  1. If so, how did you make this work? Does each one need their own set of cards? I am trying to figure out how to make this work.
  2. This has been by far the hardest year to make something work. Not sure why that is but it is. At this point I think I am just going to keep my 1st and 3rd together and my 5th and 7th together and not worry about staying on the same topic.
  3. Ok, this year I am really learning what works and what does not for our family. This year I have 5 kids in school and it has been a big adjustment for me. The things I had planned and hoped to work just haven't. I have tried combining and not combining and neither have worked. Is there anything out there for science and history that has different levels but similar topics up through 8th grade? For example....I want to put my 1st and 3rd together and my 5th and 7th together but I would like them to be on the same topic. I love using living books. I need things very planned out. My kids are very artsy and love crafts. I would be so happy to find something like this for both history and science. I was looking at Beautiful Feet Early American both primary and intermediate. This looks perfect! However, not sure what I would use next year that would be similar to this for another year of history. I have looked at SCM but I am not crazy about doing 6 year cycles. Every other year for the next 3 years we will be adding another child into the mix too.
  4. I feel like we have tried so many history programs. I really want something multilevel that I can use with all of my kids that they each can learn from. I don't want it over someone's head or too below someone else. I love using living books as well. We have been trying to make HOD work but I really love having everyone together for certain subjects. Any ideas? My kids are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13 and 15. However, the 15yr old is on her own for history. Grade level wise we are 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th. Obviously the little kids don't matter for history at this point but do factor into my day. :) We have tried My Father's World, Heart of Dakota, Sonlight, just looked at but not tried TOG, Biblioplan and SCM. I like the idea of using SOTW and MOH together. I am not sure how to add in living books for these. Honestly, I want to be able to use my own resources but then I get overwhelmed when I am trying to pull it all together. Not sure if that even makes sense or not. In the end I am sure I am making this much harder than it is. I will say we are using Apologia for science and LOVE that. Wish I could find a similar format for history to that.
  5. We have used Growing with Grammar for a few years but ended up with very little retention. I have tried a few other things but nothing that has really clicked for us. We have used FLL, R&S. I really love how easy it is to teach GWG but need something that sticks. Any ideas? Maybe Easy Grammar? I am mainly looking for my 3rd and 5th grader. Maybe my 7th grader as well. Thanks for your help :)
  6. I have 8 kids. My 5th, 7th and 9th are in various levels of HOD. I am looking for somethimg easy to implement for my 1st and 3rd grader. I also have a 1yr old, 3yr old and 4yr old. :) I have phonics and math covereand reading. I am looking for ideas in bible history geography These are subjects I would like to keep us together for. I am thinking maybe just a children's bible and a verse to memorize each week would work. Maybe Little Passports for geography? Is it worth the money? We are also using Science in the Beginning. I am just trying to simplify so we can put our home back in homeschool. :) Hope that makes sense.
  7. Our family has been using MUS for several years. I have finally come to realize that my kids need a spiral approach vs mastery. Now I have kids getting into higher levels of math. I really want to be able to understand myself what I am teaching them. Any ideas what curriculum really lays the concepts out clearly for a non mathy mom? Thank you for any help. :)
  8. I think I am leaning toward AAR. We love AAS so I bet it will work. :)
  9. We have been using IEW's PAL but I think we need something else. I am looking for something where we can spend 15 minutes a day or so. I really like AAS for my older kids and am wondering if AAR would be a good fit? Or maybe something entirely different? Just looking for something that will get done.
  10. I am finding that I need to supplement for my kids with MUS. Any ideas what would be a nice compliment to MUS? I have kids in various levels of MUS. Thank you for any help :)
  11. I think I am going to go with CLE. We had used that a few years ago and I know it works. Thank everyone for your help. :)
  12. I would love some help trying to figure all of this out. Currently our 9th grader is using MFW AHL, MUS Alg1 and Apologia Bio + her electives. Our 7th grader is using MFW ECC, MUS Pre A, Apologia General We have switched the rest of our kids (preK, 1st,3rd and 5th) over to HOD. HOD feels like a much better fit for our family. I love the way the guide is laid out and it just clicks with me. We are also switching over to CLE math and la for the 1st-5th. Here are my questions. Can I use CLE for math and la through high school or should I switch to something else? Both my 7th and 9th grader plan to switch to HOD next year. I am thinking it might make the most sense to just switch now. I was thinking of trying to combine them but maybe having them in their own guide might work better. Any ideas?
  13. Our 9th grader has been using MUS for the last few years. Neither or I are very math minded. She tried and did not like TT. She likes old fashioned books and paper. :) Can you suggest a math plan for us? She will need 4 credits/
  14. So do they just copy the whole problem over to a notebook and work it out from there?
  15. Can anyone explain the major differences between CLE and R&S? I know one is mastery and one is spiral. You can't write in the R&S book correct? I think that might be an advantage of CLE.
  16. We are using and loving R&S for English so maybe I should check it out for math. I am really stumped on what to do for him.
  17. My 5th grader has been using MUS for the last few years. I thought mastery would fit his learning style but I am wrong. He is forgetting very basic concepts. I think his confidence is not where it could be with math right now. Despite the struggles we are having I think he is a pretty mathy kid. I would like to find a program that I can go back a few levels and refresh his memory on things he has learned. He is easily distracted and struggles to focus. Knowing all of this any thought on what I should try?
  18. We have used for most of our hsing. My 5th grader (Epsilon) is really struggling. It's like the concepts aren't sticking with him. I acutally think math is one of his strengths. However, I am beginning to think MUS is not the right fit for him. He really struggles with staying focused. We are starting our 1st grader in Singapore and I am tempted to try that with him. Singapore just seems intimidating to me. I have read that you need to supplement. I just don't want to miss teaching him something. We tried CLE which I love but the pages were too cluttered and drove him crazy. I think he will really flourish once I can get the right math for him.
  19. I have always thought combining was ideal. For our family that is just not proving to be the case. I know we are brand new to HOD but it is love at first sight and grows ever single day. It's like it was custom made for us. So it makes everything worth it in the end. I think I will go with LHFHG.
  20. Some days brave but most days just totally crazy. lol
  21. I am going to be running 3 HOD guides so I wonder if keeping it light might be a better idea? I am also doing LHTH with our 2 and 4 yr olds, Bigger with my 3rd and 5th. Then I have 2 older kids (7th and 9th) in MFW guides. It's a lot I know. But after miserably failing at combining I am ready for the challenge......I think.
  22. That is what I needed to know. That was a huge help. :) Thank you :)
  23. I guess he could go either way. I am leaning towards LiHFHG. However, I am new to HOD and it says I need to use the schedule in the appendix for some of the material for 1st grade. Not sure if that would drive me crazy having to flip back and forth.
