Help with 2nd grade LA: should I make this switch??
marylandhsmom replied to marylandhsmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you ladies! This has been all so helpful!! :grouphug: Ellie -- I feel dumb asking this -- but how is Spalding a complete LA program? I have the 4th edition of WRTR.... Alisoncooks -- I so appreciate your taking the time to write your thoughts THREE times! ;-) Like yours, I know my DDs would love the "fun" factor of the workbooks. What concerns me is the weak spelling, and possibly writing?? Hmmm. If I'd have to supplement, then, I wonder if I should even be switching this up at all. The goal would be "all-in-one". As streamlined as possible, if that even is possible, for LA. :-) Anyone with anymore thoughts? Other options? -
I had great plans for my DD7 (2nd): MFW history, CLE math, WRTR spelling, Easy Grammar, WWE 1/2 with some of my own copywork thrown in. Pentime 2. ETC 5. Pathway readers, history/sci read alouds. It's all going ok, but we are in the middle of a move and now I also have a Kindergartener (doing bits and pieces of ETC, pentime, misc worksheets, etc) and super active 18 month old in the mix -- and I'm thinking of just switching it all over to CLE math and LA for both kids. No more juggling books, pulling out this one, putting away that one - just sit and do the light units and be done with math and LA. (MFW history is not a problem. Sci is not a problem). Is this wise/not wise? What do you think? Has anyone used CLE for both math and LA? This would be CLE math 2 and LA 2, and Learn to Read 1 and Math 1. Should I give up WWE? WRTR? Or leave it be? Thanks so much in advance!

We're planning on using everything you've mentioned! I don't think it's too much, but it also depends on your child. Good luck! :)

Help! Need ideas for "creative/crafty" curric (DD7)

Love these suggestions, Chelli - thank you! When did you use Sentence Family? Is 2nd too young? And what did you have to edit on the fly, for Sassafras? I'm not familiar with this program. Thank you!! -

Betsy - haha, yeah we're finishing up MFW 1st, and the second edition doesn't have as many hands-on activities as in the past, so I've heard. I'm not exactly sure what she wants but she gets jealous when she sees her sister doing CLE Kindy II workbook pages. If she were to do those same pages, she'd also think they were "boring", just like you said! Haha. Anyways...I'll try and figure something out. We're using Adventures in US History next yr, so I think there will be more hands-on fun stuff involved... that should help! Thanks, all! -

True, but I thought it would be really nice to be able to kill 2 birds with one stone, if anyone knew of creative trype curric... :) -

Anyone use Lightening Lit for 1st or 2nd grade?
marylandhsmom replied to marylandhsmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Awesome ladies, thank you so much for responding. It's brought clarity, and I think I won't be using this program for end of 1st/2nd... :) -

Just wondering about this program and what it includes! If anyone could share about their experience with it, I'd be grateful! Also, what else did you use to round out your LA. TIA! -
Never mind, found the samples!

Trying to find samples on line with little luck... Aurelia, might you have a sample link?

Peaceful Isle -- I just peeked at the 1st grade, and it looks pretty good. Did you need the TM for it, or could you just use the student book? Thanks!

Anyone use or have used CLE LA and math?
marylandhsmom replied to abooke1's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Another vote for CLE Math. I'm finding the spiral and gently incremental teaching is exactly what my R brained DD needs. Math Mammoth left her in tears. -

I know a few titles have been mentioned in the past, but I don't remember what they are. I'm looking for a good resource/book to help *me* become a better math teacher. K-6. A book that is clear and written for lay folks. Thanks so much in advance! -
SIngapore Math Struggles 1st Grade
marylandhsmom replied to heritagelearningacademy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Well, let me be the black sheep and say, CLE math is GREAT!!! It's spiral, solid, affordable. It's not as conceptual, but it gets the job done, and painlessly, I might add. The Education Unboxed videos are worth every minutes of your time, along with the C-rods, I might add. -
We're doing MFW 1st now with my 6.5 yr old DD. The phonics portion moves quickly with not much built in review in terms of worksheet after worksheet, so it's up to you, the teacher, to slow down or keep going depending on how your DC is progressing. It DOES cover pretty much everything a child needs to know in order to read fluently but it does not drill the concepts page after page. So I had to take frequent breaks from the phonics portion and reinforce with Explode the Code or other phonics practice/games, etc. And I'd find that after a few weeks had passed, the new phonogram or concept just learned had time to "settle" in her head, and we were able to get back to the student workbook. The neat part about the program is that the student reader book is an easy to read Bible. So my DD got super excited to be able to "read" the Bible by herself. I've been happy with the phonics. The pages are not cluttered and that's important for my right-brained, visual daughter. Good luck!

Yup, you need the TM!

I just ordered this today for my DD who is also a young Ker! I bought the TM b/c some of the samples had a few sections with no instructions and it wasn't necessarily intuitive as to what was being asked. But who knows, I guess you could wing it! :)
