  1. I did one last year, and my Dad's Friesian roots were shown as Scandinavian, British, and Irish, and not as Western European. From my Mum's side I got a near 50% Finnish result.
  2. I bought my husband a new coat. He hasn't bought himself any really nice clothing since we got married; just the basics, but not something fancy.
  3. I'm half Finnish! My Mom was Finnish and she talked a lot about this story, she even had some jewelry inspired by the it. I should really read this book as well.
  4. So sorry for your loss, PrairieSong! :grouphug:
  5. This week I haven't been reading much except Different, by Sarah and Nathan Clarkson. Thumbs up! It was exactly what I was hoping for. Last week I finished The Night Circus, and disliked it a lot. The first few chapters were okay, but the plot didn't seem to move on. I find myself not wanting to read much this week, nor have I been much on social media.I decided to start Fahrenheit 451, as that is a book I have been looking forawrd to since I wrote it on my TBR-list for 2017. Maybe that book will get me out of my reading slump. I will try to catch up on the thread, but ...feeling kind of bleegh. :001_unsure: Oh February!
  6. I joined WeightWatchers at the beginning of this year, and already lost 19 pounds. It will take probably the whole year for me to reach my goal weight, becasue I was shedding pounds quickly at the beginning, compared to now. My goal is to exercise everyday on my home trainer, and HIIT videos from YouTube. So far I've been able to keep up with it, but I skipped a few days, when we went hiking. I didn't feel I need more exercise on those days. A major change for me is that a couple of days ago I decided to go Vegan, which will increase my intake of fruits and veg, and decrease my fat intake. I feel so much better already!
  7. I just started Travelers, as I saw it mentioned on here! I stayed up too late...thanks :)
  8. I just recently watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead 1 and 2, and Forks over Knives. Two weeks ago I finished watching Van Helsing, and can't wait for a new season to be released. I find it very similar to Walking Dead.
  9. This week I finished Memoirs of a Geisha. I can't believe I had this book on my shelves for three years and not read it until now. I haven't started another light read, as I'm waiting for my Amazon order to arrive. We hardly ever (never) use the library, because I always end up with late fees. To be honest, I think I'm saving money this way. I love Neil Gaiman's Top 10. I have Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell waiting on my tbr, it's so long that I haven't dared opening it yet, but I love his description of the book: Books read so far: - The Game of Thrones ***** - Fanstastic Beast and Where to Find Them *** - In Search of England *** - Memoirs of a Geisha ***** Books I'm currently reading: - Sense and Sensibility - Austen (a group read, and we're taking half a year) - Romantic Poets (collection of poems by Byron, Keats and more) - Mere Christianity - Lewis - The Brothers Karamazov - Dostoevsky (group read, will take the whole year) - Shakespeare's Sonnets - Fierce Wars and Faithful Loves - Spenser - The Story of the Ancient World - SWB (read Ch 9&10) - The Sea Around Us - Carson - Heartfelt Discipline - Clarkson - The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - Manson
  10. I love long books! I added a few to my tbr-list, and placed an order for Benjamin Strange & Mr. Norrell Thank you!  I'm two weeks into this challenge and have already ordered three books because of you all: Norwegian Wood, The Night Circus, and this one. It does bug me enough to put the book down. I remember reading Lila, by Marilynne Robinson and I think (not sure, maybe it was something else) she does the same. I did finish it, but decided there and then not to pick up another book by her.
  11. They're very, very simple. For today's lesson we needed a candle and a CD. The demonstration took 1 minute.
  12. We used to finish our day at 12-ish, but my eldest is nine now, and with two other kids that need lessons, there is no way we can finish before 12. We do take long breaks when needed, so that makes the day longer as well. I first bring my younger crowd to bed and read to them. When they're asleep I can quietly read to my eldest kids. Introvert here as well,...it's tough!
  13. I read Me Before You last year, and did kind of enjoy it, but my IRL bookish friend bought me After You. Now I will have to read another JoJo Meyes book. I finished In Search of England, by H.V. Morton, and surprisingly did not enjoy it. This had been on my shelves for a long time, and I had high hopes. That makes two of the three books I read this year, books I didn't really enjoy.
  14. That's a great story! Funny how he asked you, if you wanted it signed. So the books get darker still? I found Book I dark enough already. I have Book II and III on my bookshelves, and will at least give them a try, but I'm not sure if I want to read the whole series. Yes, such a bummer that person died! He was my favourite as well. I love seeing your pictures as well! Nice to see you here. :seeya:
  15. I'm in awe of how much you all are able to read in a week. My list will keep me busy for ages. Uh-oh :scared: Well, in that case I shall continue reading...forevermore. Game of Thrones is pretty light, right? I'm just catching up on an education I failed to receive. ;)
  16. Hello! I'm a long-time lurker, and last week I was thinking of joining you for the new year, but for some reason didn't take the plunge. Is it okay if I still join? I've read two book so far: - The Game of Thrones, which surprised me! Then I tried watching the first episode, but all I could do was cringe. :glare: I had high hopes there. - Fanstastic Beast and Where to Find Them. Last year I read through the whole HP series again, and I was looking forward to reading this prequel, but it wasn't for me. Books I'm currently reading: - Sense and Sensibility - Austen - Romantic Poets (collection of poems by Byron, Keats and more) - Mere Christianity - Lewis - The Brothers Karamazov - Dostoevsky - Shakespeare's Sonnets - Fierce Wars and Faithful Loves - Spenser - The Story of the Ancient World - SWB - In Search of England - Morton - The Sea Around Us - Carson - Heartfelt Discipline - Clarkson - The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - Manson - Memoirs of a Geisha - Golden :w00t: :willy_nilly: I've heard a lot of good things about The Night Circus lately, so that will move up on my tbr-pile. There's not really a pile, but more like a list, or shall I say bookwork. I see a few familiar faces/names here, mostly from Instagram. Hello to you!
  17. :iagree:just memorizing it is one thing, understanding it another.
  18. :iagree: I was planning on using boxed curriculum, but there is no way I can afford a couple of grades each year ;) If you do want something that comes in a box, have you looked at Sonlight? Not that it's cheap:tongue_smilie:but they do have Horizons as a math option.
  19. :iagree: It made me realize that we're heading in this direction too. I'm researching Middle Grade math options, whilst my little one isn't even 'supposed' to be in Grade 1.
  20. My mom took me out shopping to get a nice little bag to put my pads in(which I could take along in my schoolbag). She made a nice little day out, out of it, without mentioning 'the subject' too often ;).
  21. I'm adding History, Science, Bible and Geography. We've only been doing the 3 R's, but I think the kiddo's are old enough now to add some more subjects.
  22. $170 in total for everything: gifts, stocking stuffers, extra food, cookies etc. :001_huh: You guys spend a lot!
  23. How did you test his reading level? I'm aksing because according to the test Sonlight has on their website my son reads at a Grade 6 level but for him Grade 2 CLE Readers are quite challenging. Have you tried any of their other readers? We've finished LTR as well, but used Word Mastery after that, which gave a whole lot more challenge than LTR. We're now using CLE Readers for the challenging words and Pathway Readers to increase the speed of his reading.
  24. I think I'll go with the first two. I have lower elementary kids and an Aspie who might not understand Ben and Me.
