered a small bottle and am praying for a miracle! :)
  10. I didn't know there was a Worldview Supplement! :) We used the original Teaching the Classics at the beginning of last year (wonderful) and we were also using Starting Points (really wonderful). We went slowly, and got half finished (we're doing the remaining half this year). So keeping in mind the pace we went at, we spent an hour or more each morning doing SP. I had my own book and did the questions, too. Much of the beginnings of SP are Bible-related, so there is a lot of doctrinal teaching and philosophy before the literature 'kicks in'. You have to know what you believe in order to have discernment when reading literature. So imo there wouldn't be a lot of overlap. Mr. Quine does teach a sequential method of Socratic questions to judge books with which may be different from the other supplement. I would think that doing both would have been quite time consuming for our family, since I was reading everything aloud so I could be more engaged in the discussions.I might be tempted to do these over 2 years as they would reinforce each other. So, my rambling is as clear as mud. ;)
  11. Thank you! Today has been fruitful for my planning, but I have yet another question. Say I located some great biology videos that I want to use periodically this upcoming year. Even though I can bookmark that website, where can I put reminders to look at the website at the appropriate time during the year?
  12. More great helps, ladies! Thanks so much. I'm still learning spreadsheets, and I will go do some email organizing. I have a pinterest board that gets added to often but I never seem to return to it lol. Off to learn more. I feel more organized already! Keep It Simple, Sweetie is my new mantra for the year...because my old head will explode if I don't! Merry...I'll be right over to steal your teacher binder!!
  13. We wait until the day after Labor Day...it's a tradition! :hurray: And it takes me that long to get my act together lol.
  14. Oh my! Wonderful helps! It's funny...just making this *public confession* made me jump up and put my makeup on :D , and then I updated both dd's transcript records. I appreciate the motivation, ladies! Ellie- I just ordered that book. Now off to investigate some school planning. Dinner plans will have to wait lol.
  15. I want a Mac. Until then...I would love to attempt the Excel idea. Thank you both for the encouragements.
  16. Hello. I've had it. Really, if you knew all the $$ I have blown on pretty teacher notebooks (never enough room), expensive homeschool planners (too much annoying detail), huge desk calendars (desk too small) and decorative wall calendars (room for home stuff but not school stuff), binders with neon dividers (how to categorize?), clipboard and paper (too sloppy)...I am so embarrassed that (after ALL these years) I have never found a system that I can live with. I am struggling now because my memory isn't what it used to be. Now I find myself scratching my head with thoughts like "Where did I store that email with the wonderful high school course plan on it?"..."I know I'm going to forget to teach this or that concept."..."If only I had written a meal plan for the week before I went shopping!"..."Where is my dd's 9th grade course of study so that I can start her transcripts?". I am a mess inside, and since my family apparently thinks I am a whiz at absolutely everything :crying: , I feel rather humiliated to be asking for help. I marvel at other's systems for organization because I think they would work for me if I would stick with them. But I tweak and tweak and usually set it aside for a 'better' planning method. Our school begins just after Labor Day and I haven't done any school planning yet! My house is being de-cluttered and slowly improved with room projects and that isn't nearly finished. Books are *everywhere*, even the basement. My home looks relatively nice but I know it's really organized chaos. Help. Please. A system/method/simple but pretty planner...anything. I'm doing FlyLady lite for house chores because I love lists and tidy plans, but they get lost lol, and beyond that, my perfectionism stops me from following through with my lesson/meal/house planning because it's never good enough to keep. :nopity: I need simple, achievable, and awesome!
  17. My name is Ginger, and I teach in bare feet. :leaving: :smilielol5:
  18. Thank you. The upstairs tub is large, heavy cast iron, so I want to save it if possible. But the rust stains are terrible...I've heard of bubbling in the finish so that may be worse than the rust! Hiring a professional would cost almost as much as replacing the tub, so I think I'm going to try doing it myself. I'll stock up on chocolate beforehand. ;)
  19. I am wondering how things went, and if it was durable. Thanks!
  20. How exciting...I never thought that FlyLady could be considered controversial! :D
  21. This is the part I thought was most interesting: "...Many of these basic skills that have been taught to kids for generations, like memorizing multiplication tables and grammar rules, don’t just teach them math and enable them to communicate clearly: they train their minds to think. We’re already seeing studies that show kids’ brains are being rewired by their reliance on computers, with lower ability to recall facts..." You know...Well-Trained Mind and all. :)
  22. I saw this today, and while clearly it's aimed at helping the classroom teacher, there are some good suggestions and organizing sheets that can be adapted for the homeschool teacher. Here is the link (routines and customizable worksheets start around page 30). http://www.flylady.net/i/pdf/teacher_coj.pdf?utm_source=FlyLady+Lite+August+8%2C+2013&utm_campaign=FlyLady+Lite&utm_medium=email
