  1. I know it isn't rated the highest, but my brother in law is a surfer, and they all swear by Banana Boat KIDS (no other type). It has worked well for us (redheads) and definitely doesn't come off until you use soap. Like someone else said, though - if you burn in 15 minutes normally, it is only going to give you the Protection extrapolated from that. This website explains it: http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/sunscreens-explained A
  2. As someone who was a "talker" as a child... Two things are going on: one, you have thoughts bombarding your senses to such a degree you feel that you must get them out or your head is going to explode and two (no one is going to like this one)... You feel as if no one is listening to anything you are saying. You feel insignificant. Yes, even at 6. If you want to modulate a "talker", set aside some time, every day, for just you and them, in a place that has nothing to do with YOU. Don't bring a book, don't play with your cell phone, don't knit - nothing. Maybe sit at a park and ask them to tell you all about what they see. Lay on the grass and point out shapes in the clouds together. Believe it or not, when the child feels they are really being listened to, the never ending chatter at YOU will cease. They'll probably still sit around making up stories about their toys, etc. - but that's just because their brain is moving at Mach 10. Go to Hoagie's gifted page and look around for puzzles and such. My mom came up with some interesting complex manipulatives that really required concentration. They helped a lot. A
  3. And yet, the sheer number of "but it is so much cheaper to buy it at Wal-Mart" (with "it" comprising various topics) permeates this board. One can argue "informed consumer" all one wants, but 1. I don't think anyone would accuse the members of this board of being uninformed (or incapable of becoming informed should they so wish), so 2. I think most people are quite comfortable in their "it's cheaper, it's ok" ignorance. Righteous indignation isn't going to change a society that is h3llbent on cheaper cheaper cheaper. A
  4. Have you checked to determine it is you and not your husband that is having the issue? A
  5. Unless you wander through and delete everything you've ever posted, commented on or "liked" prior to "deleting" your account, it is actually still there. I go through and delete previous stuff once a month. A
  6. Sorry to hear this. I think the reason I lucked out was because my building is (strangely) nestled in amongst similar old houses that have been taken over by businesses (doctors, architects, etc.), so I'm not constantly running into "neighbors" - rather, a random assortment of people who don't necessarily want to talk! (Woo hoo!) a
  7. Do you have the (well this is what the locals here call them) "crazy chicken people" or the "crazy garden people" plots there? You know, the 2 acres where a huge number of people each have a tiny plot with an overly stylized wooden garden shed (that they somehow almost live in in good weather) and a meticulously tended garden? There are some more "down-scale" versions here as well... they would be a good garden substitute. Also, you never know what you might find lurking in your canton - I found a building from 1885 that had a huge tiered garden behind it - but only for my flat. The other flats had their own bennies (a garage, a big balcony, etc.). You can't see it from the front - I lucked upon it. It was in disrepair, so the landlord wasn't advertising it, but I've been working on it. Things will work out. a
  8. You can't go 'home' again. Despite what you may think from afar, everyone back there has moved along according to 'American' norms. And despite what you may think about yourself from where you sit, you have not 'kept up' with those same cultural norms. Fish out of water and all that. Yeah, it's great to "see the family" on visits. But until we decide to plop ourselves down on a piece of land and re-establish ourselves (and our identities) as full-on Americans-who-no-longer-move-about... nope - not going there. Even kid isn't going to an American uni. He can't stand the atmosphere. a
  9. Double check that the "cash rate" isn't obscenely higher than the insurance rate. It doesn't make sense, but often, the rate offered to cash customers is double, triple, quadruple that offered to insured patients. Lesson? Everything is negotiable. A
  10. I'm sorry I saw this too late, but I wanted to tell you to hang on to your hat in regards to the German variant. DH, who NEVER gets ill, got it last month and couldn't shake it for at least 3 weeks. I'm guessing your doc will keep you on your regular Cortef and give you a booster shot. (I'm not on it - I have secondary Addison's - cure worse than the disease and all that :p ) A
  11. Yep. 'Organic' is a BS term. All organic truly means is 'carbon based' - and don't think for a second that companies rely on that fact. A
  12. I have a fake Facebook account and a fake twitter account. I signed in under the fake twitter account. No one sees anything, nor knows who I am on pinterest. Well, except Skynet - they know everything, and there is no escaping that LOL! A
  13. The Beck depression inventory is considered the "accurate" one. Further, GPs aren't qualified to treat depression - you really need to see a psychiatrist to determine if what is going on would best be dealt with within the realm of therapy, Meds, or a combination of the two. A
  14. They don't need to be - it is an established fact that the US military has been the primary military support for the EU counties since WWII. Not a single one can match the US on technology - they don't even try - their budgets are apportioned to their welfare states, not their national defense. If the US were to pull out of the EU tomorrow, all h3ll would break loose worldwide. The US isn't the 'aggressor' everyone would like to present them as; they are the glue holding most of the world together. A
  15. When kid first started attending the local piping band, the instructor decided to yell at him. His crime? Playing above his station... erm level. She was the gargoyle at the gate - everyone who was going to join the band had to go through her "group" to get the basics of "being in a band" (how to march, how to play in a group vs solo, etc.). Well... she wasn't his private tutor, someone else was. And he was a MUCH better player than anyone in her group (all of whom she taught), even if he didn't know "band" stuff yet. You know what? Don't yell at my kid unless I've given you permission to. (his aunts can henpeck him all they want, LOL) I don't care how old he is. I don't view it as a learning experience: I view it as the adult NOT being in control of themselves and therefore being a threat to my child. We won't even go into the public humiliation angle. That was 6 years ago, and I *still* can't get kid to try playing in a band - it was THAT horrifying to him. I think people really underestimate the damage a tutor can have on a student when they humiliate them in front of everyone - not because they have done something badly or aren't following the rules - but because the tutor is an @ss. a

    UCAS?

She said it should be fine, but that I should double check with the American counselor (she was the African and Eastern counselor). The main thing, apparently, was proving one's level. We're not too concerned with how it is ranked, as apparently it does quite well: a

    UCAS?

Ah. Currently, he is looking at the MA in Central and East European Studies at Glasgow. They also have a dual honors w/ German that is attractive to him. When I called the International Students office, they told me he would need an SAT and two SAT2s, though it didn't matter which ones for this major (huh? that sounds odd...). She commented that it was because he would have already completed 12 years of schooling and a glide year. Looking at the available SAT2s, it appears that World History would obviously be a good one, as would German, but it would be more convenient to get a Goethe certificate for the German than do an SAT2 for it (cheaper, too - good Lord are SAT international rates high!). So I'm not sure what else he should do - Literature is NOT his strong point... a

    UCAS?

Has anyone here who has HSd through high school gone on to complete the UCAS for UK universities? (for their kid I mean) I'm just wondering what I'm going to be in for, paperwork wise (eg: just a transcript or a transcript plus course descriptions etc.) Thx Asta
  20. Syncope is not a seizure. It can look like one to someone from the outside, though. a
  21. Talk to your benefits manager. For life and death medications (diabetes) there are exceptions in ExpressScripts. I was allowed "out" because I can't be without my anticonvulsants even for a day, so if something in their system gets screwed up, or it gets lost in the mail, I would be screwed. Check on it. A
  22. 1. When does your contract run out? 2. She can't make you do anything. 3. One of the best things I ever did was buy a "how to sell your house yourself" book and follow all of the recommendations (put half of your belongings in storage, you only recoup fixing the bath and kitchen, do "staging", etc.) 4. The best kept secret, IMO for new flooring when having to sell an older house: the polypropylene berber carpet on the HUGE rolls on the back wall of home depot. Install that crap over the "premium" carpet pad and everyone thinks you spent a bundle on new flooring. The "gush" factor psychs them into thinking it is expensive... 5. The .99 tile of the month at Home Depot is your friend. It rotates in color, but is always a neutral. Works great for bathroom floors. There is even a trend to put larger tiles on walls now. 6. Check builder's supply places for "returns" on shower enclosures. One of my girlfriends got a $2500 enclosure for a couple hundred bucks because it was black. If you're already starting from scratch, you may be able to deal with beige instead of white, etc. a
  23. One more reason I would never join HSLDA. It drives me batty when people assume that other cultures view the world the same way they do. Germany (and any other country) is NOT the United States of America. It has a different governmental system, a different social system, etc. Americans may argue against the German (and other nations') method of testing children and separating them into vocational, apprentice and university bound tracks, but it works for their societies. As an aside, there have been many articles in the US press lately bemoaning the lack of formal apprenticeship programs in the US, as the "everyone should go to college" push has not worked out so well for many people (e.g. not everyone who has showed up was "up" for it). a
